Ultimately, when I do purchase a Mac Mini, I have a safety net for being able to experiment with freely. It's easier to experiment when failure doesn't cause any significant issues in one's life. General anxiety is a struggle of mine, so doing sensible things to mitigate the intensity of anxiety helps me take chances I wouldn't risk ordinarily. The PC can become my Linux experiment, I can follow the documentation about Linux to increase my comfort levels with Linux.

@Dennis5891 It is cute AF! I didn't realize that Apple was making them too. I have seen Linux and Windows versions of them, but a Mac OS installed on one is surprising! It's just as capable as their other larger computers. At a more affordable pricepoint for entry-level computing.

@Klumpmeister Yeah, it is the safest option for a daily driver, in addition for use as an emulator. Plus, it can easily be worked into an existing setup without having to spend a ton on Apple branded accessories.

@mboelen shrugs I can't quantify it, but something in me hates virtual machines (after using one for weeks). As for a Raspberry Pi, I am worried about building it myself. Plus, I feel Mac OS curious due to my experience with iOS.

In all honestly, I could try again with a virtual machine. It could be the experience has improved enough that I don't dislike it.

@mboelen Having used Android, Linux for a few years, and Windows even longer; the curiosity of what MacOS has to offer is there. Especially since iOS has piqued my interest despite some unpleasant default behaviors for handling Bluetooth and Wi-Fi toggles (easily fixed by creating shortcuts to mimic Android Toggle behavior).

This morning, I talked myself out of installing as I thought of all the scenarios which I would need Windows. It irked me quite a bit, Dual Booting is certainly an option; as I have invested a large chunk of my digital life on Windows, I would spend a lot of time on the Windows partition because so many programs are easier to run on that OS.

Investing in an iMac or Mac Mini would be a safer option. As I wouldn't be using Windows, I could keep access to my iPhone troubleshooting tools.

I'm shocked that an iMac costs less than my Windows PC after tax. I could even come up with the capital to fund that purchase (a small chunk of change from my 401K). Not using Windows is my goal, but I will go about it in a different way, it seems. I do worry about the security of Mac OS, but realistically, I am a pretty safe internet user.

It would be a lie to insinuate that one walled garden is better than the other. Currently this is a means of giving myself more time to figure out what I want to truly do. As a lot of my research regarding compatibility layers for do indicate software will work but not necessarily well (the reality of using such software to begin on a different OS). I don't want to risk bricking my iPhone which is a means of vital communication. I don't live in a place with an Apple Store...

So bricking my iPhone would be a huge issue; combine that with my inability to drive, it creates pain points unique to my own situation. Ugh, I would really love to use but if things go tits up, shit would be unnecessarily annoying. I have mad respect for those who can face those issues without worrying about what happens after something goes tits up. As an at best average computer user, the risk is kind of daunting.

@wendigo That I recognize ultimately as my usecase makes it a bit more challenging to get into Linux. I agree with the Big Tech comment because anyone with a working brain can see their scheme! All the more reason why I'm frustrated. ROFL I am that rube who couldn't hack it on Linux and I know it.

Big Tech makes comfortable spaces for people in situations like me to exist because they know about the hurdles of dealing with Linux. Freedom has a price that some can easily pay.

@wendigo It makes me want to donate to Linux projects that bridge the gap for people like me. Developing Phone OS and other software which leads to freer coexistence with computing without Big Tech Bullshit™️.

This morning I came on to Mastodon with people still talking about yesterdays revelation, with Microsoft and their new A.I program, saying that "just use Linux" is not an answer to the problem for the common person.
Well no shit, of course not. But here, on this specific platform, many of us are tech enthusiasts, programmers, retro OS collectors, or just work with I.T. in general. It IS an easy option for a lot of us.

@Dennis5891 Yeah, a lot of enthusiasts fail to remember that the average person simply doesn't have time, energy, or mental bandwidth to risk going non-default option. Even though I'm reasonably comfortable with installing a new OS, I recognize the mental bandwidth and time Windows saves me vs Linux.

Smaller steps are always better than huge leaps, it could be as minor as changing to Mac OS (I shudder as the big vulnerabilities regularly found scare me). Or even making use of Chrome OS...

@Dennis5891 Linux developers themselves could start working towards reducing barriers of entry which would stop the average person. The corporate friendly linux distros like Ubuntu for example can, as they've got the funding. Being non-standard and not supported by a lot of hardware or configuration by default makes it tricky.

Uninstalled all the Steam and GOG Games on my D drive so I didn't have to do it when Linux descends upon this PC. Windows was trying to be sneaky and block balenaEtcher from flashing Ubuntu but I made sure to give it the correct permissions!

@Klumpmeister I think you’d like Pokémon Arceus, it’s a fun game that gradually ramps up a level of challenge! Catching Pokémon is so much fun, I’ve accomplished the sneakiest catches; it warms the cockles of my heart. I’m kinda excited for the next Legends game, hopefully Gamefreak doesn’t drop the ball.

@Klumpmeister Heh, it’s a better quality nostalgia satisfying game, not perfect as 3d Pokémon games is something that Gamefreak struggles with these days. After the patches, it’s a better experience I can say with certainty.

@Klumpmeister Scarlet and Violet were an overall disappointment in terms of performance and somewhat bland open world! They squandered a chance to make trainer levels scale dynamically to keep battles fresh. I found myself over-leveled and mostly unchallenged. The Elite Four and a few trainers made me think strategically and challenged me. Overall, they could’ve tried harder with that game duo!

I wanted to go out and get a pizza today. I really wanted one.
But, I decided to do something with the last of my leftovers in my fridge before they went bad.
I made some "leftover soup". Had a ton of potatoes and carrots in it, and some onions. And just a bit of meat.
It was kind of tasty. Not bad.

@Dennis5891 This is why I try and shop weekly so food waste isn’t a huge problem. Also making things that freeze well so my larder is stocked with a manageable amount of food to consume.

@keenan Do whatever helps, expressing those feelings will make it easier to learn. The anxiety meat (brain) is a strange thing, which sometimes works in unexpected ways. I couldn't tell you how many times a good cry made it easier to do something (example, fix a strange bug when I was on linux. Those tears made my anxiety meat calm the hell down).

Reading about Ubuntu and nvidia’s LLM development collaboration, it seems like none of the features will be forced on end users via software updates. It seems like an opt-in situation, for which I’m thankful. As Microsoft and other companies are going about LLM integration wrong. Forcing users to test unsafe software is a horrible strategy.

I did download both the latest Linux Mint Cinnamon and Ubuntu 24.04 LTS; While at work, I will decide which distro to install. Even though I weighted Ubuntu lower in my list, I’m drawn to it! Tonight, I will be making bootable drives using balenaEtcher.

@wendigo I’ll consider Ventoy as after reading the page, seems like a slick software! It might delay my installation till tomorrow though. I’ll have to read the instructions several times over. ROFL Anxiety for the win and loss.

Backed up all my important data but I need to go into BIOS and make sure the boot order is accurate otherwise it could cause issues for a Linux installation. Secondly, UEFI is turned off already because I was Linux curious and waiting for a good time to switch.

Most of my games are already Linux compatible but a chunk of them are not, SunnySide and Coral Island are rebuys on console. Xbox Series S and my Switch are going to help me access other gaming titles!

@wendigo Agreed, I didn’t want my install fail, so Secure Boot will be off until a full installation is completed. I half remembered that Secure Boot while supported by Mint and Ubuntu, could cause issues.
