in 2020, #github and a few other companies made a push to remove the terms "master" / "slave" from branch names. instead, they started a push to rename everything to "main".
yet, i've heard that this isn't actually helpful. many people have cited this as performative #activism and useless language coddling that doesn't affect real people in a meaningful way.
i want to hear your opinions on this, specifically if you're #black#brown#bipoc#poc. does this kind of change make you feel more comfortable, or is it just performative?
Okra Stew is a beautiful book about food, family, ancestors and Gullah Geechee culture.
Okra Stew is a wonderful read. I love how the author added the recipe at the end of the book, as well as information about the Gullah Geechee people.
Partially based on Shawn Amos’s own experiences growing up the son of Wally “Famous” Amos in a mostly white area, and packed with humor, heart, and fun illustrations, this debut novel sings with the joy of self-discovery, unconditional love, and belonging.
There's a lot of reasonable outrage today around how Katalin Karikó was treated throughout her career (full disclosure: by my employer, UPenn). Obviously a number of someones made a huge mistake by not recognizing the brilliance and potential of her work - no question there!
What I've been thinking about and I'd love to get some scenius input on: how could we, as an academic community, do better?
Taking seriously the notion that 1) we want to support the Katalin Karikó's, 2) high-risk, high-reward research takes time, and 3) everyone needs to go through a job evaluation at some point, here are a few ideas:
*) Better support to help geniuses communicate (and fund) their ideas.
*) More funding for high-risk, high-reward projects
*) A longer evaluation period for individuals engaged in high-risk/high-reward research
@NicoleCRust In addition to your good list, the first thing that came to mind was bias--against women, and more broadly against minorities/poorly represented people (#BIPOC / #LGBTQIA ). Note also that personnel evaluations tend to be highly subjective generally. They can be at the mercy of managers, including those that don't like competition from the people that report to them. TY for sharing your thoughts on this.
“Thirty years ago, if I told you that a bunch of billionaires and intellectuals on the right are waiting in the wings to impose a dictatorship on the United States, you would have said that I was insane,” he said.
“But it’s no longer insane. It’s now real. There are those people out there,” Linker added. “The question is: will they get their chance.”

Mussolini's definition of #Fascism was 'the melding of #corporation & state.
So #CitizensUnited is a good watershed to choose but...
I've come to understand that fascism is what we're taught to call it when #capitalism starts treating everyone the way it's treated #BIPOC folks the whole time.
Ppl have been telling me to sit tf down & relax since the 1980s
MISSION:
The 23for23 initiative amplifies and elevates marginalized voices in publishing by promoting, showcasing, and celebrating the works of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color dedicated to telling stories that center marginalized identities.
HERE'S HOW YOU CAN PARTICIPATE:
Read 23 books by BIPOC authors about BIPOC characters by the end of 2023
I think the TurtleIsland.video PeerTube install is good. Should be permanent, but we'll call it a release candidate for now - RC1, ha!
Def have some some configuration and decorating to do...
The CDN is much faster than the VPS disk, so it's livable, but I definite am seeking #BIPOC#PeerTube instances to peer with, which will improve performance and community.
Are there any out there, or is TurtleIsland.video the only one?
Before you ask any #BIPOC woman why they're so angry - have you considered asking the same women about what experiences they've lived through?
Perhaps if you did that first, you'd not need to ask us BIPOC women why we feel angry because asking us about our lived experiences will fill in a lot more than simply asking us why we are feeling so angry.
It helps a lot - knowing how to communicate better & knowing what questions to ask instead of automatically assuming we're all angry for no reasons.
we as #furries should be working to elevate #bipoc voices both within and outside of the fandom regarding peoples lived experiences because they also affect us but they affect others who are a part of these intersectional experiences in a way worse way.
ask about how #AffirmativeAction is being accomplished by the teams that are running your conventions!
and don't settle for "we're a diverse team of queer people", most of the #furry#fandom is #queer. we need more #bipoc voices explicitly, or we're going to fall prey to the clutches of #whiteness and #christofacist sanitation. ask why there isn't more information talking about race in the fandom and talk about why it's important!
#ChinaGovernment is looking to #exploit more #DesperatePeople in countries mostly ignored by #GlobalNorth - including many African nations, Trinidad & Tobago, South American countries; where poverty is very high & pretty much anywhere else where natural resources haven't been fully plundered yet & the citizenry is poor with #corrupt govts willing to make shady deals with Chinese state.
I'm Chinese in Canada. I know well, how their govt works. Don't try to justify govt abuses/exploitation to me.
Teaching the masses about the vulnerability of POC during covid and the health disparities may have back fired. More and more white people during covid deliberately placed POC in harm (white cop spitting on cashier). I experienced this on more than one occasion. My city is so diverse that at time white people are the minority, however the racism is worse than in the segregated south. The more we speak out the harsher the climate becomes. #racism#bipoc#blackmastadon

Within the confines of Home As Corpus, each dress is juxtaposed with the works of five other #artists hailing from #diverse#diasporic#cultures . Abijako's intent is to underscore that these dresses transcend their role as mere garments, transforming into sculptures that evoke the essence of his #Nigerian heritage and personal recollections.
