@kevinteljeur@mastodon.online

Dublin 15, Ireland. Nobody wants to read what I write once they’ve read what I’ve written. I assuredly will write it. I also post occasionally about coding, bird-feeding, photos of things, cycling, and drawing (once in a while).

I architect and develop web systems to move data for a very big non-commercial organisation. I'd love to make something that improves the world for everyone though. Maybe one day?

The kid had us watching ‘Next Goal Wins’ last night, a 2023 Taika Waititi soccer movie that’s simultaneously a funny underdog sports movie that’s also about trans acceptance and inclusivity. It’s a bit weak, very Waititi, and Fassbender… is good but can’t do accents? So, a comedy with a message.

kevinteljeur,
@kevinteljeur@mastodon.online avatar

Because Waititi co-wrote it, several key characters sound like they’re off the set of ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ and it feels like if Pacific Islanders were to watch it, they’d probably find it deeply patronising.

Sold the kid’s bike, it was painless (after a slow start, a low-key bidding war broke out and I sold to a reasonable bidder who collected almost immediately. Frog Bikes are highly desirable and hard to come by (Brexit). I could have waited to see if they met or surpassed asking, but this was good.

kevinteljeur,
@kevinteljeur@mastodon.online avatar

I think I’m actually quite good at selling things (the good photos, the detailed information, judging the pricing) but I hate doing it. Maybe if I revelled in my success more I could get into it. A lot of people selling stuff are actually not very good at it.

I was just thinking that it’s weird and also depressing that Trump will be the President of the USA again, possibly for quite a while. Avoidable and yet inevitable.

a confession: I’ve battled mourning doves for months, ever since I bought a bird feeder for my garden and they kept draining it in less than a day.

they are allegedly stupid creatures, but that’s just what they want us to think.

I am plausibly an expert in cyber defense, having written a book and academic papers, lectured at federal agencies and F500s alike — yet the doves thwart my every mitigation.

I planned to write a blog post once I won, but my hope for victory further desiccates daily…

kevinteljeur,
@kevinteljeur@mastodon.online avatar

@shortridge I had this with Eurasian Magpies, which are smart enough to, for example, wind string around a perch to pull up a feeder, or to rock a feeder, grab a perch, and hook the perch on something to stop it moving (I had to put my feeders in a big cage). And then empty it in minutes. They used to come into the kitchen to check out what I was making when my back was turned.

Those little brains are really amazing.

kevinteljeur,
@kevinteljeur@mastodon.online avatar

@shortridge Yes, I had to build a big cage with 50mm mesh so only anything the size of a Eurasian Starling or smaller can get in to the feeders, and you can guess why. They still figure out how to steal stuff. First cleverness, then violence; just like humans. It’s amazing watching the big crows do it, it’s like solving a puzzle.

kevinteljeur,
@kevinteljeur@mastodon.online avatar

@shortridge Starlings are fairly stupid, actually.

On the BBC’s new ‘Famous Five’ series, and how George might originally have been effectively trans. I'm straying out of my lane a bit here (sorry), and The Mary Sue is never shy of hyperbole, but it might interest some of you (I didn't know a lot of this): https://www.themarysue.com/bbcs-famous-five-controversy-explained/

Google maps included this as a cycle route to Connolly Hospital with my son. Across lanes of dual carriageway just as they enter a motorway. There is of course another route for pedestrians and cyclists that passes under all this.
Google Maps is awful

@ronanmcd I’ve only just seen this. What was the recommended route?

kevinteljeur,
@kevinteljeur@mastodon.online avatar

@ronanmcd Ha, you were minutes away from my place. That’s not the worst route, although I don’t take it either. You did get me thinking about trying it when I’m allowed back on the bike and see how it compares. It’s arguably as safe, but not as pleasant.

I just saw an advert for boiling water from your kitchen tap. Are people insane?

kevinteljeur,
@kevinteljeur@mastodon.online avatar

@ronanmcd Might be something to it. Heating the water on demand might be more efficient than, say, boiling a minimum amount of water in a kettle (a notoriously inefficient device).

kevinteljeur,
@kevinteljeur@mastodon.online avatar

@ronanmcd Good point! Also, there’s a video (The Verge, I think) comparing the energetic efficiency of different methods of heating water. I doubt that this is up there with the best, but we’ll see.
