The number of papers has skyrocketed in recent years, and part of this seems to be down to predatory publishers asking for submissions, then stinging the authors for cash to get the paper published. There is usually no and only cursory examination of the paper's quality. https://blotreport.com/2023/09/30/thematic-sets-of-scientific-papers/

'Concerns about the decline of X as a source of reliable information extends beyond the scientific and academic communities. During the apparent coup attempt in Russia in June, journalists noticed its relative uselessness at helping them find real-time, breaking information from the ground and sifting fact from fakery, due in part to Musk’s trashing of its account verification system.'

Hm, well, #google is indexing #mastodon servers.

But in my view more important - not only for science, but in general - are #journalists, who analyze, evaluate, select, organize information and put them into context.

Even the #scientific #community itself is more based on people knowing where to find information than a good index/search function.

@Cloaker yeah, but not only won't there be any preview render of the link if there's an image in the toot, but it's also an important and vital part to follow #scientific standards and #LinkToSources whether one likes them or not.

After all, citing a press release isn't an endorsement but just transparency of sources...

"Another athlete mysteriously died... was it the #vaccine?" - you might have seen this before.

Media #manipulators constantly hunt for unexplained anomalies they can leverage for furthering their self-serving narratives.

This works because our brains do not deal well with #uncertainty; we tend to overfit unexplained datapoints into stories offered by others.

However, anomalies (fake or real) are just exceptional #anecdotes and almost always irrelevant to a #scientific #consensus on a topic.

Climate change is an immediate threat to the majority of the world's population.

We need a local, regional, state, national, and international "moon shot" type of concentration of effort using available resources while developing and advancing new science and technologies to counteract the damage humans have caused.

Without this type of all-out, universal cooperation, human civilization, and perhaps humanity itself, are in imminent danger of extinction.

ricardoharvin,
@ricardoharvin@mstdn.social avatar

It's these types of efforts where we need to focus basic and advanced #research, #scientific and #technological #exploration, and large-scale #commercial and #government #development.

Everything, Everywhere, All at Once is the most sound #global #philosophy and #strategy to potentially mitigate, and possibly reverse, the extreme damage we've done to our #climate and #environment.

#podcast #recommendations 1

  1. Space Nuts
I've already recommended this before, but I'm doing it again here because it remains my favourite. Run by host Andrew Dunkley (#radio host and #author) and Prof. Fred Watson (also author, and astronomer-at-large), #3space nuts dives into many space-related topics around the world and here in australia - ranging from supermassive black holes, to the latest crewed missions, to space telescope projects.

  2. Unexplainable
Hosted by Noam Hassenfeld, Byrd Pinkerton and Brian Resnick (and many more), Unexplainable covers the may #scientific mysteries that riddle our universe. From havana syndrome, to predicting tornados, to resurrecting mammoths, identifying housebug species, this isn't your regular 'mystery' podcast. It dedicates itself to explaining (or 'unexplaining') such mysteries through interviews with the experts involved - and teaching you along the way. Unexplainable is run by the VOX media group.

  3. 99% invisible
99 percent invisible is hosted primarily by Roman Mars, with stories presented by the rest of the team - including Chris Berube, Jason De Leon, Emmet FitzGerald, and more. It focuses on topics related to #architecture, Urban planing and #Geograpy While that may sound boring, it strays from what you would consider such a scope would contain, and the stories that 99pi tells are truly fascinating - for example, island sheep adapting to a diet of seaweed, or how lotteries work, all the way to why captions are so terrible.

I believe that to build reliable communities it takes a rational, evidence based, logical approach. method.

I would make it mandatory that members give their credit card details. Then charge a sum every time they post bullshit, depending on how many views it gets.

Who would join that? Intellectually honest people

Slogan: It's censorship because lies do not deserves a voice

    Business model: Monetise Bullshit

Who decides what is bullshit & how? Hmm great question!

As a scientist, it is so infuriating, that #scientific #journals that either take extraordinary submission fees or extraordinary publishing processing fees still can't just insert a video into the HTML version of the article. Not even a hyperlink. The text says "movie S1 of Supporting Information", so you scroll down to the bottom of the page, then open the "Supporting Information" page, then click on the link for "movie S1", that downloads the video file that you can play like in 1999.
