More Drawing Day! Just finished this bear cub drawing! Took a few sessions in coffee shops and a cafeteria. Used my Pentel .3 (2B) and .5 mm (4B) pencils and tried the new .2 mm Pentel Orenz from Pentel Canada. Perfect for detailing, though the B lead is a bit hard. 2B lead coming.

It's that time again...I gotta get to work on my Maker Faire and SF Zine Festival applications, and cross my fingers that they accept me.

kristinHenry,
@kristinHenry@vis.social avatar

Do you know of any Art Festivals or Conferences that I should apply to?

I'm more interested in public facing events, so that I can expose more people to #SciArt and #Science in general.

But I'm open to more specialized conferences, if there's an actual interest there in my work.

I made a pattern of my linocut porcelain crab for #InsertAnInvert2024! Porcelain crabs, Neopetrolisthes maculatus are decapod crustaceans in the family Porcellanidae, which resemble true crabs but are in fact closer related to squat lobsters. These are 1 of at least 5 groups of decapod crustaceans which have evolved to be more crab-shaped in a process known as carsinisation. Find this on Spoonflower minouette shop

Tried out my new Leuchtturm 1917 A5 with this detailed drawing of a painted turtle. I love how the paper handles graphite and how bright white it is! Our pond has 14 painted turtles, which can live up to 40 years and survive winter by absorbing oxygen through their skin. #sciart

A porcelain crab for ! Looks like a crab, has crab in its name…is it a crab? Nope. False crab. Porcelain crabs, Neopetrolisthes maculatus are decapod crustaceans in the family Porcellanidae, which resemble true crabs but are in fact closer related to squat lobsters. They have flattened bodies as an adaptation for living in rock crevices. 🧵1/2

The cover of the 2007 book DINOSAUR, published by Roar, wasn't the original concept. Here is the original art, there would have been a plastic hologram eyeball (not shown here).

Happy birthday to Danish Inge Lehmann (1888 – 1993) who demonstrated that the Earth's core is not a single molten sphere, but contained an inner solid core, in ‘36. She was a pioneer , a brilliant seismologist & lived to be 105.

As she first postulated, the has roughly 3 equal concentric sections: mantle, liquid outer core & solid inner core. 🧵1/n

Happy birthday to founder of modern nursing, social reformer, statistician, data visualization innovator & writer Florence Nightingale (1820 – 1910)!
Nightingale earned the nickname "The Lady with the Lamp" during the Crimean War, from a phrase used by The Times, describing her as a “ministering angel” making her solitary rounds of the hospital at night with “a little lamp in her hand”. 🧵1/n

Sometimes, I express my frustrations with my art. In this piece, the words between the ants say "I'm so tired of this fascist sh*t".

Happy birthday to Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin (1900-1979), trailblazer for women in who discovered that hydrogen and helium are the most common elements in the universe.

Born England, she won a scholarship to Newnham College Cambridge in 1919 where she heard a lecture which changed her life. She wrote, “My world had been so shaken that I experienced something very like a nervous breakdown.” 🧵
