A few extra seconds of your time it takes to add a good image description can really improve someone's day.

"To a totally blind person like me it means a lot to have a picture in my mind of your images, especially the animal pics."

"I don't know what it is, but as a blind user it's making me emotional to be able to actually interact with content."

So, I wanted to ask, especially to our blind users:

Sometimes an image is missing alt text, so I add it, and I add the tag

Does that help people find alt text, added by somebody else, that's not actually attached to the image posted?

Or do people find that there's no alt text, and then don't look in the replies for ?

I just hope my efforts aren't wasted.

So I'm hoping other blind people can enlighten me. For real, this isn't sarcasm. I think I'm missing something with Tweesecake. Like, I use TW Blue, Enafore, and Mona just fine. Tweesecake just escapes me and I feel like I'm using it wrong or something, or there's some trick to it I just don't understand because other Blind/VI people seem to think it highly intuitive. I'd like some tips on using it. I'm using the visual interface. Maybe that's the disconnect? What are some tips you can give me? @mastoblind

Hi all. I've got an older #computer running #Windows10, and I'm thinking about putting #Linux on it since I've always wanted to try it out and think this computer might run better with Linux. I read a topic on audiogames.net about Linux #accessibility, and I saw a few recommendations for #distros to try out. To any #blind Linux users, is #NixOS a good one for a beginner, or should I try #LinuxMint or #Ubuntu? Also, what's the best way to install Linux and replace #Windows? Thanks.

@signalapp Hello dear Signal Team, I love using Signal, but could you please implement one thing to Signal for iOS: Increasing/decreasing playback speed of voice messages, this function is very useful, but I can't see it. If this function exists, it's not available and accessible for blind users using VoiceOver screen reader. Thank you. #Blind #Apple #Accessibility #Technology

Today in the world of weird accessibility issues, @hmaealdeza told me that her Grab app (the Uber/Eats equivalent in parts of Asia) has stopped letting her see the top tabs with VoiceOver. Considering those tabs are for choosing between ride, food, and mart, that's kind of a big problem.
I still had the app from when I visited there, so I tried it. Turns out mine was also updated, but I could see the tabs without any issue. So I suggested she reinstall the app ... and against all common sense, the tabs came back (the very next day🎶).
I will think of this whenever support tells me to reinstall the app, and will probably take them more seriously going forward, because sometimes it just fixes things for no apparent reason.

dhamlinmusic,

@simon @hmaealdeza Oh this is one of the great things about being a #blind #android user, almost without exception I can uninstall and reinstall every #accessibility app and service when something goes wrong for no obvious reason.

iPhone Tip. Message Shortcut. For someone that you send messages to a lot, would it be handy to have a shortcut on your home screen that when you double tap it, it brings up messages, fills in who it is to automatically, and it puts you in the edit field ready to type your message. Well, this can be done pretty easily using the shortcuts app and something called an URL Action. Here are the steps.
1, Open the shortcuts app and choose Create New Shortcut.
2, Need to search for the shortcut action to use. Go to the bottom of the screen and swipe left going back up the screen. After the dictate button will be the search edit box.
3, In the edit box, just type, Open Url.
4, Swipe right, and one of the search results will be Open URLS, double tap on that.
5, Go to the top of the screen if not there.
6, As you swipe, you will come to a done button, then you will hear, Open URLS, draggable, show actions menu, swipe one more time and you should hear, Open, URL. This is where you need to be.
7, Now, flick down and choose Edit URL. This will open an edit box and put the keyboard at the bottom of the screen. Even though you can swipe around the screen, you can still type in this edit box.
8, So type, with no spaces, sms, colon, then the phone number of the person you want to make this link for.
9, All done making the shortcut. Go to top of screen and hit the done button. Now you have to rename it and add it to your home screen.
Renaming Shortcut.
1, From the top of the screen, swipe and you should hear, Open URLS. This is the shortcut that you just made!
2, Do a single finger triple tap on the shortcut to bring up a pop up menu. Now while swiping across voiceover does not have focus on what it reads to you, so you have to go past what you are looking for and then swipe back before making your choice. So swipe across until you hear details, then swipe back to rename and Double tap it.
3, A rename window will pop up, swipe across and enter the name in the edit field.
4, Once finished, hit the done button.
Adding to the Home Screen.
1, do a single finger triple tap on the shortcut like you did before. This time choose details. Remember, to make sure voiceover has focus on the correct thing, swipe past the details button, then go back to it.
2, On the details screen, swipe to the button that says, Add To Home Screen. This will add the shortcut to your home screen. If you need to, you can move this shortcut just like you move any of apps, and put it where you want.
Enclosing, I do realize that there are other ways of sending messages, like with Siri, or maybe by using a widget. But for those who normally open the messages app, go to the compose button, or to the person in their list of conversations, this is definitely a quicker way. The best thing is that there are multiple ways of doing it, and having choices is always a good thing! 😄

Hey, just clone the Github repo, I thought.
Just edit one simple file, I thought.
Dude, you can surely add an accessibility label to that one button, it's easy, I thought.

Nope. There are contributor guidelines. There are tons of files, and maybe a storyboard I probably can't access on Windows. Ugh. I need to start with actually small things lol.

4 days left, £0.00 of £9.49 raised, and I'm getting desperate. I need to be able to call someone in an emergency as well as stay in contact with those I know and love, and I won't be able to do that without a phone number. So, please, every little helps!

Honestly, since the fast variants of the voices are a thing, I think I could really switch to the Sonata Neural Voices in NVDA full time. Now remember folks, these are AI voices. Scary, untrustworthy, AI voices that will smear your reputation all over fedi for using these voices! See, they even react to exclamation marks! Isn't that scary? :) Nah, the worst that'll happen, mainly with the HFC male and female, is that big numbers are garbled together. But every other voice does fine. I use Amy for work, and HFC for reading because those are among the most lively voices I've ever heard. And amazingly enough, we can make our own new voices. So, some people, from the Github repo's readme, are building more professional voices. And there are already versions of old TTS engines from the past that have been brought back to some semblence of life with this tech.
