We live in a world full of morally bankrupt and ethically depraved monsters who are entirely driven by selfish interests and materialistic greed and find the concept of having a moral compass and caring about human causes as extremely unjust and horrific as genocide completely incomprehensible, and in many cases, outrageous.

Very tempted to migrate my static site hosting from Netlify to Cloudflare Pages (https://pages.dev). It just makes sense with unlimited bandwidth, DNSSEC and faster loading. Netlify UX is much better and friendlier to work with though especially with its config file, CLI and AI, and Cloudflare seems to be a bit rough around the edges in some areas.

Linux experts: I have the 6.5 and 6.1 kernels installed, but system boots automatically into 6.1 -- any guidance on why that's happening and how (or whether) I can force it to boot into 6.5?

(Assuming a GRUB issue but I don't want to muck with that in a casual way...)

Nour,

@dangillmor On Ubuntu/Debian based distros you can remove old kernels with sudo apt autoremove --purge. But unsure if this gets rid of 6.1 while being booted into 6.1 as it's supposed to remove old 'unused' kernels, so you'd likely have to at least boot into 6.5 first.

I'm still trying to find a good Mastodon front end or app. I tried Tuba, but I don't care for it. I'm using Elk right now, and I'm mixed on it. May end up making that my first project. I'm rusty af on JS and I know no Ruby at all. My HTML and CSS is better than it was, but still rusty af.

Nour,

@thelinuxcast I've heard a lot of good things about Mastodon Bird UI. https://indieweb.social uses it, Twitter replica.

"Small gradual exposures to heat can help the human body build tolerance to rising temperatures and allow oil companies to keep on profiting from the climate disaster, fossil fuel profiteers say"

Fixed the headline. Wonder what we're going to eat though when the water dries up, crops die and animals go extinct.

The paywall on this somehow makes it even better and screams everything wrong with capitalism today.

I have really come to love Mastodon. So much so, I have followed everyone I found interesting, and everyone who has followed me.

Now I am following 7,500 people, and while I really enjoy that, Mastodon now prevents me from following anyone else.

I do not understand, why Mastodon would have such a rule. To me it seems very counterproductive to the whole concept of connecting with people from all over the world.

I've never needed a VPN, but I do now in Canada. I'm told so many are scams. Recommendations, anyone?

    Nour,

    @shoq https://privacyguides.org/vpn - everything else is a scam.

I use Proton VPN since I have an Unlimited subscription, which includes Mail, Drive, Pass etc. Works really well.

@Sheril Nothing makes me lose it more than companies saying they will be powered by x% green energy by 2030. No, the time is NOW and the only acceptable amount is 100%.

If we don't act now and the change we make isn't disruptively radical and significant, it'll be way too late.

The official Mastodon app for Android is really good now. Feels super well polished and feature complete.

    Nour,

@hughcorner Yeah it could do with some. I'd personally love more theme options. For all of the basics though it's awesome and I used to recommend Tusky but I'd definitely recommend this instead now for new people.

"The best way to spot an idiot? Look for the person who is cruel. The kindest person in the room is often the smartest. Empathy and compassion are evolved states of being."

This is the speech of the year. I've always found it remarkable how easy it is to hate – it's a primal emotion that often comes from ignorance and requires no intellectual effort.

Illinois Governor J. B. Pritzker's commencement speech at Northwestern University.

    Nour,

@Natanox I think his points are very valid but maybe the delivery is not too detailed or complete, since it's unclear whether he means the human default state is hate or if it's just one of the primal urges. Humans are inherently good, although nurturing plays a role (i.e. growing in a hateful environment) among other factors (like perceived threat) and it's easy to let primal instincts and teachings (including religious) cloud proper judgment and emotional intelligence which requires intellect.

    Nour,

@Natanox It's an interesting philosophical debate, like egoism vs. altruism and whether we do acts of goodwill because we're truly altruistic or if it's just to feel good about ourselves etc. I think something a lot of people don't realize is they have a lot in common with each other, even if they're enemies. We tend to have the same basic human needs and ends, but usually differ over the means.

    Nour,

@Natanox Take security as an example. For Republicans, this means being against foreigners and owning guns for self-protection. For Democrats, foreigners aren't even a perceived threat, while guns are not needed because everyone is more protected if they can't use a weapon as lethal as a gun. If you can look past the differences with the means (i.e. agree to disagree) and focus on the ends/needs, you can easily unite people when they realize that they're the same.

    Nour,

@Natanox I just wanted to give a well known example where there's a lot of polarization, but I'm not sure if it's the best. A lot of Republicans are too far gone where it's borderline fascism. Everyone wants security and safety, everyone wants to be loved, etc. and some people resort to pure evil to achieve it.

    Nour,

@miczi Illinois governor, JB Pritzker. I was surprised and thought he was a scholar or something. Comes across as very intelligent.
