My experience as an African researcher trying to travel to a conference in a wealthy country is not an isolated one. Of 10 invited speakers from low & middle income countries only 4 got visas"
Happy birthday to #biochemist Marie Maynard Daly (1921-2003), 1st Black woman to earn a PhD in #chemistry in the US! She made important research contributions to our understanding of the biochemisty of the cell nucleus & cardiovascular issues & the chemistry of histones & protein synthesis. She established that "no bases other than adenine, guanine, thymine, and cytosine were present in appreciable amounts" in DNA - #womenInSTEM#BlackInSTEM#histstm#printmaking#linocut#histmed#HeartDisease
An extraordinary American astronaut and science communicator for #BlackHistoryMonth: Mae Carol Jemison (born October 17, 1956) is a physician who became the first Black woman to travel in space when she went into orbit aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour for NASA, on September 12, 1992. She also has a B.S. in chemical engineering, served in the Peace Corps, is a dancer and choreographer, 🧵1/

The Software Sustainability Institute is running an inclusive research project with paid opportunities for research software engineers from systematically excluded groups to get involved in sessions Jan-Apr 2024.
For the #Spacetober prompt ‘historic launch vehicles’ it’s my portrait of #mathematician and NASA scientist Katherine Johnson (1918 – 2020). One of the first Black women employed as a NASA scientist (& its predecessor NACA), she was known for her mastery of complex manual calculations of orbital mechanics & played a pivotal role in the success of the US crewed spaceflights from the beginning.

“no bases other than adenine, guanine, thymine, and cytosine were present in appreciable amounts" in DNA - research which was cited when Watson & Crick accepted the Nobel Prize for the structure of DNA. She did some of the earliest work on the relationship between diet & cardiovascular health. She was 1st to show how cholesterol could clog arteries & that hypertension lead to atherosclerosis; these were invaluable discoveries in our understanding of heart attacks & work to lower the risk. 🧵2/n
the National Technical Association recognized Daly as one of the top 50 women in STEM. She was devoted to playing the flute, gardening & her dogs; when her cancer made flute playing difficult, she learned the guitar. She died in 2003, at the age of 82, in New York City.
Happy birthday to mathematician & NASA scientist Katherine Johnson (née Coleman; 1918 – 2020). One of the first Black women employed as a NASA scientist (and its predecessor NACA), she was known for her mastery of complex manual calculations of orbital mechanics and played a pivotal role in the success of the US crewed spaceflights from the beginning.
Field work is essential to the career of many #biologists; however, when working in the field while #black (FWB), everyday tasks conducted while in the field can be life-threatening..."
