Can I get a little signal boosting help, pls Mastodon? 🙏

I’m looking to fill some free time helping out organisations working for #conservation and #biodiversity.

I have a weird hodgepodge of programming/program management/marketing expertise, and am currently studying towards a MSc in biodiversity and wildlife health. Teeny tiny bit of past conservation NGO experience. Based outside Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Happy to volunteer, in field, or behind a desk, whatever you need.

I would like to enjoy mastodon but sadly my feed is dismal….. if you research, post about, or love, and not limited too, #R or please say and I will follow you!

Last month we released #kakapo back onto mainland NZ for the first time in living memory. All four have just had a health check and are doing well. We’ll look to release more kākāpō to Maungatautari soon. Pic: Dani Whitaker #returnofthekakapo #parrots #conservation

Good news, everyone! The Yurok Tribe will now co-manage 125 acres of Redwood forest, a gateway to the state/national park, along with the National Park Service.

The tribal nation signed a memorandum of understanding Tuesday with Redwood national and state parks and the non-profit Save the Redwoods League.

Tonight there are now 10 #kakapo living wild in the North Island of #NZ - probably the most for over a century. We’ve just released six more at Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari to add to the four transferred there in July. #conservation #returnofthekakapo #parrots

An historic day for #kakapo #conservation today. We’re transferring four males to Maungatautari, a large fenced reserve in the North Island of NZ. For the first time in nearly 40 years kākāpō will back living on the mainland of Aotearoa. #returnofthekakapo

I love it when trees grow on rocks. It shows just how determined and resilient they can be, if we let them.
This oak is part of one of the few remaining areas of temperate rainforest in the UK - look at the tree ferns growing on it.
We need to protect and extend these precious remnants.

This is in portrait format.

There’s a new island! On Friday we released four males to Te Puka-Hereka/Coal Island, the southern-most island in Fiordland, with Ngāi Tahu and the Coal Island Trust. This is to help relieve the pressure for space on the main breeding islands.

From ReWilding magazine: wildlife crossings are effective! They reduce car-animal collisions and allow animals to re-populate areas from which they had been previously excluded. This article shows five examples, including this crab bridge on Christmas Island. There's even an aerial monkey crossing in Brazil.

I realised today that this may be of interest (a curiosity???) to those outside of New Zealand.

We have large, culturally significant trees called Kauri (Agathis australis). Unfortunately there is a disease (Phytophthora agathidicida) that kills Kauri and can be spread by infected soil on footwear.

These footwear cleaning stations are common at the start and end of tracks to try and slow the spread of the disease.

👍 HarperCollins made a tiny tweak to its book design—and has saved thousands of trees as a result

In an effort to reduce the carbon footprint of each book, they’re tweaking fonts, layout, and even the ink used. The goal is to pack more into each page, while ensuring that the pages are as readable as ever. And so far, these subtle, imperceptible tweaks have saved 245.6 million pages, equivalent to 5,618 trees.

Bumblebees will nest in any suitable sized cavity, so I’m going use prompt “around logs” as my cue to talk about the rusty-patched bumble bee (Bombus affinis). The rusty-patched bumble is a pollinator native to North America and was common here in Ontario as recently as the 1980s. It is now sadly on the brink of extinction, 🧵1/n

A new study finds forests could potentially store 226 billion metric tons of carbon if protected and restored, or about one-third of excess emissions since industrialization.

Nearly two-thirds of this potential lies in conserving and letting existing forests mature.

The authors say that restoring deforested areas through community-driven approaches such as agroforestry and payments for ecosystem services is essential.

Coastal erosion on the west coast of Indonesia’s Sulawesi Island is so advanced that seawater has penetrated the groundwater supply that tens of thousands use for drinking water.

The communities have yet to be served by utility water provision, so families are resorting to costly supplies of water from private distributors.
