Why do I still have the longing to pick up a pizza and rent some videos from a Blockbuster?

doctorLURK,
@doctorLURK@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr oh wow, not at all? We hardly went until I was a tween (read: until my folks bought their house), but after that, we went a few times a year.

Though now that I think about it... yeah, most of the time, it was the video store or bupkis, wasn't it?

Ha, this exchange reminded me that the summer after I graduated high school, I had all my friends over for a night and we rented like 5 movies and just put them on one after another while we did stuff. Good times.

What kind of high-school experience did you have? Were you in a clique? Were you popular, unpopular, the coolest kid in your Homeschool? Did you have a sweet jean jacket with patches, or maybe a leather vest? Were you an evil villain or a Mary Sue?

doctorLURK,
@doctorLURK@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr I was a "sit behind the bleachers at every pep rally" type - not smoking in the boys' room, just uninterested. I had two basic groups of friends: a lovely group of geeks with whom I played Magic: the Gathering, and a group of skaters/stoners/punks/burnouts with whom I lightly terrorized the area by driving around into the wee hours, swapping lawn ornaments between front yards and chucking firecrackers into the bowl of a half finished skate park. I wasn't "popular," but I had friends!

Where do you live and how do you feel about it?

Obviously, don't tell me exactly where you live, no actual addresses please! You can be as vague as you like.

I live in Central Missouri in the U.S.

Pros:

This is an absolutely beautiful place, green rolling hills, lots of rivers, lakes, ponds, and natural springs, cool caves to explore.

Lots of farming here, so great access to quality fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, and dairy.

It's relatively inexpensive to live here compared with other states, because it's a "flyover".

I'm close enough to three major cities, that it's an easy day trip, and I'm about halfway to anywhere in the U.S.

We have one of the best Conservation departments in the U.S. and this is one of the few things that is a bipartisan issue. Lots of awesome nature programs that are free or cheap, state parks, conservation areas, bird watching, hunting, boating, foraging available to everyone.

Cons:

Yeah, it's a big one, it is a RED STATE, while a lot of the cities are blue, there is a large rural population, that votes red. Abortion is not legal here. People often vote against their own self interest.

While I'm not against responsible gun ownership, lots of people aren't responsible, and people have access to guns that definitely should not.

We have very few employee protections here, while the cost of living is relatively low compared with other places, it's taken years to get to a $12 minimum wage, and it's still not enough.

doctorLURK,
@doctorLURK@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr oh, are you in Columbia? My spouse (from St. Joe) went to college there, at Mizzou! Small world.

I'm from Portland, OR. Pros: relaxed vibes, good weather, tons of cool and pretty things to do/see, there's some serious efforts to recognize and address our city's racist past (and present), and to really celebrate all the different backgrounds and ethnicities that live here. Cons: the PPB are monstrous; city leadership has been crap for several years. Loud street racing on the eastside.

@RickiTarr yeah, sometimes I forget not everyone travels incognito online the way I do. No offense meant.

I don't know! We have a raceway RIGHT IN TOWN, too - and it's not that far (~2 hours) to reach long, mostly empty desert roads on the far side of the Cascades - but nope: it's gotta be cruddy little import tuners scrambling up and down I-205 from 10:30 PM to about 6:30 AM, every night. Like, my dudes, internal combustion engines aren't hot news anymore. No one is impressed you own one!

@RickiTarr Aside from the stupidly obvious tracks like Hotei's "Battle Without Honor or Humanity" (you know it even if you don't know the name: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVNMZA6lbT8 ), a personal favorite is Motörhead's "Stay Clean:" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5j1ZSgPtaaQ .

Specifically for starting housework, though, there's a newer Pitbull and Li'l Jon dance track called "JUMPIN" that heavily samples House of Pain's "Jump Around" and it's just too fun. I can't not move to it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXt65SavWkc

Instead of complaining about new slang, be proud that this generation isn't using gay or tr*nnie as an insult like past generations have.

doctorLURK,
@doctorLURK@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr heck, I still remember this, though I sometimes wish I didn't, just so I could pretend I was better:

  • not hearing much about queer people until age 13
  • getting a peer lesson that "gay" and related terms were devastating insults, and flexing my newly-acquired "bad words"
  • finally getting pushback from someone as a HS freshman, realizing what I'd been doing, and making the choice to stop.

I get why we'd rather forget stuff like that; it's unpleasant. But it's important too!

@RickiTarr Ice-T friends!

Color photo of a green skinned alien with an enormous bald head, sitting on the ledge of a flat rooftop, dressed in cowboy clothes. It's holding a white cowboy hat out as if waving. It appears to be a sculpture, not a computer graphic or person in a suit. In small letters next to its head, it's been captioned "ayy lmao".
Ancient doctored image of the old Fox News show "The O'Reilly Factor" in which the speaker's head has been replaced with a happy looking white owl's head (the "o rly" owl, for those who remember). The text has been altered as follows: the name has been changed to "The O'RLY Factor," and the speaker is titled "O RLY?". Under a side header titled "Taking Points" is the text "Losing the Culture War," but the text below that reads "But I alweysd win at parchesey LOL". The news ticker at the bottom reads "Reuters: George W. Bush: 'UALUEALUEALEUALE'"
A four panel meme showing an increasingly powerful brain at each level, with text on the left. The text of each box is a movie title plus the year it came out. The top quadrant shows a shrunken brain in an X-ray of a human skull, and the accompanying text reads "Thirteen (2003)". The next quadrant shows a full sized brain in a skull, lit up all over to indicate mental activity. The accompanying text reads "Ghost (1990)". The third quadrant shows a brain in a skull, but this time the brain is glowing so brightly it's lighting the area outside the skull. The accompanying text reads "Thirteen Ghosts (1960)". (because the '90s remake is crap.) The final quadrant shows a brain radiating lines of blue energy out into the world from all angles. The accompanying text reads "The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo (1985)".

Who is the best Batman villain and why?

doctorLURK,
@doctorLURK@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr I mean the critical consensus is the Joker, and I can definitely get behind that. But my personal favorite is Two-Face. Harvey Dent seems to represent both sides of the Batman/Joker coin, always in mid-flip. He's unpredictable far beyond other villains because he may end up not doing anything bad at all, and he's constantly struggling with his darker side (until it takes over). He's like a walking microcosm of the whole Batman universe, but with a heaping helping of extra pathos.

I'm a cantankerous, self-doubting 41-year-old cishet (m) digital marketer/digital marketing skeptic. If you follow me, expect only occasional posting. Favorite things to post about:

#jokes (dumb, absurd, and/or mildly inappropriate)
#magic (the gathering)
#DeepThoughts (with or without Jack Handey)

I've also been a (non-exclusionary!) nerd all my life, but I'm not really interested in competitive fandoms.

@Jaden3 Innervisions is an all-timer! "Visions" into "Living For the City" knocks me flat.

Personally I couldn't pick a permanent fave, but at the moment (and for several years now) it's probably Joanna Newsom's third album, Have One On Me. Someday, it'll be a different album. Always fun to think about!

Periodic reminder: If you oppose DRM, the way to show it is to popularize media published without it! I've gotten quite into audioshows like Wolf359, Magus Elgar, The Red Panda Adventures, & The Magnus Archives! And so much more!

Also there's webcomics like Pepper&Carrot or Lackadaisy. Or shorts like Blender's!

Enjoying "popculture" legitimately is miscounted by politicians (& e.g. W3C) as support for DRM, whilst "piracy" is miscounted as justification.

doctorLURK,

@alcinnz just popping in to say that I listened to the original run of Wolf 359 several years ago and absolutely loved it. The first few episodes aren't that good, but they get better (and longer) as they go; by the time they released episode 9 or so, I was totally hooked. It's cool to see it come up again on my timeline in 2024! (...assuming you aren't talking about something else 😅)

family: in case you haven't heard, there's a brief but severe watch for our area from Friday afternoon (January 12th) through Saturday night. Expect overnight lows around 11° Fahrenheit, with a Saturday high between 20-25°, wind gusts of up to 45 miles per hour, and up to 8 inches of snow. In that probably means power outages, too, and some equipment (like heat pumps) may not operate well in the cold. Please prepare so you can safely endure this. Stay warm! Good luck!

PSA: If you enjoy old school #roguelike games in the vein of #Nethack, and you've been wanting a mobile option, try Pathos, a.k.a. #PathosNethackCodex. It's free and ad free, developed by a single programmer (Callan Hodgskin), and features a few different 'codices' (gameplay modes), though I find the classic Nethack version to be the most enjoyable. Excellent touch controls, simplified gameplay that retains plenty of challenge, and 4 tilesets. Android, iOS, Linux & more!

Just spent like 6 minutes grappling with a busted ReCaptcha test that kept asking me to try again no matter how many times I correctly selected images... All just to try and say a simple "thanks" to a former illustrator of paperback #SFF for the art she made. Eventually I had to give up. A shame that I can't even send someone a nice note because of outdated anti spam tech.

Anyway, to Victoria Poyser Lisi: Wherever you are, I'm grateful for your art... but I despise your website. #bookstodon
