The loko i’a system of native fishponds in Hawai‘i has for generations provided sustenance to Indigenous communities, supported fish populations in surrounding waters, and generally improved water quality.

These benefits, long understood by native Hawaiians, have now been confirmed by scientists in a new study that looked at the restoration of one such fishpond.

Ah. 5:30 am in #Boulder and it's so lovely to wake up to the FTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT PBBBBBBRRRR FTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT PBBBBRRRRRR of yard sprinklers.
Special shout out to the apartment that has a sprinkler that just sprays the nearby shed with a high powered jet (power washer on plastic) and the neighbors who spray across their metal mailbox pole (high-pitched ringing every 10 seconds)

A bettong bewildered by bagging

Photo is a bettong that has been caught by researchers. The good news is their population has maybe tripled over the last few years in Australia's largest nature preserve that is free of introduced predators - it has 45km (28mi) of 1.8m (just under 6') tall fencing to keep it that way. The Aral Sea, once the lifeblood of peoples in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, is parched, shrouded in a layer of toxic salt and dust.

Officials from both countries are working with locals to plant a new forest of drought-resistant plants in the dried-out lakebed, to prevent sandstorms and mitigate the health impacts of breathing in the toxic dust.

Angola’s Afromontane forests are considered to be the country’s most threatened habitat type due to logging, wood harvesting and fire.

Experts say the forests are relics that harbor “fading biological fingerprints” from a previous epoch.

As El Niño and climate change bring drought to the northern Philippines, farmers say the value of local heirloom seeds shines through.

Farmers say these seeds, cultivated through generations, show greater resilience to drought and heat than commercial hybrid seeds promoted by the government.

A network of seed savers, spearheaded by rural women, is working to revitalize the traditional practices of saving seeds.
