For the past 10+ years, I was unable to daily-drive the #Wayland version of #GNOME
…until version 45.2+, where performance improvements landed for my specific usecases.

Since then, for the past 6 months, I've been running 45.x on Wayland.

This week, when I went back to the Xorg/X11 version for 1-2 days, I was surprised to see it now feels unbearable to me from a performance standpoint! Even with animations disabled.

I guess I can't go back after having used a no-delays no-jank version 🤷

A screenshot of a portion of an app. It shows two toggles. One of them has the classic libadwaita blue. The other one has a purple. In the foreground there's the GTK inspector, with the CSS panel open. It shows a CSS variable with the name @purple_3

Hi @ebassi , we discuss here an issue with #GnomeWeather. I added you, because you might know why the regression exists. There are many locations missing in #Gnome #Weather with version >= 41. Before, the locations were there and worked fine. Even larger German cities are not anymore available.

Related bug:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-weather/-/issues/234

I wonder whether this cannot be easily fixed, because, for example, the extension #OpenWeatherRefined finds many more locations

I installed to hunker down and "get stuff done" as I was before using , but now that I'm using gnome, some things work nicer and easier, but overall I think I may go back to .

This probably isn't possible but I thought I'd throw it out there.

I just happen to have installed from scratch and used . And I have no interest in using Gnome for anything, I don't like it. BUT, the trackpad handling is excellent! Gestures, and the scrolling, it's great. I can't seem to find a way to pull whatever handles the mouse handling out of Gnome and use it within my own Window manager. I probably don't understand the layers of Gnome, and that's fine. But I sure wish I could have just that functionality. For years, I've had janky trackpad handling on Linux because I thought it was as good as it could get.

And of course, thank you to the free & open source projects & communities of Linux, Debian, and GNOME for many of the improvements we’re shipping in Endless OS 6. We strongly believe in open source, and would not be able to have the impact we do without standing on the shoulders of the projects we build upon. 🧡

I'm having a hell of a day with Firefox today (and part of yesterday). Since 126.0 was released many websites make Firefox crash (for example opening images here in Mastodon but also a Grafana dashboard and others). All in Gnome with Wayland and Ubuntu 24.04. Are other people having the same issues?

plaimbock,
@plaimbock@fosstodon.org avatar

@adelgado I've had no problems with #Firefox 126.0 but I'm on #Fedora 40 with #GNOME & #Wayland. IIRC this can happen when you did not close all instances of Firefox $previous_version. Try closing all Firefox windows and also make sure that there are no lingering instances ($ ps ax | grep firefox). Then start Firefox again and see if that helps.

I really feel like Linux distros should come with ddcutil preinstalled, and Gnome should build in some sort of functionality to control it, like this: https://github.com/daitj/gnome-display-brightness-ddcutil

Isn't having an external monitor really common? And when all laptops come with dedicated buttons for changing the display brightness, doesn't that suggest that people like to be able to easily adjust the screen brightness? Then why wouldn't we want to do it also on external screens?

If you're a developer, you'll find Text Pieces useful. The same is true for anyone who finds themselves needing to encode, decode or convert snippets of text between different formats. The app comes with lots of powerful text transformation actions, and even lets you define your own. Let it remove any duplicate lines or give it the functionality to change all your tabs to spaces. Text Pieces can do anything!

You can get the app on Flathub here: https://flathub.org/apps/io.gitlab.liferooter.TextPieces

Very happy and proud of this collaboration between @codethink @gnome and @sovtechfund

https://www.codethink.co.uk/articles/2024/GNOME-OS-systemd-sysupdate/

Our goal is to make GNOME OS a daily driver for QA and finalize the migration, but this work will be fundamental to the future of all secure image based / immutable Linux distributions.

I think it’s time for a proper #introduction.

Hey, I am Jan, I am 22 years old and moved from another instance.

I love to play the bass and skateboard, when the weather allows for it.
My favorite songs are ICE579 by Temmis, Edward 40Hands by Mom Jeans. and Wellblech by Nils Keppel.

Like many others on this instance, I am a programmer. I have an interest in #Swift and #Golang development on Linux and I am trying to get more active in the #GNOME community.

Looking forward to meeting you all 🫶

janvhs,
@janvhs@hachyderm.io avatar

Wow a lot has changed, so it’s time for a #reintroduction.

Still Jan, but I’m 23 years old by now <3

Nowadays, I’m primarily a bassist and play in a local band. However, I play electric guitar and sing, too.
I’m in love with indie rock and synthy pop. I love Temmis and Mia Morgan, but enjoy Queen, Margarita Quebrada and re6ce as well.

Prada Shoes by re6ce might be my favourite song, atm.

I’m now working at #SUSE, which introduced me to #Elixir. Furthermore, I love #GNOME and my #MacBook.
