Someone I know suspects he's on the spectrum. We were talking recently about movies, and he can't watch most action or superhero movies. Mostly he has trouble with scenes that are very busy, lots of things happening -- he finds it overwhelming. He might even get a headache from those scenes. Is this a common thing?
On the other hand, he loves going to live music, and will go, usually by himself, to venues that might be crowded and loud.
Do others have the same mix of reactions? What's the difference? We're just trying to understand.

There's a coworker of mine who every few weeks runs some vinegar & hot water through our coffee system, which was previously serially neglected. You wouldn't believe the green colour of the wash water that comes out of the thing... Cleaning is worth it!

I've been mulling over a joke to the effect of "well maybe someone should fork the old MIT license redis to keep it going, and call it [good redis]", but does anyone use redis outside of corporate cloud scale software development? Like who else builds a nightmare microservice spaghetti monster only to realize in a panic that their "big data" fits entirely in ram?

@aeva
I use it for many smaller projects. Mastodon uses it.

I am really in need of a new bench digital #microscope and on a serious budget. I'm looking for something with a display as I need to be hands-free & ergonomic whilst working. Something with a 7 to 10 inch display or even #sdi out. Using for smd work. Recommendations appreciated or if anyone is selling, hit me up!

emacs vs vi

What's that all about? I've been messing about with Linux and commercial unixes since 1998, and I've never used emacs, nor met anybody who uses it. I assume it's a text editor (else why would it be vs vi), but apparently it can visit websites, join online chats, edit graphics, wash the dishes and solve world peace?

I'm not sure how I know this since, to repeat, I've never knowingly met anybody, in person, or virtually, who uses it. What's going on?

I used emacs for a stint in the early oughts. I don't remember a single command. I'm gonna fire it up and get stuck in it for a few days.

As a fun aside, my son is an emacs user, where I'm vim.

Desperate to hold onto their ever-shrinking workforce, but still unwilling to walk back their ignorance and lose face, Dell management thinks, “hey, let's screw our healthiest, most productive employees using whatever leverage we have left,” is the way?

On March 18, after more than 150 days of Israel’s genocidal war, the New Democratic Party (NDP) is bringing forward an Opposition Day motion to Parliament calling on Canada to take concrete measures in support of Palestinian human rights.

But Biden is somehow not fascist? Sure. Just like when the entire world including his entire staff told him to call a ceasefire and instead he sent billions of dollars worth of bombs and weapons.

But yeah, go ahead and ignore all the evidence. Ignore and excuse his actions. Pretend you really believe you're doing the right thing. You will still be soaked in blood you will NEVER get off.

    There's practically no "fi" left in #sciFi... The last decade has churned out one limp sci-fi wetdream after another. Hoverboards (that don't hover), self-driving cars (that can't), civilians in space (read: billionaires), AI (that is anything but), and now - the long-anticipated and almost entirely useless see through display.

    The result of spoiled tech billionaire babies skimming a century of science fiction's implicit warnings of the ramifications of unchecked technology with societal inequality. They have failed to ingest any of the point.

    Lazyweb help please.

    Need a URL for a UK supplier of 3M Aura, N95, disposable, non-valved face masks for Covid protection. Preferably a box of 10 or 20.

    I can't find my way through 3M's product numbers or supplier websites.

    It's a simple question. Why is it hard?

    sb,

    @jbond @trendless @mycams @TalktoBeverley

    FWIW these are my daily-driver - I wear them all day at work, sometimes 16 hour days (rotating).

    Upside: very comfy for long periods and amazing breathability. Low to no glasses fog or moisture builsup. Nose fit is very flexible. They smell great.

    Cons: I need to wear a beanie and a neck gaiter (buff®) to keep the head straps in place, but with them it's set-and-forget.

    I feel confident in these masks.

    I've used both the 1863 and 9330 - the only visual difference seemed to be the colour of the straps.

    @sb@fed.sbcloud.cc avatar

    The province of #NewBrunswick is home to the largest oil refinery in #canada. It uses a LOT of electricity -- so much that in order to avoid grid strain and save $$, they built their own 88MW LNG-burning power plant.

    We are also home to two "small" #cryptomines which combined consume 96MW of electricity.

    The rapid expansion of #oilAndGas, #LNG, #crypto, and #dataCenters threaten to destabilise grids world-wide. This is a big problem, and communities need to do more to STOP these projects cold!

    NB government despite their track record of sadistic ineptitud, banned our power utility from servicing any future crypto mines.

    If we can do it here, you can do it there.

    Has anyone published any research on whether drawing on an N95 mask using a sharpie affects its filtration?

    I mean, I expect that it would, but I'm curious nevertheless. And to what degree.

    sb,
    @sb@fed.sbcloud.cc avatar

    @kboyd

    The ink will DEFINITELY interact with the material of the mask. I've wondered this same question many times. I know that fall arrest tethers which are made out of dozens of layers of incredibly strong fabric are considered garbage if someone writes on them with marker.

    I would definitely risk it if I was using the mask just for dust protection, but not for viruses.

    Sometimes I do wonder why I speak up about certain things like the Fedipact and about the Public Health Pledge.

    I can't ignore that . None of us can when our systems impact our human rights. We can't when our wish to let stuff slide impacts community safety.

    Why am I unable to ignore the issues. Why do I risk alienating my family, friends and professional folk around me.

    I can't you see. It's the legacy of those before me. Any less, I'd spit on their memory.

    My last day at work has been scheduled. In just 3 shifts, my 25 year career in #proAudio comes to a screeching halt while I enter the terrifying world of #disabilityInsurance.

    All this because I caught #covid19, once, at work, in June 2022, despite having 4 vaccines.

    The first 12 weeks were bad. Then I got a little worse each week. My weight tanked. I am 6' 3 and was a little over 200lbs (my normal weight). A year and a half later, I presently weigh 145 and dropping.

    I was diagnosed with #meCFS, #PEM, #POTS, and am still having tests (CT, gastroscopy, biopsy) done on my GI.

    #LongCovid is very real, and has robbed me of the luxury of clear though, easy movement, and a "normal" life.

    Don't get Covid. Don't get Covid again. #WearAMask, please.
