astro_jcm, The Atacama Desert in #Chile has some of the darkest night skies in the world, perfect for #astronomy. But it's also a very seismic area. When an #earthquake hits, how do we keep our telescopes safe? We tell you all about it in this new video: https://youtu.be/y_nfFwKwmmM
astro_jcm, Soon the telescope platform at ESO's Paranal Observatory in #Chile will look very different at night: all four of the 8.2 m telescopes of the VLT will be equipped with lasers! This is one of the ongoing upgrades of the GRAVITY+ instrument, which will allow us to study black holes, stars and planets like never before.

Photographer Yuri Beletsky: ‘I captured this view at one of the remote sites of the Atacama Desert in Chile. The Galactic centre was already shining high in the sky, with the zodiacal light beautifully complementing it on the right. The blue colour was as real as the stars in the sky, adding a touch of magic to the scene’

astro_jcm, Happy #BlackHoleWeek to those who celebrate! Here's a pic I took a few years ago back when I worked at ESO's Paranal Observatory in #Chile. One of our 8.2 m telescopes was pointing at the centre of the #MilkyWay, home to Sagittarius A*, a #BlackHole 4 million times more massive than the #Sun.
Astronomers devoted almost a century to unmask this beast:
https://www.eso.org/public/blog/our-quest-for-sagittarius-a/
until the Event Horizon Telescope finally imaged it:
DelRider, @astro_jcm What's the purpose of the laser? Is it to help correct for aberrations due to the atmosphere? And why yellow? -Cheers
astro_jcm, @DelRider The laser excites sodium atoms in a layer 80-90 km above the ground, making them glow. This creates an artificial "star" that we can use to monitor atmospheric turbulence in real time, correcting it with a fast deformable mirror.
EDIT: forgot to mention that it's yellowish because it has a wavelength of 589 nanometres, chosen to excite those sodium atoms.

astro_jcm, Need to blow off some steam? You're not alone –– galaxies sometimes do that too. Ok, not steam per se, but still.
This is NGC4383, observed with ESO's Very Large Telescope in #Chile. This nearby galaxy is undergoing a burst of intense star formation that is ejecting huge amounts of gas out of the galaxy, seen here as red filaments. 1/2

astro_jcm, This image was taken with the MUSE instrument at the VLT. MUSE doesn't take images per se. Instead, it breaks the light coming from every point within its field of view into a rainbow or spectrum. This provides astronomers with a wealth of information about the motion and chemical composition of the gas and stars at different points within the image.
Or, put differently: MUSE provides images at thousands of slightly different colours, all in one go, as seen here: https://www.eso.org/public/videos/potw2427a/

Konenpanien, Today, on International Earth Day, I bring you a photo of my favorite Chilean plant. Puya alpestris or chagual, this beautiful plant is slow growing, and can take many years to flower, between 2 and 5 years. Human action has caused the population of these plants to decrease, which is affecting species such as the largest butterfly in Chile, which is now in danger of extinction. You never know how the disappearance of one species could doom another.
