Whether it is weathering an ice storm, heat dome, wind event, or urban wildland fire, preparedness is essential. No one is coming to save us except us. Please do check out this amazing series of check lists provided by our SW Hills NETs.
From the email:
"Doug Ford is once again trying to gut hard-won environmental protections.
The “Get it Done” Act, introduced Tuesday, is a giant omnibus bill so big Ford’s hoping we wouldn't notice its most offensive policy changes – including allowing the government to expropriate land for major infrastructure projects, without a completed environmental assessment.
The goal? To force through controversial projects such as Highway 413, a $10 billion environmental disaster that would run through pristine Greenbelt land, destroy farmland, and harm endangered wildlife.
Doug Ford is testing the waters to see if you notice these major changes. You could help send a clear message that the people of Ontario see right through this gross overreach."

Hi Mastodon, do you have ideas about what people in #Lethbridge, #Alberta, should do this summer, when we expect some degree of #water scarcity, to manage extreme #heat emergencies, that is, #heatwaves and #heatdomes?
New at my Patreon... At Melbourne Museum I stepped aboard RMS Titanic; or a simulation of it, which displayed retrieved items among re-creations of its grand interior:
"The Damage Collection Survey link below will assist the County of Los Angeles in collecting damage information and estimated costs that are a direct result of the February 2024 Winter Storm. This information will be used to determine if the estimated dollar amount of disaster damages within Los Angeles County meets the established thresholds to qualify for various disaster assistance programs."
Cleanup is underway after wildfires in the Valparaíso region of Chile. 112 confirmed dead.
In seaside resort and logistics town Viña del Mar, more than 12,000 homes were destroyed by wildfires in a day. According to the 2017 census, there were just 67,000 homes in the city. Almost a fifth leveled.
In the nearby agricultural town Quilpue, 2,700 homes were destroyed. Total before the fire: 11,000. 1 in 4 homes gone
If you could help a family friend rebuild her life after losing everything in this fire, I would appreciate it. I assure you that this fundraiser is legit.

"Human-intensified, natural disasters do not hit everyone equally.
Communities of color, disabled and sick, working class and poor, queer and trans, immigrants, older individuals, and in geopolitically disinvested regions are disproportionately impacted harder by disasters."
Oh, what's in this little box, a small sony trinitron perfect for some #retrogaming action perhaps?
Only a single layer of small bubble-wrap & a thin foam sheet over the front for protection seems a bit dicey, and it seems to be on it's side, but the box was intact & Japan's delivery services are pretty gentle with packages…
Uh oh, what a cracking crunching sound as I open the wrap? Damn. 🙀 Well, that's not going to be useful given the dangerous voltages present when using a crt, if it even works.
Once again we see that when a deal is too good to be true…
Today's home improvement task: cut an access hole in a ceiling, install insulation the remodeling crew missed (because I was not there that day to cross check them), close up access hole. Detected via FLIR. I had mentioned it to the project manager but they still didn't do it (should have documented it in an email). It's about $20 worth of insulation plus the hassle of cutting a temporary hatch, but getting them to fix it would be a major hassle. It just gets mentioned on the after-install report to the insurance company, ie. "how would you rate their work". 🤨 #disaster#remodeling
One goal of any good bonsai practitioner is to try and make their small pampered trees look like they “have been through some stuff” to signify age and experience.
So an 85’ fir tree fell across our garage and backyard, landing on the spot I had just moved the bulk of my trees to, to protect from the wicked weather we were expecting.
If the initial fall didn’t do the “fir”st damage…the cleanup will complete it. Many trees with absolutely all limbs stripped down their trunks. One of the trees I have been working on the longest lost one of its two primary trunks.
