One of my tutorial students said "Oh so big data is lots of data, I thought it was a conspiracy like Big Pharma" and I'm now completely rethinking the last 20 years of my career.
A curated list of Mastodon accounts to follow if you're interested in #cartography, #maps, #geoviz'ualisation, visual aspects of #GIS and #geography etc. – 172 active accounts as of today!
Maybe a good way to get your feed going if you are #newhere…
There's a new map style on OpenStreetMap.org! The Tracestrack Topo map from @tracestrack.
It's a mix of osm-carto and OpenTopoMap. It has many improvements: more tag support (busway, embankment, cuisine, solar plants, aquaculture, pitch, sea, tree etc.), CJK fonts, etc. There is
also better internationalisation: country specific road shields, peaks
using imperial system in the US, hierarchical place rendering in China, etc. #OpenStreetMap#OSM#gischat#maps
With the latest changes it is now possible to run #QGIS in your web browser. Soon, you can package your data and serve it directly to user web browser with no spatial infrastructure.
Have you ever got a spatial object with broken geometry (e.g., an invalid polygon)? Do you want to learn about this topic and also learn how to fix it?
There is a great repo and shiny app created by defuneste.
For the past 2 weeks or so we’ve had an ongoing earthquake swarm very close to the town of Grindavík in the Reykjanes Peninsula. The swarm is very likely caused by an inflating magma body currently at about 5 km depth. The shape of the body is most likely a flat sill expanding and causing earthquakes. These events might lead to an eruption very close to people’s homes and lots of infrastructure.
The fourth eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula started at 22:17 this evening. I anticipate a long night and lots of #GIS work here at the Icelandic Met Office.

Officially {rgdal}, {rgeos} and {maptools} are now archived on CRAN. You probably know {sf} and {terra} very well. Here you can find other low-level alternatives to:
{rgdal} -> {gdalraster} and {vapour}
{rgeos} -> {geos} and {rsgeo}
Huge thanks to @rsbivand for 20 years of maintenance!
Long shot, but possible with my connections here. Does anyone have a copy of ESRI (1998) Maplex-Automatic Cartographic Name Placement Software?. - which used to be at http://www.esri.com/library/whitepapers/pdfs/maplexwp.pdf but isn't any more.
Apparently, it's a key reference for the cartography course I'm teaching next week and I've never heard of maplex before today.
The next festive year-end #QGISOpenDay is on the 8th of December 2023. We will be having a freestyle mapping session for everyone. If you want to share a QGIS plugin, workflow, or hack on this open day contact @Amz or see the event wiki for more info: https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/wiki/QOD-December-2023
