When new services join the #SocialWeb, it works best if there's an associated default app. Everything shares the #ActivityPub protocol but an app can be designed to best deal with a certain type of content. I use #Pocket by @mozilla right now for articles, but it's not federated. I wonder if @omnivore can't be the default app for our AP enabled #WordPress #Ghost and #Buttondown future.

I've removed JetPack from https://shawnhooper.ca/

All e-mail subscribers via JetPack have been sent an email with how to follow me via e-mail (#buttondown newsletter), or RSS feed.

Thanks to a suggestion from @JosKleverWebSupport I'm trying out Koko Analytics (WordPress plugin) for very basic analytics.

First edition of Cybercultural to go out in the post-Substack era! Now using Eleventy and Buttondown -> In 2006, Read/WriteWeb gets a redesign and I begin to grow the team, starting with a couple of engineers who help me explain Amazon Web Services and GoogleOS. https://cybercultural.com/p/018-birth-of-cloud-computing/

@ricmac I just unsubscribed via email but only so I could instead subscribe to the https://cybercultural.com #RSS feed.

Speaking of which, your #Buttondown page at https://buttondown.email/ricmac has a prominent RSS link (yay) but it goes to a separate empty feed (boo).

So I think the migration of my Doctor's Note newsletter #substack to #Buttondown is complete. Thanks to Justin from @buttondown for adding in redirects from the Substack URL slugs so that old links and searches go to the right place (and fixing up the image CSS). Here it is at its new home: https://newsletter.polaine.com

(Sidenote: the best thing I did was to use a custom domain on Substack just in case I ever had to do this. All the content now lives at the same URLs from before)

Help is out there if you or your organisation are wanting to transition off of dangerous and socially irresponsible (and sometimes downright evil) corporate web services! Regain autonomy of your data, and stop supporting at the same time!

We can help you transition away from:

  • Substack
  • Twitter
  • Facebook/Instagram
  • Dropbox, iCloud, etx
  • Amazon/Audible
  • Google
  • Almost anything else!

You're in the right place already! Just pop up your hand and let us know what you need!

Let us help empower you and your community!

@richlitt
The main and probably easiest to transition to would be #Ghost. You can move to ghost.org, or another 3rd-party host, or host it yourself!

Migration guide: https://ghost.org/docs/migration/substack/

Official site: https://ghost.org/

There is also #Buttondown which I haven't checked out myself yet, but it's the next most popular alternative.

Migration guide: https://www.wired.com/story/how-to-migrate-newsletter-substack-to-buttondown/

Official site: https://buttondown.email/

If you're not too concerned with the monetization aspects and into something clean & barebones, you could also consider #writeFreely (I use this myself).

https://writefreely.org/

#Wordpress is also an option, but I'm hesitant to recommend it, as #wp is a whole thing in it's own.

I hope that helps!

I’m excited to announce that my new #personalwebsite is live ✨

https://philipptemmel.com

I finally have a tiny home on the internet again, dedicated to what I am passionate about, and filled with what I am reading, writing, and working on (coming soon).

This is not just a designer's portfolio it is a representation of myself. I got inspired by loads of folks, but especially @matthiasott, his posts and newsletter has been among the driving forces to finish my personal website. 😊 #indieweb

@philipp@mastodon.design avatar

To celebrate the launch I published two posts to my #personalblog.

"Welcome to my Tiny Home on the Internet" (https://www.philipptemmel.com/writings/tiny-home-on-the-internet ) is the story about my journey of building my #personalwebsite.

Inspired by @robb + the #HemisphericViews podcast, I gathered my #AppDefaults in another post (https://www.philipptemmel.com/writings/app-defaults-2023).

I also set up a newsletter on #buttondown called Datest (https://buttondown.email/philipp) which I will write casually to share updates about my site, writings, and interesting links.

It's so much harder to talk about sexual fantasy than it is to decry certain skin colors and genders as not human. Even those comments on 's announcement were alternately "eww, porn is gross" and "hang on, let's see what the Nazis have to say."

#Substack allowing hate speech on their platform aside, it’s simply a terrible user experience from the reader’s perspective. #Buttondown newsletters are so much nicer. It’s plain text! It supports dark mode! It does not try to get readers to download an app! Or try to get readers to create an account! I understand that writers prioritize growing their audiences more than reader experience, but as a reader I wish all email newsletters are more like that.

since #buttondown email is still blocked in indonesia, i thought about self-hosting the backend for my newsletter service on the same server as my personal site, but boy did i severely underestimate how much horsepower a mass-mailing service takes. just running the PHP library without sending anything ate up 1 GB of my host's physical memory.
