“I have seen the extremely restrictive off-boarding agreement that contains nondisclosure and non-disparagement provisions former OpenAI employees are subject to. It forbids them, for the rest of their lives, from criticizing their former employer. Even acknowledging that the NDA exists is a violation of it.

If a departing employee declines to sign the document, or if they violate it, they can lose all vested equity they earned during their time at the company”

There's someone in the boarding area in Vibram Five fingers. Wanna bet they're on their way to ?

If you depend on Google for your income, you need to have a plan B as soon as you can:

Nothing says “alpha male” like shooting your company in the foot because you can’t handle a woman disagreeing with you.

Hopefully the beta version will ship soon. https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/inside-story-elon-musks-mass-firings-tesla-supercharger-staff-2024-05-15/

Ah. I see.

acdha,
@acdha@code4lib.social avatar

@swelljoe @fasterthanlime as soon as I see that ng prefix I’m reminded of the Angular project where – again for a web form which a 1995 browser could have handled – someone noticed that something was missing after the ~2 minute load time, and the ARCHITECT asked whether it was possible for network connections to fail.

It turns out that turning each element on the page into separate network requests is bad for everything except your server vendor.

Gonna go on a Mastodon sabbatical because I'm getting dogpiled on.

Someone even stalked me by email.

Stalked me. To let me know I'm "abusive".

Fuck that.

acdha,

@thomasfuchs that's horrible. Take care of yourself.

What a con it is, that everyday people have become convinced that the bound purpose of a company is to direct cash to its investors however it can.

People realized this was shitty when the colonial exploitation companies did it, when the robber barons did it, when the banks did it (1920s), and when the banks did it again in the 1980s, kind of; when financial markets did it in the 2000s, faintly; when banks did it again in 2008 to 2011, in vain, and when companies milk "inflation" now, nothing.

acdha,
@acdha@code4lib.social avatar

@falcon I’ve even seen people confidently assert that companies have a duty to break rules to maximize shareholder value, as if that’s some kind of law rather than simply an excuse.

Amazing how eager companies are to "move as fast as possible to the cloud", and then they see the bill.

acdha,
@acdha@code4lib.social avatar

@petrillic Granted, many companies would also balk if they were confronted with the full bill for self-hosting a given application.

I feel like this falls into the common trap of looking for technical fixes for social problems, where it should be questions like “will the cloud allow you to tighten feedback loops?” or “does the cloud reduce conflicting organizational incentives?”

acdha,
@acdha@code4lib.social avatar

@petrillic Also how many organizations will treat this as no big deal. I've lost count of the number of times someone has done something like compare AWS RDS or S3 with the assumption that their on-premise staff are free and it's like … shouldn't you know how much time they spend supporting your existing systems? It seems like an important detail.

📝 On Hashtag Accessibility

I’m calling myself out for this because until about a month ago, I used hashtags all the wrong way on my social media posts.

You can make your posts easier with screen readers with a tiny change:

> Capitalize the first letter of each word in your hashtag

https://micro.webology.dev/2024/05/14/on-hashtag-accessibility.html

acdha,
@acdha@code4lib.social avatar

@webology I much prefer this style - one of my only gripes with @ivory is that it autocompletes to the lowercase form even if you always correct it.

acdha,
@acdha@code4lib.social avatar

@ivory @webology is there a server setting which could affect that? It sometimes works but doesn’t enough to be noticeable and something like a size limit or time window might explain that.

acdha,
@acdha@code4lib.social avatar

@ivory a little testing narrowed it down to two things:

  1. the list of previously-used values is per account so when I started to enter a hashtag I normally use on a different account it didn’t get the capitalized form unless I switched accounts first.

  2. The iOS sharing extension doesn’t appear to use it even if I switch accounts first.

acdha,
@acdha@code4lib.social avatar

@ivory it’s super slow but I get this list when I type a hash sign:

You know why car dealers charge these insane markups?

Because people get in line to pay them. 🤦‍♂️

acdha,
@acdha@code4lib.social avatar

@major this reminds me of the gamers who whine about buggy preorders, DLC, etc. but can never seem to stop paying. Nobody needs a Land Rover so once you’re not walking, they know it’s just a question of how much far away they are from the VP’s yacht helipad.

Just rolled the absolute hell out of my ankle while on my final trip loading up the car for a 12-hour dive with family so my plans have changed to lying in the ground and yelling which is going great

acdha,
@acdha@code4lib.social avatar

@jamiemccarthy @waldoj I bet they also factor the likelilikelihood of bad media coverage into it. Refusing to cover a device means lawmakers are hearing about the insurance company stranding someone unable to walk out.
