I see a lot of posts on here chiding people for suggesting as a solution to the surveillance capital tool know as .

I understand their point to a point, however, the solution to windows spying is, ultimately, to not use windows.

If you would like to not use windows but don't know where to start, I'd be more than happy to have a chat with you to help get you started on your journey.

It's really not that bad, folks. If you're ready to stop paying hundreds of dollars for the pleasure of having all your data stolen, hit me up, and let's figure something out for you, today!

Ok, this is an extremely niche question, but I'm trying to work with a list of files in a Windows batch script, and one of the files contains two single quotes in the name, so the batch script is interpreting that as a command. Does anyone know of any way I can escape those single quotes programmatically? I can't simply add slashes to them because I don't have access to the filename. Should I pipe them to a text file and then munge the text file? I'm happy to give more information if necessary; this isn't a secret or anything.

P.S. If your suggestion is not to use a batch script to do this, believe me, I've considered it, but at the moment batch is what I've got. I'm not going to install an entirely new shell to do this fairly simple task and I don't like PowerShell enough to go to the trouble of scripting in that. If I were to write a non-shell program, I would probably write it in Python as that seems like the most reasonable option, but I remain convinced that there's a way to do this in a batch script.

Please don't be furious at Microsoft for bundling Recall with Windows. Just ditch the OS now and for good. If you still continue to accept such attitude, problem is really not the evil corporation, but YOU 🤓

Summon the courage and set up Fedora, Ubuntu, Arch or any decent Linux-based OS. Ask folks to help you out with first steps. But you'll be surprised how smooth it is 👍

How does an independent nerd like myself, not a pro business enterprise user, get a Windows 11 Pro license for say .. under $50? Is that possible?

The only thing I found is kinguin.net .. but can I trust that? It looks ... sketchy …

This whole thread about the Recall feature on Copilot PCs is making me anxious about future workplaces that may supply a Recall-capable laptop, and enforcing it/the policy to be enabled.

You should never install personal stuffs on a work PC for privacy reasons, but doesn't this take it to a whole nother level where you couldn't/shouldn't even i.e. reply to personal messages on it cos it's all recorded? 😮‍💨

But meh, fuck employers that'd force you to use a certain OS anyway.

ICQ is closing down. It was really at its height in 2000 and that is when we integrated ICQ into Opera. We made a small (5k) client and it worked really well.

AOL had purchased ICQ and they were concerned about MSN taking users from them by connecting to their service, so they stopped supporting 3rd party clients. We contacted them, to see if they would make an exception for us, but they did not.

They said that if we removed our 5k client, we could maybe discuss bundling their client, but it was bigger than Opera, so that was not going to happen.

My current workflow includes using a #windows Virtual Machine for the sole purpose of running #Microsoft Office and #OneDrive , and this clunky solution is still leagues better than actually running Windows on nearly every measure.

The pain the limited time I spend in that wee VM window underscores how bad Windows has gotten over the years.

The hilarious thing about Microsoft going all in on AI with and , they threw Intel and AMD under the bus. The whole last year of "AI PCs" won't get features like Recall.
The consumer reaction to Recall has been overwhelmingly negative, but all these companies are afraid of shareholders and investors wanting more AI hype to make stock prices look good.
But and have all these chips made that are falling in price fast.
You can find some CRAZY deals on computers right now that WONT run Recall, but are over-kill powerful for home systems.

https://somegadgetguy.com/b/45e

Mini PC's used to sell chips that were two or three years old. This Geekom is using AMD's current laptop chip, with 32GB of RAM, and 2TB of storage for $899!

It's a REAL good time to shop a NON Recall compatible PC.
