The move back to the office is certainly underway, with working from home being de-normalised & back to an exception (if now more frequent).
But what is the impact on those who for health or mobility reasons are only able to work from home.
In many ways WFH was (accidentally?) a boon for 'disabled' employment, allowing many to access jobs that would have been difficult if attendance at office was required.
How will their opportunities fare in the move away from WFH?
"Return-to-office mandates at some of the most powerful #tech companies — #Apple, #Microsoft and #SpaceX — were followed by a spike in departures among the most senior, tough-to-replace talent...
Study on return-to-office mandates gets international attention | University Times | University of Pittsburgh
"The results showed that while many of the companies said they were bringing employees back to the office to improve the bottom line, there were no significant changes in financial performance or firm values after the mandates were implemented. But there was a sharp decrease in employees’ job satisfaction."
Folks, I'm starting my post-#PhD job search low-key on the side while I write up my #thesis.
I have an odd collection of skills - #Linux, #Python, #Jupyter, #pandas, #DevRel, and I've done a lot of work in team leadership and management, and have led a multi-million $ not for profit in the past. Keynote speaker.
I'm looking for something that harnesses all of these skills - and it will be a senior role with senior pay, given my experience, qualifications and proven capability. I have time and will be discerning about my next step.
Job titles that might fit here would be Senior Research Engineer, Engineering Lead, Lead AI Engineer or similar.
Looking for fully remote work, with one day a fortnight max in #Melbourne, AU. If you don't believe in #RemoteWork or #WFH, we're not a good fit.
Super keen on something full time rather than splitting my attention over multiple part-time roles.
Looking to start around August, so a fair amount of lead time.
Keen on organisations that have strong values alignment - #FAIR and #CARE data use, #EthicalAI, AI for social good.
The craze by inflexible managers for forcing workers back into the office has to stop. It's made worse when they demand 100% office time and 0% work from home, or doing a bait-and-switch by offering work from home but then changing the deal. It's bad for everyone, but especially bad for women who have additional pressure on them for family and health reasons (in addition to the usual workplace sexism).
Listen to women.
"No", the boss said, "I can't let you do that. You see, I am in charge of more than 100 people here. And if I let YOU work from home and be more focused and productive, thereby contributing more to the success of this company, more employees will want the same privileges as you. Before we know it, EVERYONE in this company could be getting out of this noisy work place and be more focused and productive working from home… and we can't have that, can we? Go back to your desk Tom." #CompanyLogic
@randahl
That’s a #redflag in the current workplace environment and a hint to start looking for external opportunities. Thankfully there are many companies who have embraced #remotework / Work From Home #wfh
Now that I have a job and a start date, I'm able to end my Job Seekers Allowance claim.
Oh my word, these people are not prepared for people to actually get a job. At my initial interview they went into great detail about how I'd be penalised for not seeking work. When she asked if I had questions I said yes, what do I do when I find work? It wasn't something they felt they needed to cover.
I went in today and it was like I was from another planet.

I've used the desk walking treadmill for 1 week now, and I can say for sure I need less coffee. Moving has the same energizing effect as caffeine. And yea, you can code and walk at the same time. Just walk very slowly.
Reason #49 for why my desk is on wheels. I can move it to any part of the office or even basement if I so choose. It’s a wide desk with a UPS on the left hand side. I can move anywhere within 8’ of a power outlet. #WFH
Defeated CEOs are now conceding hybrid working is here to stay (fortune.com)
Last year, 62% said they expected a full-time return to the office, but KPMG's data shows they're backtracking.
