The Pels and the Thunder are two of my favorite teams to follow. Thankfully they're the first to provide decent competition today.

@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@peterme yeah they're both really fun up and coming teams, among my favs too

Wow, #BMFS is doing a Jerry Garcia / David Grisman cover

Edit: has been covered 33 times by BMFS.

Sounds amazing

@fogelnet I like that since he stopped doing Dead and Jerry tunes he still plays material they covered. Just not the originals. Though a lot of times he does a more trad or Doc Watson style take than the way Garcia did those songs

After more than 16.5 yrs, we had to say goodbye to our little buddy, Willis Jackson. His heart could no longer keep up with his relentless spirit.

Took this pic today. Willis & I always watched Rangers playoffs together. I’d pet the shit out of him (as long as he’d let me) to work off anxiety.

I yelled “Who wants to watch the Rangers” & he stood up on his own & wagged his tail. He passed out from another cardiac event 20 seconds later but nice to see one last excited tail wag.

- adored every damn page of steve waksman's "this ain't the summer of love," broadly about the unceasing / / collision, but beautifully granular, connecting micro-scenes to . it equally brought alive conversations i know about in detail (punk), ones i don't (metal), & made me thirsty to read more , listen to more , etc.. combined with his masterful "live music in america," i now wanna read everything waksman has written. @bookstodon

mrcompletely, (edited )
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@bourgwick @bookstodon oh nice. That was my crossover. I was a metal kid, I knew classic rock and some current radio music but at like 12 (in '81) I got heavily into the British New Wave Heavy Metal - Iron Maiden and Judas Priest - their dramatic aesthetic fit my Dungeons and Dragons mindset. But at 13-15 I started going out and experiencing all ages live shows which meant punk of all flavors and fell in love with the energy of it. Then at 16 the Dead jumped the line in the biggest possible way

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@bourgwick @bookstodon and the scene interactions were absolutely not entirely friendly or peaceful. Most visible around Corrosion of Conformity, an early crossover band that attracted both punk and metal crowds, before "thrash" was a well understood venn diagram overlap between them. Both are hard drinking subcultures given to expressing their feelings in a physical way.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@bourgwick yeah I'm adding it to my list for sure

Weird band. More fascinating than great. But fascinating

@bourgwick nice to see contemporary reviews of Doc that seem to get what he was really up to. "encyclopedia of folklore" seems to have been very much the mission statement, not just singing and playing

Thinking about bands that could fill the Sphere AND use it to its full potential, and I keep coming back to Tool being #1 on my wishlist.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@chopaganda Tool, Beyoncé, that's pretty much the list I think...?

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@chopaganda @jessay @drewphish pearl jam? The U2 of nirvanas?

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@caravan @justinbruce @chopaganda @jessay @drewphish I agree that's the Dominique Wilkins of slam dunks

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@chopaganda @Rosey @BEK97 @caravan @justinbruce @jessay @drewphish I truly respect Beyoncé as a performer, musician, philanthropist and human being, but she's also put a lot of work into making sure that an image of her ass projected to the size of the Sphere would be hot beyond the limits of human imagination. So I'll go ahead and admit I think that's the best case scenario even over Tool's millennium DMT living geometry aesthetic, though that's also very much in my wheelhouse

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@caravan yep I'd think so

Sphere

Music
N1
<gap>
N2

Loved S1 last night but S2 was pretty up and down. And overall last night just doesn’t have the firepower of N1

Visuals
N2
<big gap>
N1

Ranking the visuals from the couch is akin to ranking restaurant dishes from Instagram photos. Still, seemed like they used the Sphere better last night than N1. Given that these are planned shows, N1 wasn’t a learning experience. So assume N3 will be better than N2 and N4 > N3.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@maxellxlii90 @chopaganda he's totally wrong, of course.

(I don't really know, I've been high and then much higher the last two)

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@maxellxlii90 @chris @Nolasox @chopaganda supposedly it was keyed to shifts in the spatial sound field? Idk, those visuals stunk as did most of n1. Last two nights crazy good

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@maxellxlii90 @chris @Nolasox @chopaganda after seeing the last two nights it's even more embarrassing on a professional level how primitive and amateurish the visuals on n1 were with 3 or 4 exceptions. I'm sure it still looked cool in person, but that's the venue, not the videos. I was shocked at the lack of transitions, timing, layers, generative effects, agent based modeling, realtime filters, interference patterns, all the elements of good modern vfx. All of which they've shown since then 🤷

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@maxellxlii90 @chris @Nolasox @chopaganda put it this way, I know at least two people personally whose light show work would be much cooler than anything from n1 if projected that big. But the last two nights have crushed, so what's up? The floor the last two shows was the ceiling on n1. It's just weird. Like they were dumping the B list material

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@maxellxlii90 @chris @Nolasox @chopaganda very possible considering some of the interview quotes.
