Voted in #SantaFe#NewMexico today, a place where the Democratic primary determines some of the ultimate races. One race really struck me as emblematic of the future, assuming constitutional democracy survives in the U.S. 1/
@heidilifeldman That would suit me just fine. I have ALWAYS voted Democrat, because the Republicans have been a danger to this country since Reagan. But I'm far to the left of my fellow-Democrats. I just won't vote for anyone else until a multiracial, multicultural democracy is the face of this country. Once the dreaded idiots of the GOP are gone, I welcome right-leaning, left-leaning, and centrist American voters to work out a better, more representative government.
“ governments and policymakers “need to thoroughly investigate underlying causes of persistent excess mortality and evaluate their health crises policies.”
@auscandoc Going with "we had about 4 to 5 million very stupid people who refused vaccines and succeeded in getting themselves, and other, innocent people, killed."
@auscandoc I briefly hoped they might die out, solving the problem, but alas! About half survive and manage to infect others. For this, so many lives - of doctors, nurses, healthcare workers - were lost.
There is a shallowness to this piece today in the New York Times on punishment for student protesters. There is no political analysis that puts the actions of universities in the context of the larger assaults on higher education & the pressures to crack down that come from outside, not within. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/04/us/politics/college-protests-charges-students.html
@giki Cows always look resentful to me. Like "Our ancestors once used YOUR ancestors for hoof wipers, muthafuckers, get that damn camera lens outa mah face."
Maria is picking blueberries near Arvin CA. She earns by how many pounds and buckets she can pick in a day. Sometimes the field quality is good but other times she barely makes enough to cover her expenses. #WeFeedYou
@ufwupdates Ay, Maria, there needs to be jobs in this field that will support people on those days when they cannot work. I am so sorry this has not happened for you, and I will work to make it happen.
@bornach@metin People who posit such ridiculous notions are afraid of the messiness of reality and life. You can't plan ten minutes ahead because NONE of us knows when we will die or become disabled, or our entire HABITAT will be destroyed. And these days, that includes our PLANET. I laugh at those who plan out their lives. How quickly we are derailed!
With a net worth in excess of $30 billion, Miriam Adelson is continuing her husband's tradition of being a kingmaker in Republican politics, and she recently signaled to Trump that the campaign cash spigot could be turned on IF he comes out in favor of allowing Israel to annex the Palestinian-controlled West Bank territory, and if his administration recognizes it as Israeli territory.
Genuinely quite surprised at the number of people coming out to say throwing a milkshake at Farage was 'assault' and must never happen to politicians. I absolutely agree politicians should not be subject to violence, but there is a long, proud history of throwing foodstuffs at people as a form of protest. Intended to humiliate and ridicule, not to injure. Pleased to see Mastodon mostly agrees. #Farage#Milkshake
@ProfLouiseL As you know, in THIS country (across the pond), there is a long, proud tradition of pieing politicians in the face. Please have a stern word with the ninnies who are considering abolishing this practice. Pie-throwing and milkshake-throwing are clearly naught but a people's longing to, as it were, get closer to their politicians. A milkshake's kiss is sweet indeed, and I'd like to see the person who refuses a taste of pie.
