I'm a PhD student doing #Immunology and #SystemsBiology research. When I'm not researching or coding, I love learning new things, biking, and attempting to make cartoon style #DigitalArt with vector-based graphics (primarily #AffinityDesigner).

Profile picture is a drawing of me with crazy hair flowing upwards. Cover photo is a WIP.

POLL: Suppose sponsors supported your local Fediverse instance in return for a set number of ads per hour (20 or less), and never with an algorithm positioning them. And the ads stay local to that community and don’t federate.

Is this a reasonable proposition to offset the costs of communities?

okapilips,
@okapilips@mstdn.social avatar

@shoq
Intrigued by how split this is -- currently almost even across the board! I voted yes it'd be reasonable. I donate monthly to my instance, but I know many others aren't in a financial position to. Would at least love a way to optionally enable this type of ad injection to support the server!

A reminder: in code, naming is a design activity; it is not merely labelling.

okapilips,
@okapilips@mstdn.social avatar

@kevlin Just like in design, there are happy accidents, right?

I needed a new variable for a small project, but forgot I alr had another with the same name elsewhere. Luckily when I made the new variable it was an egregious mispelling 😅 That unintentional design has now persisted in the code for over a week 🤭

I had been using MessagEase for a few years, and was always feeling a bit uncomfortable with it because it's closed source and was unmaintained for years.

I tried out Thumb-Key a while ago, but that's missing some basic features I'm really used to :/

Now that MessageEase is suddenly jumping on the "annoying subscription stuff" train, I really need to switch though... is there any other of this type, that maybe has more features than Thumb-Key?

okapilips,
@okapilips@mstdn.social avatar

@flauschzelle

I've tested many unconventional keyboards, and MessageEase was one of the best (despite appearing fully abandoned). Sad they're going sub-based.

I eventually gave up on the 9-key keyboards in favor of Unexpected Keyboard. It's set up as a traditional qwerty, but the dev recently released fully custom designs. It supports gestures: swipping diagonally on keys to unlock punctuation, etc. Not confident it'll suit your needs, but hope you find something!

Yesterday was the busiest repair cafe we've had since we opened a year ago - the biggest thank you to everyone who came for your patience and support.

Three cheers for all our fabulous volunteers.

Get your guesses in for how many items came through the hands of our very talented volunteers this month. Closest guess gets a free repair 😉.

Just discovered that my favorite mobile game, came out with an update offering daily levels. Just played today's, and was only 10 minutes over par 😅... Hopefully I get back in shape soon.

Any advice on how to explain to my boss that I'll be adding this 15 minute experience to my list of daily games (currently and ) while at work will be appreciated

On a related note, either the leaderboard function is broken or nobody else playing this game (🥲) bc it listed me as top for the day... But hey, it's probably my only chance at getting a first-place so I'll take it

Hey #BikeTooter!

The other day I was riding my partner's bike slowly up a hill, and the back wheel just bent, folding in on itself. The bike jerked to a halt which was quite a fright!

The tire is now pressed up against the break pads, and I'm wondering whether this wheel is going to need replacement, or if it can be easily repaired (professionally—I enjoy doing repairs, but I don't want to risk my partner or I reliving this on a busy street!)

#Bicycle #Repair #BikeRepair #MyBikeIsntBiking

okapilips,
@okapilips@mstdn.social avatar

My web searches on the topic have yielded varied results...some sites suggested that the bends could be easily repaired by truing, and others that if the rim is bent, repairs aren't particularly viable. Is there a good way to assess?

The bike is getting old (abt 12yrs), and the derailleur mechanisms are also quite shot, so I imagine if the wheel needs to be replaced, it may be time to go shopping...

PS: The lesson isn't that we should stop using search engines to confirm or disconfirm questionable info. It's that 𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘴𝘬𝘪𝘭𝘭. We must learn and teach it.

I love when studies directly contradict my assumptions about how the world works. Especially when it's such an easy assmption to make that I've never put any effort into even considering it.

I mean I hate that this is true because I worry about the world and there aren't easy ways to get everyone up to speed on effective media literacy... But still so cool to see experiments that change my mind on a topic

@kissane just wrote the ultimate 'Threads vs Fediverse' explainer.

If you want to understand what all the debate is about, this is mandatory reading:

@ParadeGrotesque @kissane

I think this is really insightful, thanks for sharing! While I still stand tentatively on the side of "I'd like to also connect with those on mainstream social medias," I recognize this stance is not without many compromises.

I think this lays out some critical threats #Threads #Federation poses, and I hope that the tools/functional assurances instance admins and users need to protect themselves from poor moderation or harassment become available in time

I'm very naive in the space, but does anyone know of specific individuals or places that we could go to to fund the type of security development that would be most needed here?
