Is there any FOSS #FileManager for Windows 10 that isn't super slow and unreliable, has double panels and tabs?
I've tried #Files, #Spacedrive and #DoubleCommander but each of them either can't do basic operations without crashing or requiring me to wait a few seconds.
I thought switching from HDD to M.2 SSD will help - I did not.
#WindowsExplorer sucks - no dual view, no tabs... But all other options fig. make me want to punch the screen.
The newest most powerful chips from Intel and AMD don't qualify for Microsoft's newest CoPilot+ AI branding. We're already seeing INCREDIBLE deals on crazy powerful PCs, because of all the AI hype! Here's my review of the Geekom A8, with a BEAST of an AMD chip inside! https://somegadgetguy.com/b/45e
I am on my Windows computer so much for work that when I get off, I really just want to do something not on a computer. I realize that I now associate Windows with work and it doesn't feel like something fun or enjoyable. It doesn't feel personal to me.
I've been trying to figure out why lately I've had trouble with personal projects and perhaps this might be a small part of the answer.
I updated #calibre (the ebook software) the other day. I don't use its graphical interface, and only have it around for its command line tools. Nevertheless, every time I've opened a text-or-document-adjacent filetype since, #Windows has asked me which app I want to use. It hasn't set my file associations to calibre, just unset all of my existing ones so that I have to answer a pointless prompt multiple times per day. How does this make any sense?
Copy/paste keeping source formatting by default... Seriously, who ever thought this was a good idea and how did this persist so long on so many platforms?
Microsoft's Recall brilliant move is to move the cost of storage and processing of your personal data from their cloud server to your personal computer. You will foot the bill of their tracking.
In the entire history of computing, there has never been a more important time to teach people about #Linux than right now.
(And never a worse time for me not to be doing @Linux4Everyone -- so I hope my fellow YouTube and content creators will double down and show people the light!)
The online backlash to #Windows#Recall amuses me tremendously. I started building a similar open-source (non-AI, local only) thing for #Linux a month ago.
It would take screenshots and create a timeline video of your day. It also enabled searching across your past usage of the computer.
The inspiration was an open-source macOS app called "Rem" which does the same thing.
Ah well, I guess I'll abandon that then, as it's going to be seen as toxic thanks to #Microsoft.
Struggling a bit with the disgusting news about #windows and the #Recall software. I am considering switching to @vanillaos, but it feels like a risk for some reason... Is it worth the trouble of switching?
Folks who might be looking to move from Windows to Linux: another option, if it’s financially feasible for you and you don’t want to mess with installing Linux, is to sell your Windows machine and buy a Linux one.
I am amused. One the one hand, Microsoft is introducing Recall, which literally takes screenshots of everything you do on windows, but on the other hand, they are taking users ability to take screenshots of their browser away if their company configures it as such.
If anyone's switching over to Linux and needs help let me know, I know Several Things™ about it
(Mostly Arch and derivatives but a little bit of other distros too) #windows#recall#linux
Ultimately, when I do purchase a Mac Mini, I have a safety net for being able to experiment with #Linux freely. It's easier to experiment when failure doesn't cause any significant issues in one's life. General anxiety is a struggle of mine, so doing sensible things to mitigate the intensity of anxiety helps me take chances I wouldn't risk ordinarily. The #Windows PC can become my Linux experiment, I can follow the documentation about Linux to increase my comfort levels with Linux.

This tiny PC is now packing the most powerful laptop chip AMD makes!
Funnily enough, Microsoft threw AMD and Intel under the bus.
NONE of the current selling "AI" PCs qualify for the "CoPilot" branding.
Who knows, maybe you don't want that new Microsoft Recall feature on your system anyway?
With more people considering #Linux after the latest #Microsoft#Windows news, here is my advice:
Before looking at Linux at all, determine what proprietary software you're using in your workflows (MS Office and Adobe stuff being big ones) and try FOSS alternatives on Windows. (LibreOffice, OnlyOffice, Krita, GIMP, Inkscape, kdenlive, etc.) This will very much ease any future transition away from Windows. (1/7)
