It’s weird to be riding on a cable car in San Francisco, a method of transport developed here in the 1870’s, and see a fully autonomous self-driving taxi pull up right next to you. #history #transportation #science #cars #robots

Today my “work” was reporting on the total solar eclipse—such a surreal, spectacular 3+ minutes on the shore of Lake Erie with other umbraphiles…I love huge shared experiences like this

nellgreenfieldboyce, to science

The U.S. is a month away from seeing a total solar eclipse…on April 8, unlike 7 years ago, the path of totality will go through a lot of urban areas. Around 32 million live in this path, but more live nearby….& the difference between seeing a “meh” partial eclipse and an OMG total eclipse may be just driving across town. Experts say, get into totality if you can—as even a 99.9% partial eclipse is nothing like a total one.

Today I’m mourning Flaco, the NYC owl who inspired so much concern, sympathy, inspiration, and love. RIP

I recently got to ride this fun trike at the math museum in NYC. Reading about it further, I learned that “for just about every shape of wheel there’s an appropriate road to produce a smooth ride, and vice versa,” as one article put it.

Oh sure you say you ❤️ your 🐈 but would you save its little dead paw and make a taxidermy letter opener, like Charles Dickens did for his poor departed Bob in 1862?

Combined with earlier layoffs, these LA Times layoffs = the loss of about a third of their newsroom within 1 year. Last year the U. S. news business as a whole saw thousands of layoffs. Over the last decade, tens of thousands of journalism jobs have been lost… that means so many stories we never see. I know so many colleagues, good reporters, who have lost their livelihoods. 🙁

Here’s a study taking on the idea that snakes can’t hear sounds through the air. (I talk to my 🐍. ) So many myths about reptiles out there. In another life maybe I’d be a snake cognition researcher.

Medical masks, gowns, and gloves—the U.S. struggled to get these essentials from overseas at the height of the pandemic, so the gov’t has spent more than $1 billion to develop domestic manufacturing. But some companies now say they need more help to finish the job and find customers. And would-be glove makers showed me huge, unfinished factories that sit idle…

It’s a relief to me to learn the annual Mineral Cup has its own website for voting/mineral fandom and is not dependent on any particular social media platform….32 minerals duke it out and may the best mineral win! Will the victor be another newcomer like quetzalcoatlite in 2021 ? Or the controversial winner, ice ?
