there's a layer of corporate people who are interested in virtual presence in meetings, because for them meetings are not about information or problem solving, but about signaling and self-presentation. being seen at the meeting is much more important than the content. also, seeing their underlings at a meeting gives them some sense of power as well. their problem to solve is "how can I be more visible at all times"

zompus,
@zompus@phire.place avatar

@lzg When you put it that way it sounds like one of those social events in Regency England period pieces, like Bridgerton or Pride and Prejudice.

One of the things I love is when a noob starts watching Trek shows for the first time, and they're like, This is so silly, it's ridiculous, that guy turned into a lizard and impregnated his captain, that lady got possessed by a sex ghost that belonged to her grandma, the captain is sorting a room full of floofy guinea pigs, the ship runs on mushrooms, this theme song makes no sense, and I'm just like Yeah, isn't it great?! You either get it or you don't, I don't know what to tell you.

@RickiTarr My favorite thing is when someone is doing their first watch of TNG and they get to Sub Rosa and they're like "Did Dr Crusher just"

and I'm like "Hell yeah she did!"

#capoeira Professora gave us a break from tournament prep. Last night's practice games were free, no restrictions except that we were playing to a 70 second timer for endurance.

The Professors from the Neighboring Group came by to join in class and to thank us all for coming to their batizado. They proudly pointed out that our group showed so much support we nearly outnumbered members of their own extended group.

Thinking still about my #capoeira game and my strengths and weaknesses. I am relatively slow, not springy, my reflexes are not quick, but I am also sturdy and solid from years of kung fu. So if I try to play an agility game with someone way more agile than me, I will not be "successful." Thinking about how to force someone to play a structure/strength game rather than agility. It would not be very capoeira-like.

Yale Climate Connections: What you need to know about record-breaking heat in the Atlantic

zompus, to instagramreality
@zompus@phire.place avatar

Time for my periodic thread now that season is heating up. Make sure to ignore manufacturer's recommendations on room size for air purifiers and go right to the CADR rating. Room size should be about 1.5x CADR.

For example this model uses that guideline: https://www.aromalivingstyles.com/whirlpoolr-wppro2000-whispuretm-air-purifier-gunmetal.html

328 CFM CADR, to 508 sq ft, about 1.5 area to CADR ratio

zompus,
@zompus@phire.place avatar

This model is deceptively advertised:

https://www.amazon.com/LEVOIT-Purifier-Home-Allergies-Pets/dp/B07VVK39F7

141 CFM CADR, it should be for a 210 sq ft room but it's advertised as being good for a 1,095 sq ft space. It will clean all that air...eventually.

zompus,
@zompus@phire.place avatar

Per here (https://airconditionerlab.com/cadr-rating/) if you're sizing for wildfire smoke, go for CADR equal to your room square footage. So if you have a 100 sq ft room then go for a 100 CFM CADR air purifier.

zompus,
@zompus@phire.place avatar

Just like anything else, don't buy weirdly-named air purifiers off Amazon. I wouldn't trust company names like AROEVE, MOOKA, or CHIVALZ. Go for a name you recognize, like Whirlpool, Honeywell, etc. Buy them in person from Home Depot or Lowes. Also look for how easy it is to get filter refills, and how much they cost. We're not quite to printer ink levels of "cheap machine, expensive refills" but buyer beware.

zompus,
@zompus@phire.place avatar

Here's another ripoff example:

https://www.lowes.com/pd/Molekule-Air-Pro-6-Speed-Smart-Gray-Silver-True-HEPA-Air-Purifier-Covers-1000-sq-ft/5014611909

Rated for 1000 sq ft! "FDA cleared"! Must be worth $1000!

Except its CADR is 234 CFM, and it's not AHAM certified. So no official testing of its capability, plus it cleans air at about 2/3 the rate of this one, which is only $400:

https://www.aromalivingstyles.com/whirlpoolr-wppro2000-whispuretm-air-purifier-gunmetal.html

zompus,
@zompus@phire.place avatar

That Molekule device is trumpeting that it got an FDA Class II clearance as a medical device. But as far as I can tell, this classification is required for all medical devices, and generally means that they're safe and as effective as another cleared device. Not that they're especially good or worth the money. It would be like a car company charging extra for their car because they passed a crash test.

https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/consumers-medical-devices/learn-if-medical-device-has-been-cleared-fda-marketing

zompus,
@zompus@phire.place avatar

In any case, if you're in an area that is going to get wildfire smoke this year, and you have the bucks to do so, buy some air purifiers or build one out of filters and a box fan. It's cheaper to do that than to pay for the medical consequences of breathing smoke.

#capoeira question for practitioners: How would you train to respond to fast martelos and other front kicks? A classmate of mine can land a martelo or a bencao on me faster than I can react, and I'd like to solve the puzzle of what to do in response. They can even start a martelo with one leg and actually attack with the other leg if he sees an esquiva in progress.

This week I've been working on arm positions to catch/deflect martelos if I esquiva the wrong direction. What else?

@pmartin

zompus,
@zompus@phire.place avatar

@pmartin Yeah I'm thinking that moving toward them might be my best bet. With the tournament practice we're being less "nice" to each other because that's closer to what we're going to face in the competition.

zompus,
@zompus@phire.place avatar

@pmartin Thanks, I have similar thoughts! I've been specifically training raisteria's this week but I'm very slow at them. My training partner is fast enough to see the rasteria coming and adjust to kick with the other leg so I get a martelo in the chest instead of towards my back. I've been working on training in arm position to block and catch the martelo in that case.

zompus,
@zompus@phire.place avatar

@pmartin Our school does do both the high rasteira and the low one. We don't have different names for them, I think we just call them low and high.

In drills last night I did the low one a few times with partners and it worked out well. For tournament play we're told not to go low, not to go to the ground, not to turn and show backs, etc, so low turning rastiera is less appetizing. I'll be happy when we're done with this tournament stuff, it's such an odd style.

zompus,
@zompus@phire.place avatar

@pmartin Thanks! I'm fortunate to have enough training time to adjust my focus slightly and come up with a different result. Last night I had better success with esquiva lateral and coming in close rather than moving away from kicks. I didn't get to play that one fast person, though, they had to leave early for something.

    I wrote about billionaires. I didn’t mention how there are no ethical billionaires and I neglected to include a recipe for preparing them with carrots and onions and a nice gravy.

    But I did cover just how wildly wealthy a very small number of Americans are, how raising their income tax would barely affect them, and why we should do it immediately.

    A thing about I think of now and again:

    I am anticipating a possible middle-future cultural phenomenon where a ton of people, starting with -ers, express that they love video games and want to play more but they're getting too old for them. That is, their eyesight and reflexes and so on begin to drop below the threshold to enjoy them, en masse.

    This hasn't been a problem with other mass-cultural media before, right? You generally don't get too old for books or movies and such.

    I really want to know if there are academic studies or something quantifying people's driving getting crappier post-pandemic. Today I saw someone totally use a left turn lane with a green arrow to speed straight through an intersection past cars stopped at a red light. If someone going the other way had been turning left it would have been a head-on collision.
