A review of nearly 2000 studies of #workingfromhome confirms what many knew already: 'there are ways to make the home working approach actually work well for the organisation & also for the employee'!
But first you have to convince #managers who see #WFH as undermining their power & are as a result are keen to have intrusive #surveillance as part of any acceptance of #HybridWorking.
I was working on an abstract with my headphones on and I asked myself why do I smell Fritos? I turned around and there Moxxi was, sitting behind me in silence like a serial killer. And let me tell you, it must have been a great nap because my girl had been FERMENTING.
Back in 2010 I founded the #NonProfit@freetechproject which I still work for and thankfully enables me to #WFH#CovidCautious while caring for my partner who has #LongCovid -- facilitating #OnlineLearning via relaxed, fun and friendly video meetups with predominantly older people that have remained our only method of delivery since 2020. The organisation is seeking to add to its board of directors and it'd be great to have interest from UK folks passionate about increasing online engagement and tackling social isolation, as well as #EthicalTechnology#FOSS#fundraising#PublicHealth and, yes, the fact #CovidIsNotOver. Please spread the word, and/or get in touch if you're interested! Thanks! @onepict@privacydingus@kathimmel@crowgirl
Back when I used to work in an office, I would always #bake a #cake on Sunday evening and bring it the next morning to the office to share with my colleagues, for what we lovingly called #TGIM... It certainly made coming in after the weekend a little bit nicer.
Of course, I don't want to give up all the freedom and flexibility I get from #WFH, but this sense of camaraderie is something that I do miss.
If you don't fight ableism when you're abled (and think it doesn't affect you), then you're leaving systemic ableism in place for when it does affect you (RTO) and also for if/when you become temporarily or permanently disabled yourself.
The best time to fight #ableism was a long time ago, but the next best time is NOW.
one interesting impact of #workingfromhome has been a reduction in burglaries in areas with relatively high concentrations of #WFH households (one might call them #middleclass neighbourhoods?).
But, this may have displaced robberies & break-ins into areas with relatively less WFH households; those who work in sectors from hospitality to manufacturing, that require physical presence.. (shall we say #workingclass households?).
> Across industries, U.S. work from home roles have shrunk by a quarter since 2021, new data from software firm Ringover finds.
> Forget the fact that nearly every expert insists that flexible work arrangements—guided principally by employee desires—are the way of the future. Disregard, too, the fact that many workers insist they’re more productive working from home—and more likely to feel empowered to do their best work under a boss who allows them to work where they want. And pretend you don’t know that return-to-office mandates are near-universally reviled and lead to rapid retention issues, bitter company culture, and swelling resentment—with worsened productivity to boot.
Donald Knight, chief people officer at Greenhouse argues that forcing workers back into the office is harmful to a company culture and its bottom line.
Camilla Cavendish (FT) makes the argument that while #workingfromhome can be great for mid-career #workers with families, for the newly employed having already sent their #university years online, #wfh may actually be not only socially isolating, they will miss out on the tacit knowledge (and network) building of office life, and indeed may find a lack of visibility (and casual interaction) will adversely impact their career(s).
The evidence may not yet be in, but this is far from implausible!
During the height of the pandemic, I got to go to #Work in person. I count my blessings, honestly, that I was not forced to #WFH.
I am also lucky that now I get to work from home sometimes. Just set up an actual work space for myself Monday night to see what all the fuss is about. :thonkpad:
Major #rain coming tomorrow - and yes, we need it, and Yay! I don’t have to go out in it unless I want to. #Blessed and #lucky and #grateful.
Return-to-office mandates: often not succeeding in making cos. more profitable *acc to new paper: how RTO mandates impact productivity & performance. If RTO mandates are hard to enforce, they probably don't make sense for that workplace.
