For Asians, especially folks, Kishore's talking points will be familiar. But Western readers will find it confronting as it pops many ideological bubbles & it'll hit at the ego.
It is refreshing to read geo from a SEA perspective. I'm used to Western narratives, so to see my thoughts represented here is quite validating. This was written in the Trump era, so it's painful to see his warnings come to pass especially with China, Ukraine & Russia😞

Does anyone have any suggestions for good places to buy used books online? I love my library but sometimes I want to keep a book and I hate paying full price for new books. Plus there are some older books I’d like to find to purchase @bookstodon #books #reading

Doing a pinned thread of my reading for 2024. Goal is 40 books, which is for sure low, but I also believe in playing games on "easy" mode. Audiobooks count, sorry.
Feel free to mute this if not your ball of wax.

Book stuff, but in app form.

Activists rally to save Internet Archive as a lawsuit from publishers threaten to shut it down https://decrypt.co/31906/activists-rally-save-internet-archive-lawsuit-threatens

If people are smart, it's time to archive the Archive right now. In other words, fork it and turn it unto a decentralized platform. I hope someone out there is working on that.

Plus you have to think libraries need some decentralization as well as this lawsuit could kill libraries as we know them.

@bookstodon Often, lonnnnnnggg books get overlooked. (I am guilty of this myself.) So, Bibliophiles, tell us which HUGE tomes are worth the hefty page count.

A few of my rec's:

11/22/63, Stephen King
1Q84, Haruki Murakami
2666, Roberto Balaňo
Gnomon, Nick Harkaway
The Third Person, Emma Grove
Wayward, Chuck Wendig

There was a time, when I dearly loved #TerryPratchett and #DouglasAdams, and they will always have a sweet spot in my heart for the many laughs and for all the cultural heritage, they left us.

However: Whenever I now grab one of their #books, their style and language feels terribly outdated and, frankly, boring to me.

Unpopular opinion, or do you agree?

#JustFinished 1984, by George Orwell

I had never read this before. And that was a hole in my reading, given I'm in my 6th decade.

1984 is one of those books everyone should read. Yes, it's heavy-handed. No, it's not spectacular writing. Yes, we all need to be aware of giving up too much power to our government. But there are other things too.

Orwell's discussions of the proles clearly speak to not leaving them with no safety net. (Winston's youth,

#Recommendations please:

Stories...

(mainly TV series available on #AmazonPrime or #Netflix, but open to #movies & #books too)

... that are rooted in and do something interesting with #TimeTravel.

Note: Doctor Who is not, for the most part, about time travel. Time travel is merely a contrivance to allow for a breadth of stories, so Who doesn't count here (though I could probably think of some specific episodes that do something interesting with time travel if I put my mind to it).
The same is true of Quantum Leap.
I guess The Time Traveler's Wife (Niffenegger) would fit to a degree, but it's not quite as time travel focused as I'm looking for.

Essentially, if I get introduced to some decent stories I'll be happy.

Today is a Poison Ivy day...and not just any Poison Ivy day; today is Poison Ivy #12 day, which means this series, originally just a mini spun out of an 8 page short story, is now a year old. And thriving. Big things in this issue. All possible because of you. 💚 #WeAreTheGreen #comics #books

Eugen Rochko recently posted a thought:
"I think it comes down to, AI has no place in the arts. Machine-generated art has the appearance of what it is emulating, but no substance. Like cake made entirely of fondant. Or cardboard."

'Aiono' replied: "Also even if it could, like why would you automate one of the most entertaining part of being a human?"

Replace 'art' with 'writing'.

Right!

Happy writing,
Roger

As a reader, do you prefer when people give you random books as gifts, or do you prefer getting a gift card to a bookstore (so you can pick the book)? Just curious.

Unless I’m asked about a specific book, I prefer the bookstore card 📚

Parents of teens, I need a book recommendation!

This is to appease some well-meaning but overtly Christian and out-of-touch family members. Something for a 12yo who reads well above his age, along the lines of inspiration/motivation for teens to be good humans and members of society

Rather than have them pushing propaganda on my son I’d like to find a worthwhile read they will feel addresses the insufficient Christian influence in his life

  1. No podcast will be longer than 45 minutes. 2. No film will be longer than 2.5 hours. EVER. 3. No book should be longer than 500 pages unless it really is good enough to win major awards.

Awhile ago I saw a post mentioning @clarkesworld a magazine I didn't know anything about. Nothing strange about that, I'm usually not particularly clued up. It mentioned something about subscriptions via Amazon ending. I got curious and bought a digital copy, and realised how much fun short fiction can be.
Magazines need subscribers so we can get that fun fiction. So, now I am one. If you can, subscribe to a magazine and help not just them, but other readers too
