anybody know of some novels or series with themes including the good side of humanity? I really like for that, where the human heart is challenged yet prevails.

Not necessarily looking for Sci-Fi but not excluding it either. Maybe something historical or steampunky would be cool. 😅

I'm reading two different books from H.P. : "A Confession of Unfaith" and "Philosophical Essays". But I found out that several essays appears in both books, which makes my reading easier. Fewer pages left to be read soon. Love it.

At , the Australian science fiction writers con, and the main, constant lament seems to be that it's so difficult to get any traction as a new author, either through small press or self publishing. There are so many books!

imalcolm,
@imalcolm@mastodon.social avatar

@golgaloth

It's definitely a problem, and not just for new authors. One of my oldest friends has over 30 books out (disclosure: a few of which I've proofed and/or edited) and has gone from niche publishers (TSR/WOTC) to self-pub and now trying small press again. They're currently very much surviving on Patreon support and an occasional RPG book sale.

(Sidenote: Loving 'Cruel Provocations'! Will say more later - only six chapters in but it's got its hooks - or possibly threads - in me. 😉)

@imalcolm glad you're enjoying it. Word of mouth seems like the only reliable way to get sales, so do say more later.

A TALE OF LOVE AND MONSTERS is a heart-stopping, action-packed fantasy adventure, a unique romance, and a deep, wise parable about self-sacrifice and family stories. Beautifully crafted kaleidoscope of distinctively new and classic legends. A MINUS

A book I edited was written up in the local paper.

So happy to see Shannon Bohrer's book, Judicial Soup: One Man's Wrongful Conviction and What It Means for Criminal Justice Reform, getting some media attention. This is a very relatable book on a hugely important topic. When you read it, first you'll be angry. Then you'll think, "If it can happen to that guy, it can happen to anyone."

'Judicial Soup' is a good title.

The 'criminal justice' system is an assembly line human trafficking racket run by con artists and villains hiding behind the deadly force of the criminal state.

They secretly say their prayers to Wackenhut for a return on investment. More warm bodies equals more cash in, more 'justification' for their racket.

This week I'm wrapping up the audio of Let The Great World Spin by Colum McCann. This is the second audiobook in a row for me with truly raw depictions of people just scraping by and trying to make the best of their situation. Tillie's narration is heartbreaking. Next audio read needs to be something not so heavy.

Related: now I feel like I should watch "The Walk" starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt. (not a bad thing)

A Flat Place by Noreen Masud on and its link to land -

The flat landscapes metaphorically represent the erasure of and personal trauma, much like the draining of the fens removed the natural history and biodiversity.
