Holy shit. It's not just that the #Lemmy dev is a tankie, he's a LaRouche conspiracy-brain NazBol. Okay #fediverse tell me how this isn't as bad as Gleason's Soapbox and how you are separating art & artist because making them a Eugen-level BDFL just has to happen because of the #Reddit exodus.

On this day 90 years ago the Nazis ransacked the first gender clinic in the West.

On May 6, 1933, a Nazi student group marched to the Institute for Sexual Science in Berlin. With members of the SA, they ransacked the institute and looted its library and archives. Days later, the stolen books, artifacts, and clinical files were destroyed in one of several public book burnings organized across Germany. A bust of Hirschfeld was paraded through the streets on a stick before being thrown onto the bonfire.

Moved to a #Iceshrimp, #Firefish, #Sharkey or #Misskey instance and missing watching #Hashtags? Well do I have something for you!!

Antennas.
Antennas are effectively custom timelines. They work approximately like watching hashtags, but they can look for normal text as well. You can add as many phrases as you like and the results can be filtered with an ignore list.

You can make an antenna that just shows posts from specific users and notifies you when they post something new, you can make an antenna that collects posts containing or excluding certain key words, or you can make an antenna that collects only posts with files attached. You can even make an antenna consisting of “Posts from specific users” with “Show replies” checked.

Setting up
You can set up antenna by going to the More! section on your sidebar, and selecting Antennas. Press Add + to create your first. This is where you can also manage & edit previously created antennas.

Images:

  1. Where to find More! on the sidebar (highlighted)
  2. Where to find Antennas in the More! menu (highlighted)
  3. My antennas page showing Add + button and my previously created antennas.
4 & 5) When you click Add + you get this page to set up your antenna. I've set one up as my Calckey antenna and another to alert me when PastaThief posts. There's a lot to go through here. Expect a separate post sometime soon.
6 & 7) What those antenna feeds look like.
  4. On our progressive web app you can access your antennas by selecting the UFO in the top right corner.
  5. Clicking on the UFO button brings up all my antennas and the link to manage/edit them

I plan on writing up a fuller explanation soon, but happy in the meantime to help anyone wanting to set them up.

90 years ago, four months after taking power, the Nazis targeted this groundbreaking institute that researched gender & sexuality. They ransacked and looted its contents, which became part of the book burnings of May 10.

Dora Richter, the first known person to undergo complete male-to-female gender reassignment surgery, was either killed in this attack or was arrested and died in custody.

Tbh, I'm on a proactively moderated server that has preemptively kept a lot of the worst folks from being able to reach us queers here, and the feedback from a handful of black users here is that #blahajzone has also been generally been harassment free in comparison to other servers they've been on.

Imo, it's actually not to hard as a queer or trans person to find #servers on the #fediverse that will protect you from harassment, but that it is harder to find servers that will also protect indigenous, black, Asian users from racist harassment. And too many queer white folks get a free pass for ignorance tbh, a privilege that many of us have had for far too long.

It's much the same on #Bluesky where I haven't been harassed for being #queer and trans - again there's large communities and plenty of allies - but anti-black racism has been in the spotlight again recently and the devs called out for lagging behind on safety and moderation features that bigots exploit for harassment campaigns.

Far too many fediverse projects are led by men, mostly white men, who are lionised, promoted and financed by another layer of mostly white men. They ultimately get the veto on minority protections.

Some thoughts about of federated-with instances. 🧵 1/2

  1. Conflating any ill will you have with Supernovae at , with the issue of search indexing on the Fediverse to justify your fediblock won't help resolve the issues around search.

  2. It isn't global search. While we shout, lock down, and don't participate in building the additions to our protocols that the needs, we've been letting index the Fediverse. It's already searchable and Google's new Perspectives tab is going to make it even easier. Maybe we could fight that rather than keep thinking it doesn't exist and continuing to write ineffective Facebook-viral style "I do not give permission..." copypasta?

  3. The does not respect your do-not-index-my-posts flag. It never has. It can't. It's not supported by the API, as @supakaity explains, and nor is it supported at level and will need to be added into a new AP protocol.

Every instance server from the (, ), (), and (, ) lineages has full search of federated-with instances as default. All these services actually pre-date the creation of Mastodon in 2016 you can read @Polychrome 's post for their commentary on such. Fediblock all of them to create your very own or you could become part of building a better, safer, Fediverse? Perhaps through participating in the Fediverse Enhancement Proposals?

A beautiful vision of the #Fediverse

I know we all dream of having all our friends and family on the Fediverse so we can avoid proprietary networks completely. But the Fediverse is not looking for market dominance or profit. The Fediverse is not looking for growth. It is offering a place for freedom. People joining the Fediverse are those looking for freedom. If people are not ready or are not looking for freedom, that’s fine. They have the right to stay on proprietary platforms. We should not force them into the Fediverse. We should not try to include as many people as we can at all cost. We should be honest and ensure people join the Fediverse because they share some of the values behind it.

By competing against Meta in the brainless growth-at-all-cost ideology, we are certain to lose. They are the master of that game. They are trying to bring everyone in their field, to make people compete against them using the weapons they are selling.

Fediverse can only win by keeping its ground, by speaking about freedom, morals, ethics, values. By starting open, non-commercial and non-spied discussions. By acknowledging that the goal is not to win. Not to embrace. The goal is to stay a tool. A tool dedicated to offer a place of freedom for connected human beings. Something that no commercial entity will ever offer.

It's interesting sitting here on an old version of seeing someone on server telling their fellow user that posting to unlisted will opt-out of when I can see Unlisted posts in my antennas quite easily though I believe this has been rightly rectified in the newest versions of [ / but need to confirm]. Being hidden from the Explore tab on Mastodon is not the same as being unsearchable across the fediverse. Frankly, there's little understanding even among admins across the about what's a Mastodon / Mastodon API function that is federated to other Mastodon servers but doesn't translate well outside of Mastodon on other connected platforms like and it's forks, and , or rapidly growing platforms like and . Kbin also scrapes posts from across the fediverse and puts them into its own magazines.

Unfortunately simple, up-to-date documentation doesn't really exist to explain the realities of federation vs what your admin said was the reality. AP was not built with privacy in mind, and 'security through obscurity' was mostly a Mastodon thing from when folks thought either the Mastoverse was almost the dark web, or the whole fediverse [which has never been the case], and Google et al weren't interested in scraping it.

Unfortunately we have a cadre of devs across all fedi platforms who'll give glowing lip-service to both the fedi and ActivityPub histories of being built by queer or other minority identities but still won't work on giving folks the granular and controls that weren't included in those protocols, and whose feature roadmaps now just look like bird site 2.0 funded by the milquetoast liberals in political tech who provide their seed money.

Beyond Mastodon and GoToSocial, every other fediverse project treats posting to public as opting in to search and indexing. Indeed, this is pretty much how the ActivityPub protocol handles such too.

jo, (edited ) to mastodon

Folks should take a look at the #fullTextsearch function that Eugen is proposing for #Mastodon and how closely it resembles the #search patch of the woman who he kicked off the Mastodon repo GitHub & Discord a couple of months ago. Also, her patch was more configurable that the thing he's bringing to main that has zero attribution of her work. #fediverse #mastodev #MastoDevs

The first wave of EEE isn't #Meta coming to the #Fediverse , it's already here in the group of incubator bros that are behind some of your favourite devs who think of themselves as the fedi's key stakeholders. At least two are also in the mainstream political tech space. We're just a proving ground and real estate for a bunch of political centrists with money, and those admins who are now being less obtuse about their desire to get their cut. 🤮

It's kind of both equally sad and equally hilarious to see some folks in the raging about Universeodon are genuinely shook to suddenly discover that the wider has had federated available for years.

When you get told that Mastodon=Fediverse and that its culture and capabilities are those of the wider Fediverse, well this is the ignorance you can expect. Many of the same folks screaming about indexing, and pushing the fediblock, still have not offered any solutions to Google already indexing everything - much wider scope than , or those of use on , , , etc, can achieve and it's searchable from the public web.

Tina Turner was mighty.
She was the first woman and Black person to appear on the cover of Rolling Stone. Queers loved her for giving a 🖕 to a misogynist music industry and her abusive husband. She was close friends with other icons like Cher and Bowie. She performed at the opening of the first Gay Games and spoke out for people living with HIV at a time when it could kill your career. Drag queens emulated her style and sang her songs. Modern queer icons do too.

She was everything that today's reactionary fuck-knuckles aren't. Cope and seethe.

Rest in power, Queen.

I don't mind #Firefish as the new name for #Calckey - but I have to say that when I first read it I thought of #Firefox - as many in this Lemmy thread have - and seeing the new logo & colour I can't help but wonder if Mozilla will push back as part of their active protection of their trademark, a point @leigh makes. https://beehaw.org/post/6709040

jo, to fediverse

I have been seeing lots of talk about #Firefish and the "dumpster fire" that FF social has devolved into. I have a lot of sympathy for the dev team finding as we have here at blahaj.zone that FF/IS doesn't scale well. The devolution has been more public over at FF social cos Fedi's own Guy Kawasaki was hyping it up and was part of the team until it wasn't producing the results he expected and he slinked off. I wonder if the seed funders have done the same. Chris and Kainoa had separate funders, both involved in political tech. I think they were hoping to throw some seed money at something that wouldn't drag the chain like Mastodon development and be the new Twttr for liberal politics to electioneer on. 🤮 Kainoa told me who his funder was and from that point I haven't promoted Calckey/Firefish since.

Gotta love the "but we're the good guys" tech VC people, male, white, older, cishet, been "around" social tech for a while, looking to ride this Fedi thing into "significance"/"success", who found their side project who they fed "advice" to without any real stakes/responsibility. And when Kainoa wasn't the 10x dev they hoped, they've jumped ship, not that they could do any better.

It would be nice for the sake of transparency that there was some kind of repository where such funding was disclosed. Ironic when one of the funders is about protecting democracy.

So maybe instead of more forks that focus on rolling out new features, could the devs of Foundkey, , , et al work on your architecture so that even a relatively small (in comparison to some of the Misskey and Mastodon servers) 1500 user server, let alone a 4000 user one can function without falling over, suffering extended timeouts, having server costs blow out thanks to database performance issues, and then decimate it's community when folks are forced to migrate, and then those folks struggle to get their data exported.

So much front end work and not enough backend is the present legacy of the pre-Misskey v 13 forks.

jo, to random

Waves in knowledgeable sympathy from blahaj.zone where we suffer the same with Iceshrimp, and Calckey before hand. Cannot wait to be using Misskey 13 soft fork Sharkey knowing we're still going to be close to original, who rewrote their backend completely when they had a massive influx on their flagship servers [and left behind the version that Foundkey, Calckey/ Firefish, and Iceshrimp all suffer performance issues at scale on]

This time tomorrow a friend and I will be checking into our accommodation for the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade.

We're marching with Trans Pride Australia. We're float number 5 this year, so shouldn't be a chore to spot us!

Among the things that TPA runs is Friday Night Social, a weekly video chat with participants from across Australia. It's overseen & hosted by blahaj zone's admins @ada & @supakaity . I'm also a regular host, and some of our BZ🦈 community are regular participants.

The parade is being televised in Australia on ABCTV and ABC iview (you can watch from overseas through a IPTV service or use a VPN to access iview). The coverage starts at 7:30pm AEDT [Saturday 8:30am London, 12:30am San Fran, 3:30am NYC].

Go to https://iview.abc.net.au/ to watch the Sydney Gay And Lesbian Mardi Gras 2024 in iview (you'll need to register).
