Seriously heard someone saying they don't listen to many black artists, because they aren't really into rap. Bitch please, feel free to share songs from Black artists from any genre. Here is one of my favorites, if you like this song please check out her other work:

@RickiTarr one of the most interesting and envelope-pushing pieces of "pop" music I've heard in the last 5 years is Lonely World by Moses Sumney. Listen to the entire thing; it goes places.

Where do you live and how do you feel about it?

Obviously, don't tell me exactly where you live, no actual addresses please! You can be as vague as you like.

I live in Central Missouri in the U.S.

Pros:

This is an absolutely beautiful place, green rolling hills, lots of rivers, lakes, ponds, and natural springs, cool caves to explore.

Lots of farming here, so great access to quality fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, and dairy.

It's relatively inexpensive to live here compared with other states, because it's a "flyover".

I'm close enough to three major cities, that it's an easy day trip, and I'm about halfway to anywhere in the U.S.

We have one of the best Conservation departments in the U.S. and this is one of the few things that is a bipartisan issue. Lots of awesome nature programs that are free or cheap, state parks, conservation areas, bird watching, hunting, boating, foraging available to everyone.

Cons:

Yeah, it's a big one, it is a RED STATE, while a lot of the cities are blue, there is a large rural population, that votes red. Abortion is not legal here. People often vote against their own self interest.

While I'm not against responsible gun ownership, lots of people aren't responsible, and people have access to guns that definitely should not.

We have very few employee protections here, while the cost of living is relatively low compared with other places, it's taken years to get to a $12 minimum wage, and it's still not enough.

@RickiTarr yeah, sometimes I forget not everyone travels incognito online the way I do. No offense meant.

I don't know! We have a raceway RIGHT IN TOWN, too - and it's not that far (~2 hours) to reach long, mostly empty desert roads on the far side of the Cascades - but nope: it's gotta be cruddy little import tuners scrambling up and down I-205 from 10:30 PM to about 6:30 AM, every night. Like, my dudes, internal combustion engines aren't hot news anymore. No one is impressed you own one!

doctorLURK,
@doctorLURK@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr oh, are you in Columbia? My spouse (from St. Joe) went to college there, at Mizzou! Small world.

I'm from Portland, OR. Pros: relaxed vibes, good weather, tons of cool and pretty things to do/see, there's some serious efforts to recognize and address our city's racist past (and present), and to really celebrate all the different backgrounds and ethnicities that live here. Cons: the PPB are monstrous; city leadership has been crap for several years. Loud street racing on the eastside.

FYI, someone just asked me, "Could you please put a CW on those US politics posts?"

I said no sorry,, just mute me.

I don't understand CWing political posts. And that doesn't mean you need to @ me explaining why. I know THEIR reasons, I just disagree with them and won't do it.

I respect CWs for other things, but not politics. Politics is news and people need to be aware of what's happening. It's not gory or violent, it's politics.

Kthxbye.

doctorLURK,
@doctorLURK@mastodon.social avatar

@GottaLaff thanks for clarifying! I think everyone's entitled to their own approach to this. I agree that if someone does it differently than you, it can be unreasonable for them to be angry about your choice. I also get the exhaustion, and why people (especially outside the US) want to see less of this. Personally, I use a filter to hide (and sometimes completely remove) political content that stresses me out; I think most people would like this solution too if they knew how to fine-tune it.

@glynmoody I'm certainly willing to learn more about their pollution savings vs. traditionally made cheeses and see how that stacks up against the extra energy consumption of their model. It could be a net benefit! But in any case, I'd still like to know.

doctorLURK,
@doctorLURK@mastodon.social avatar

@glynmoody I was really interested in this, as a diet-unrestricted person who enjoys tasty food no matter where it's sourced from (and a longtime blue cheese aficionado). And I'm still interested! But I have to admit I'm unimpressed by how "all in" the company seems to be on "AI" machine learning. Feels to me like it's in direct opposition to the environmental benefits of plant based food. But maybe their model is less energy intensive? Guess I'll have to learn a little more before I try.

Hey kids, if you want to hear how great recorded music used to sound before the loudness wars won and everything got compressed to shit, listen to an early Eagles album like "One Of These Nights."

I mean, DAMN, it sounds so rich. So balanced. There's so much space between the instruments. The harmonies are electrifying. It sounds like they're playing together right there in front of you. Incredible.

This has been another installment of Gen X Jason Yells At Cloud. Thank you and goodnight.

I don't know if it'll be around forever, but I do know I'm never going back to just "www dot youtube dot com" for online videos again.

John Steinbeck is awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his novel The Grapes of Wrath.

The book was first published in April 14, 1939. The book won the National Book Award & Pulitzer Prize for fiction, & it was cited prominently when Steinbeck was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962. When preparing to write the novel, Steinbeck wrote: "I want to put a tag of shame on the greedy bastards who are responsible for this [the Great Depression and its effects]."

doctorLURK,

@gutenberg_org one of the greatest works of 20th century American literature, and still a heavy hitter today. We read it in high school but I found the pace too slow, and didn't much more than skim it. Reread a few years later in college and it floored me. Steinbeck paints with a heavy hand, but he does so deliberately, with awareness and purpose.

The Barows and Godwin families were both such interesting factions, and the depictions of courtly intrigue/skullduggery were excellent, especially for the time and medium in question.
