"Ad blockers are unethical—ads are how they pay to keep the lights on!”

Exactly. It's how THEY pay to keep the lights on. It's not how I pay for anything. I didn't agree to see ads, although I'm ok with some ads; what I definitely didn't do is agree to be tracked and profiled and have arbitrary third-party code running on my computer just so I could read this awful, pointless, SEO-ified shitfest of an article that doesn't come close to answering the question I was googling.

The modern corporate obsession with data is beyond incorrect, it's obscene.

If I order a pizza, there's no universe where the social contract should include a follow-up email about a survey. IT'S A PIZZA. And moreover, I PAID FOR IT WITH MONEY. You are not entitled to 5 minutes of my time to fill out your fucking survey.

Any marketer or data scientist who tells you that every pizza that gets ordered should also generate a survey request email IS FULL OF SHIT and is ABUSING YOUR CUSTOMERS.

Something tonight reminded me of an old Twitter rant (sorry, no citation—I am not logging in) to the effect of “GenX is middle aged now. Your 50-something asshole landlord is Generation X, not a Boomer."

I believe the OP's point was about our stereotypes of generations becoming ossified, but I also recall some people taking it as "It’s not just boomers—all the olds are bad!”

But Millennials aren't magic. In another ten years or so, they will be 50-something asshole landlords, too.

I’m coming to love #Mastodon’s boost culture. Everybody’s all like, “Follow everyone! Boost it all!”

In the Blue Place, it felt like we were all competing for attention. Here, it’s more like we’re cooperating for attention.

At one level, that doesn’t make sense—everyone still has only so much attention to spend. But it feels better, and without The Algorithm enforcing power law, winner-take-all dynamics, the boost culture does seem to lift a lot of voices that were drowned out over there.

If you require candidates to have 5+ years of experience at anything, then the job you are hiring for is by definition NOT "entry level."

EDIT: I'm getting some pushback on this, so let me make the following clarification:

If you require candidates to have 5+ years of experience at anything, then the job you are hiring for is by definition NOT "entry level," YOU STUPID ASSHOLE.

Here’s the thing about the “Invisible Hand”:

Regulators didn’t put microplastics in your water.

The nanny state didn’t lie to you about whether tobacco products caused cancer.

Socialism didn’t decide to take a third of your paycheck for health insurance coverage, and then still do everything in its power to deny your claims for lifesaving care.

Capitalists pursuing their self-interest did all of that, and more.

Boss: Why haven't you done any of the work I gave you?

Me: What work?

Boss: From my emails!

Me: Oh, I deleted those.

Boss: WHAT?!

Me: I thought they were phishing attempts.

Boss: Why?

Me: The IT security training said typos and unexpected requests were clues to spot phishing.

In the wake of Elon Musk’s admission that he has destroyed 50% of Twitter’s primary revenue stream and revelation of his plan to throw away most of the remaining brand equity, can we please stop saying, “He’s destroying it on purpose!”

Quit. Simping. For. Elon. The only reason you believe this must be deliberate is because you refuse to let go of the idea that he’s a genius and must know what he’s doing.

He’s not. He doesn’t. And meanwhile, you’re doing better PR work than anyone at Twitter.

Blocking somebody? Baller move. You’re in charge of your account. You decide who has access to you.

Telling someone, “I’m blocking you for that!” immediately before blocking them? Baby move. Your dysfunctional obsession with getting the last word in is showing.

"If we can't fill the offices, commercial real estate will CRASH!"

So I have to commute just to line real estate investors' pockets?

"But a commercial real estate crash could TANK the whole economy!"

I shouldn't have to spend an hour of unpaid time in my car every day to "save" the economy.

"But downtown coffee shops and bistros and dry cleaner are closing!"

That's more sympathetic than the real estate moguls, but again: NOT. MY. RESPONSIBILITY.

Heard two different podcasts this week that talked about #VisionPro being a "dystopian" product, and also specifically calling out in-office use.

I'm receptive to the former charge, although I don't feel that way (not very strongly, in any case), but the latter I disagree strongly with. Is Vision Pro at work more dystopian than open-plan offices are today? Is it more dystopian than an office full of low-wall cubes, monitors positioned facing out so everyone can see everyone else's screens?

I saw someone say Elon Musk is worth $185 billion.

Which is absurd. Elon Musk HAS $185 billion in assets at the moment, maybe. But that’s not what he’s WORTH.

If something happened to Elon, we wouldn’t pay $185 billion to get another one.

If at first you don't succeed, don't sweat it, your parents are rich.

Wait. Your parents aren't rich?

Oh, man. This is embarrassing. Sorry, all of these success aphorisms are meant for people with privilege and resources.

You're on your own. Good luck.

Elon Musk may or may not be deliberately tanking Twitter, but if you believe he could run it well and has simply chosen not to, you're as big a simp as the rightwing bluechecks.

He's not a genius. This is him working at the limits of his capabilities. This is who he is.

You don’t want to use Microsoft Word because you hate closed-source, corporate software? I get it.

You don’t want to use Word because your corporate, closed-source provider of choice is Apple or Google? I get it.

You don’t want to use Word because you want something simpler? I get it.

You don’t want to use Word because you prefer one of the alternatives? I get it.

You don’t want to use Word because you think something does what it does better than it does? You are out of your mind.
