For those working on #climateChange#disaster and #migration in East Africa here is an interesting research talk by Nicodemus Nyandiko from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology on Incorporating Climate Mobility into #DRR frameworks in the IGAD Region (Horn of Africa)

"Preliminary data suggest Oxnard may have experienced one of the heaviest downpours ever observed in the area, with rainfall rates of 3 inches per hour sustained for more than an hour.... Fire officials in Ventura County reported that 911 dispatchers had received more than 275 calls for help over a five-hour period as floodwaters rose in the coastal communities of Port Hueneme and Oxnard." #PortHueneme#Oxnard#flooding#disaster#VenturaCounty#rain#CAwx
It really doesn’t matter how many times, how often, or how badly #Vermont#floods, people have proven they aren’t going to change their lives. #Vermonters are wedded to irrationally nostalgic sentimentalism, fossil fuels, and pastoral delusions. Only once these fantasies are completely destroyed by Mother Nature and they are forced out of their homes by #climate#disaster will the people of #VT begin to change, at which point, it will of course be far too late. We must make land common property.

“I’m almost at a loss of finding words to adequately describe the #corruption and the evil at COP28,” says Dr. Peter Kalmus.
..caused by the fossil fuel industry, and that’s not unintentional. The #fossil fuel industry has been spreading disinformation for about half a century, and even colluding, very systematically, by hiring some of the best #lobbyists and PR people in the world,
Today in Labor History December 6, 1917: A munitions explosion near Halifax, Nova Scotia, killed over 1,900 people, in the largest and deadliest such disaster to date. 9,000 were injured. The SS Mont-Blanc, a French cargo ship laden with explosives, collided with the Norwegian ship SS Imo. A fire set off the explosives. Nearly all structures within a half-mile radius, including the town of Richmond, were obliterated. The pressure wave snapped trees, bent iron rails and demolished buildings. It created a local tsunami that destroyed the Mont Blanc and grounded the Imo. The tsunami wiped out the Mi’kmaq First Nation community across the harbor.
This photograph was purportedly taken 15-20 seconds after the explosion. The National Library and Archives Canada description estimates the distance from the explosion as approximately 2 kilometres (one and a quarter miles) and that it was taken at Bedford Basin, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, looking south down Halifax Harbour. Photographer: unknown. The height of the blast at its peak was measured at approximately 12,000 feet.
Today in Labor History December 3, 1984: A methyl isocyanate leak from a Union Carbide plant in Bhopal, India, killed over 3,800 people and injured up to 600,000 more. Up to 16,000 people died, in total, over the years following the disaster. The Government of Madhya Pradesh has paid compensation to family members of 3,787 of the victims killed. Numerous local activist groups emerged to support the victims of the disaster, like Rashida Bee and Champa Devi Shukla, who won the Goldman Prize in 2004. Many of the activists were subjected to violent repression by the police and government. Larger international groups, like Greenpeace and Pesticide Action Network also got involved. The disaster has played a role in numerous works of fiction, including Arundhati Roy’s “The Ministry of Utmost Happiness” (2017) and Indra Sinha’s “Animal’s People” (2007). It has also been referenced in music by the Revolting Cocks “Union Carbide” and the Dog Faced Hermans ”Bhopal.”
"State seismologists warned of life-threatening tsunamis after a massive magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the waters off Hinatuan town in Surigao Del Sur on Saturday night.
The tremors were felt northeast of Hinatuan at 10:37 p.m. Its depth of focus was just eight kilometers deep, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
Immediately after the quake, Phivolcs warned tsunamis which are expected to hit the affected areas between 10:37 p.m. and 11:59 p.m. on Saturday. " #phillippines#tsunami#earthquake#disaster

Finality of Dusk is set in the year 2045. It’s a film about the few humans remaining on earth following an environmental disaster. Because of the poisonous air, those still alive must wear filtration masks in order to survive.
Katarina Ziervogel, a member of Sagkeeng First Nation in Manitoba, helped create the film. She is a deaf woman and brought a unique perspective to the main characters' interactions.
It was a night to remember; but no one seems to remember it! I write about the sinking of the ocean liner Empress of Ireland in 1914, Canada's own Titanic-scale disaster that was almost instantly lost in the mists of time.
What IT careers are related to ecological conservation, humanitarian aid, and disaster relief?
