I've seen a lot of C64 demos, and 13:37 by Fairlight knocked my socks off. I was consistently hollering "duuuude!" at the effects, but it's also got great humor, a terrific art style, inside jokes, and cinematic storytelling. One of the best I've ever seen.

The #C64 demoscene is so impressive to me. They just keep pushing this machine farther and farther. This demo would have been unfathomable even ten years ago.

Automatic Updates on iOS do not work at all. My partner's iPad (2021 M1 Pro) is still on iPadOS 16 and her iPhone is on 17.3. Both have auto updates turned on and have been restarted several times.

Dynamic Link is Adobe's most useful and most useless feature. They haven't been able to make it reliable in the last 17 years. It's incredibly useful for motion graphics-type videos when you need constant quick iterations.

And don't @ me with Resolve/Fusion. A different league for motion graphics.

So what does the new AI stuff in Windows actually - you know, DO? Personally I think Recall could be very useful (no comments on privacy). What else? Every single time I wanted AI to help with something other than mimicking existing stuff - like anything that any half-decent human assistant would - it spectacularly failed.

@filiph that's what Recall is and it exists (or did anyway) for Mac as well. I remember 2004-ish arguments about uselessness of search on desktop all too well to be dismissive about this idea. But yes, it has to be local.

Other than that? Crickets. Nebulous promises of AI doing... Something?

So, this guy takes out his new AI phone from Samsung and takes a photo of the table we're sitting at. Then he does some magic stuff with his AI and shows me the picture.

"Look," he says to me. "There are three glasses on the table and in the picture there are five. Isn't AI amazing!" And he laughed.

And all I could think was that this is happening in millions of places every minute of the day. All this energy. All this water. All these materials.

Destroying our environment for this?

Visited my local 🍎 Store to try the new iPad Pros. They’re nice!

But I can’t justify upgrading my 2018 11”. The new model is much thinner, but the thickness and weight of my iPad aren’t issues for me. (At least not when it’s naked. The Smart Keyboard is hefty, but the new models are still heavy in that combo.)

The iPadOS software story at WWDC is going to be interesting. Because the only thing that really makes new iPad hardware desirable is the software it can run; which the older ones can’t.
