Well, isn’t that lovely: our JWST image of the inner Orion Nebula & Trapezium Cluster is today’s Astronomy Picture of the Day 🖖🙂🤘

Thanks to everyone who’s sharing the images & don’t forget that you can download them at full resolution under a CC BY-SA licence via the link in the next toot 👇

#SLS #LaunchCost : "the operational costs alone for a single #Artemis launch—for just the #rocket, #Orion spacecraft, and ground systems—will total $4.1 billion" 💰💰💰💰 * https://arstechnica.com/science/2022/03/nasa-inspector-general-says-sls-costs-are-unsustainable

4.1 billion / ~100k kg = 41.000 $ / kg 🤔

Interstellar organic chemistry gets a boost as JWST detects a new carbon compound in space for the first time. Methyl cation (pronounced cat-eye-on) (CH3+) was detected in a young star system with a protoplanetary disk, known as d203-506, located about 1,350 light-years away in the Orion Nebula.
The methyl cation molecule is important because it aids the formation of more complex carbon-based molecules.

Can data science help decode 3,100-year-old “Ramesside star clocks”?

Ancient Egyptian astronomical texts are difficult to interpret. Computer modeling might help.

Since we're talking all about the of the this week, I started thinking more about scorpions (one of the ways this "hero" died)

And, I learned about this creature: Pulmonoscorpius -- an extinct scorpion that was about 28" long.

Gaia is metal.

The #GlobeAtNight campaign for March 2024 will run from March 1-10. We urgently need people from around the world to look for #Orion in the sky, and report back what it looks like here: https://globeatnight.org/

Please share with your networks, including off Mastodon!

If you look at the Orion constellation there are the distinctive stars forming the belt and sword in the centre. The middle “star” of the sword is actually the Orion Nebula - M42. This is that nebula. One of the brightest it is also the closest star forming region to earth. Shot IC434 (Horsehead) & M42 (Orion) in one frame, 2 sets. The first set is meh, got walking noise and that’s a thing. The second set I’ve fixed it (kinda) but the sky wasn’t clear and shooting with a full moon .. is… interesting. <insert loads of tech nerd stuff here>. But I still kinda managed it in post processing so here we are. #astrophotography #orion #horseheadnebula

Got home after dinner last night, and saw we had really nice clear skies.

So pointed the Seestar S50 at the two great nebulas (Horsehead and M42) in Orion for about 30 mins each.

The results …..

Under city skies, so the Bortle 1 skies of the Atacama in a couple of weeks are really going to be next level. I can’t wait to see what it captures!

A Planetary Disk in the Orion Nebula is Destroying and Replenishing Oceans of Water Every Month (www.universetoday.com)

Astronomers used JWST to study molecules in a protoplanetary disk in the Orion Nebula to follow the destruction and replenishment of water. Planet-forming disks are places of chaotic activity. Not only do planetesimals slam together to form larger worlds, but it now appears that the process involves the destructive recycling of...

Interesting 🤨

Betelgeuse looked particularly orange tonight compared to Rigel’s blue, more so than normal I thought 🟠🔵

I wonder if the nearby Moon was bright enough to trigger the cones & their colour vision more strongly than they would be if there was no moonlight?

Or maybe this is all just delusional hooey 🤷‍♂️🤪
