    It looks likely that I will be looking at #LTD and the death of my audio career. I need some advice and a rundown of what it's actually like to go through.

    Bonus if you have navigated the system with #cfs or #longcovid, as that's what's got me.

    How about just this once, we all allow ourselves a pass and just vote for the one that is the least the worst, to make sure we AT LEAST keep our democracies.

    It will be much easier to fix if our baseline is democratic rather than fascist. It's taken hundreds of years to get this far.

    > More than 50 countries that combined are home to half the planet's population are due to hold national elections in 2024, with huge implications for human rights, economies, international relations and prospects for peace in a volatile world.

    @violetmadder
    Compared to just 100 years ago, absolutely the world is more democratic. It's still no where good enough, but going backwards ain't the way forward. In Canada at least, given where everything is, we are in serious danger of a spite vote because Trudeau sucks. He does suck, and I don't want to vote for him either. I want all the politicians to line up for EI and allow anarchist workers to run the country. I really don't want to have to spend the rest of the decade fighting for stuff I already fought 20 years ago.

    I don't have the strength to make it any harder on my self. A lot of us are barely alive after Covid. We need some time to recoup.

    Until there's an uprising worth getting behind, what choice do we have?

    sb,
    @sb@fed.sbcloud.cc avatar

    @violetmadder
    There's a huge difference between "hush up and swallow" and "don't revenge vote for the worst one". But I'm otherwise with you 100%.

    Since 50% percent of the country can't even be bothered to vote half the time, how will we get them together in time?

    I'm all for a complete revolution, and I hope I love long enough to be a part of it. I just do not see it happening here, and certainly not in a year. Maybe if we hadn't been rushed back to work to be maimed we would have clearer heads. Unfortunately the "regular people" are not yet inconvenienced enough.

    @richlitt
    The main and probably easiest to transition to would be #Ghost. You can move to ghost.org, or another 3rd-party host, or host it yourself!

    Migration guide: https://ghost.org/docs/migration/substack/

    Official site: https://ghost.org/

    There is also #Buttondown which I haven't checked out myself yet, but it's the next most popular alternative.

    Migration guide: https://www.wired.com/story/how-to-migrate-newsletter-substack-to-buttondown/

    Official site: https://buttondown.email/

    If you're not too concerned with the monetization aspects and into something clean & barebones, you could also consider #writeFreely (I use this myself).

    https://writefreely.org/

    #Wordpress is also an option, but I'm hesitant to recommend it, as #wp is a whole thing in it's own.

    I hope that helps!

    I'd say make an appeal to your followers, members, etc. Spell out why you don't want your organisation to be affiliated with or support muskcorp. Make them feel it. Give them a better place to go - pick a server and explain how to get there.

    Better still run your own server for them! If you feel the need to sweeten the pot a bit, point out that their handles will be @whomever. That's way cooler than just a generic twitter url.

    It reads quite legit to me, and in their recommendations they offer both proprietary and Foss alternatives, and they even recommend some of their largest competitors. I'd say that feels pretty legitimately helpful to me.

    What if some scruffy Bitcoin bro was down, say $44 billion, and he realized he had access to the communications channel of a government regulator who hadn't come to realize said dude had destroyed the once-sane media outlet? Would he use that as a way to get a quick billion by nefarious means? One wonders, but surely it's too far fetched.

    sb,
    @sb@fed.sbcloud.cc avatar

    @ottaross
    Unfortunately it's entirely plausible. Furthermore, we've seen evidence that basically the chunk of data comprising the Arab Spring protests "vanished", probably into Saudi hands. That was done for someone.

    I'm sure - like PHP - it's come a long way in those many years. I really ought to check it out.

    Thanks for the encouragement :)

    I feel like it could use some champions right now, with the movement to rip it all out of the Linux kernel.

    Last night I saw #OnTheBeach staring Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner.

    At first, life seems pretty swell for the hip-set military crowd at the onset of the middle sixties, but an ominous undertone begins to surface, revealing the hideous reality that life on earth was about to become extinct - in waves, no one entirely sure when - but certain of it's arrival.

    Through the course of the film we follow several different relationships, and a plethora of reactions to the impending cull - all meant to hold a mirror to some facet of ourselves, desperate to remind us all: "there's still time, but it's running out".

    Just as applicable, only a little more real, and a lot more urgent, this 65 years later.

    You can watch it for free, legally, below, thanks to #InternetArchive!

    I'll never forget that feeling from the beginning of the pandemic that a better world was possible. People had a moment to breathe and they started making changes. They quit their jobs, left toxic relationships, moved cities or left the city, relearned forgotten skills from generations past, and started to question their institutionally approved goals and values.

    It scared the shit out of people in power, which is why they have been weaponizing our emotions and breaking and gardening our hearts ever since.

    We have an instinct to protect the community and the system has been trying to degrade that instinct for decades with sophisticated propaganda, but the good side of people is still there. We just need a moment to breathe.

    The good part of us is battered and bruised, but not yet dead. I don't think people forget. I think they've seen that something is wrong and that we could do better.

    I think there's still hope.

    I stayed up til 5am one night during the initial lockdown, talking to a friend on House party about the incredible opportunity in front of us, once we saw how the world kept turning with the capitalist machine put on pause.

    It was SLOOOOOWWW.
    The planes stopped.
    The cars & trucks all but disappeared.
    Nature came back, quickly.
    Countries issued #ubi for the first time.
    We were working together, globally.
    It was the time to change it.
    To retrain masses to build infrastructure.
    Wind and solar power, highspeed rail, new safe hospitals, new safe schools.
    Flood prevention, forest fire prevention.
    A place for everyone to live.
    A purpose for all.

    We had the time.
    We had the money.
    We had the will.

    We had oligarchs to contend with.
    We got bullied out of it before we even knew what happened.
    We were lied to.
    We're dying and becoming disabled en mass.

    It's almost as if the oligarchs won't go gentle into that good night.
