I've got my #Inkscape #cmyk #cairo proof of concept put together.

I'd be interested in your thoughts @ScruffyDux and @zemarmot

It might be possible to duplicate this technique for librsvg too. Depends if it works 😅

Someone said it's important say this publicly in the US: so I will. (And I think each of us should, online and to friends)

This November I will vote for Biden.

I would regard not voting for Biden, particularly in: PA, OH, MI, WI, IN, IL,VA, GA, FL, AZ, ME, NC, NH, etc. as a huge error. I'd be disappointed to find out anyone I knew didn't vote. It's one of a long list of things we need to do. We can't skip it.

And still? We deserve better choices, and in the future we shall have them.

As it ever was.

We focused on certain things and they got better, we ignored certain things and they got worse.

Anyone who tells you it's just one more fight for utopia is a liar. It's an endless push for reform that we must pace ourselves for. Be alert but not afraid.

Don't panic

I just fell down a phronix rabbid hole with some pretty nasty pieces of work claiming all the problems of the world are due to the existence of codes of conduct, outreachy, and people's basic humanity getting in the way of programming. In this case Gnome, but it didn't really matter to them what person or organisation had betrayed their view that racism would disappear if we'd let everyone be racist.

I think I need a bath now. So gross.

I miss the days when Ubuntu was inspiring, an ideal to aspire to. We need a new distro that captures the essence of this again.

doctormo,

Know any bajillionairs who've just had life changing space trips?

Ubuntu didn't make money for pretty much all of it's existence. All that hope came out of having the resources to put into actions and pay people for their labour. This spurred on other people who contributed on top of that

But that way of funding things isn't sustainable

We have to grow Free Software Desktops as an Industry. How can we make software in a just and fair way, and how can we make more of it tomorrow?

I have a weird fascination with HOA’s, they seem like such a weird thing to me. I have never lived anywhere where there is an HOA and never would but I enjoy hearing stories about them. Are you guys pro or anti HOA’s? Or no opinion? Any good stories?

They are the teenagers of political organisation.

Moody, self important, secretive and insecure.

It's instructive watching HOAs because it reveals just how much a skill politics really is.

"they are going to use your data anyway."

Just because someone wants, and may be able to steal your data, is no reason to give or sell it, or even condone the theft.

Even if, and especially if, it's for AI.

Some people just really annoy me with how circular their logic is, trying to convince themselves that data abuse is totally cool.

"Why do YOU have to make this SO hard!!"

I admit I lost it and couldn't stop laughing. 🤣

If this is how we make grey beards support codes of conduct and treat women and vulnerable groups with respect in Free Software projects,

then for the love of society! drop the culture of macho aggressions. It's not "nerd critique", it's a security vector.

Looks like another successful for with a whole bunch of both gov and charity causes pitching their ideas alongside music, games, food and plenty of nicks and nacks.

The real success is seeing RBCs (roving bands of children) just enjoying the street. More of this!

@koen@procolix.social avatar

Let's have a short discussion on 'when will you follow someone' on the especially when it comes to and

There is a catch22 situation here, where politicians and people of the press say 'we are not going to use the Fediverse, since we cannot get enough reach there' and people here on the Fediverse say 'we will only follow people who are actually active here'.

I think that if we really want to make the Fediverse a place where we can find all the news and all the political activity we should take action to overcome this catch22 situation: if there is an official account of a politicion or a press-outlet, even if they are not (very) active: follow them!

It does not hurt you (if there is no posts, then there is also nothing to not like) and it will give them the chance to see that there is an active audience here that is worth spending time on.

Oh, and when they do get active: treat them like you want to be treated, welcome them with a warm heart and encourage them to be even more active.

doctormo,
@doctormo@floss.social avatar

@koen

There are plenty of people who reflexively punish people for not behaving. You see it in these replies with well meaning people very quick to throw away every social connection in the name of enforcement.

More than HOA enforcement, we need grace and patience.

Also science. Can't stress enough how dumb every one of our individual actions are when we check what the collective result of those behaviours are.

I just heard the bad news that I am probably going to need a new job starting in July.

So, before beginning the regular search, I wanted to ask my Fedi friends if anyone could use a capable C++ programmer with lots of graphics and networking experience. I wouldn't mind a change, so I'm open to anything. Even other programming languages! It would be awesome if I could use Linux to do the work. 🐧

Locations I would consider are: Central Europe, Melbourne, Sydney or Remote

🔁 Boost appreciated! 🙏

doctormo,
@doctormo@floss.social avatar

@fell

Could use your skills on Inkscape (C++, graphics). Though, you're looking for paid work, and we're not there yet with funding models.

One day though I hope to be able to offer folks actual jobs 😅

Good luck with the search!

so who's idea was it exactly to make a US-based mastodon non-profit and bring in a bunch of vulture capitalists and "AI" tech bros to "help" grow the ecosystem

doctormo,
@doctormo@floss.social avatar

@eniko you don't seem to have much faith in the fediverse or open source system.

Who cares what these guys do or do not do. It doesn't actually matter at all.

I'd say that these types of messages are more damaging at this point since it shows we don't trust the systems and regulations that we set up for ourselves.

doctormo,
@doctormo@floss.social avatar

@rysiek @eniko

Yes, but the US board doesn't matter.

It's not functionally a dependency on anything.

And if our systems really do depend on hyper-vigilance then we may have more structural problems. And anxiety problems.

I hate VCs, I dislike AI hype. I have zero trust in any of these guys. But I rather hoped we'd gotten to the point of not needing to trust them at all.

It's St. George's Day today. Though I have no idea why we English would want to celebrate this day. To what should I owe a foreign slayer of mythical beasts who never even knew England existed?

May 25th is St. Bede's day. If we must have a patron saint for our country. Let's pick one that was actually English, and actually interesting.

Aye, St. Reinvention of the pantheon. Different sky daddy, same need for collectable trading cards available at all good pilgrimage stores today!

And then what, it's a flag, a social mustering of performative social standardisation wrapped up as pride in a pretend history.

If we must. And we might. Then let us have some fun with it.

Image encoding × FOSS desktop nerds, I have a question…

The current format for dynamic/dark-style wallpapers in GNOME is not great. I don’t think anyone—including distros, designers, & maintainers—likes how it works: it’s a legacy system of GSettings keys and an XML format that sets those keys but is not biderectional; choosing that XML file in Settings sets the individual GSettings manually, making it hard to show the pair of wallpapers as selected.

So let’s do better?

#GNOME #Linux #FOSS

doctormo,
@doctormo@floss.social avatar

@cassidy

Just use an svg. You can pack as many rasters as you like and can encode whatever extra information you need into the xml.

You can also lay over some other elements. Like clocks.
