Health researcher, interested in qualitative methods, patient experience, NHS quality improvement, COVID, rural and remote healthcare. Pro-European, linguist, in love with Italy. Still furious about brexit. Cat fan (other animals welcome). Annoyed by attempts to autocorrect my very deliberate punctuation choices.

Time split between Aberdeen and Oxford, but mostly Oxford now I'm semi-retired.

Genuinely quite surprised at the number of people coming out to say throwing a milkshake at Farage was 'assault' and must never happen to politicians. I absolutely agree politicians should not be subject to violence, but there is a long, proud history of throwing foodstuffs at people as a form of protest. Intended to humiliate and ridicule, not to injure. Pleased to see Mastodon mostly agrees.

So glad the rumour that Johnson got turned away from a polling station for lack of photo ID is actually true. Hilarious. Reportedly the fool thought an envelope with his name and address on would do.

I am editing some very cute red squirrel footage taken a few years back with a handheld camera, and trying to get a smooth looping gif out of it.

There is a chance it has worked (I mean, not perfectly, but not bad given the source) and if so I might have to award myself some kind of trophy.

And it's not 'tragic', like it's just some terrible unforeseeable accident. It's a known problem that horses will die at #Aintree. A 'racing certainty', even. https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/horse-racing/breaking-grand-national-death-giovinco-32573705

@paulste I'd forgotten about Horse Death Watch, thank you for the reminder. Aside from and deaths, there have been 2,773 horse racing fatalities in the UK since March 2007 when Horse Death Watch was founded. 15 deaths last month.

This is so frustrating, COVID hospitalisations increasing in all age groups over 55, yet boosters only going to those aged 65+. This is why I'm paying for a booster at Boots at the weekend, but I'm lucky I can afford it. It should be available more widely (particularly if rumours are true that in the Autumn the government was throwing away unused doses rather than give them to a wider age group).

ProfLouiseL,
@ProfLouiseL@mastodon.social avatar

@eclectech There was a certain amount of publicity a few weeks ago, but then Boots didn't get their act together for a couple of weeks more. it is only certain branches. But you can also search pharmadoctor.co.uk for local pharmacies offering it, and there do seem to be some in Scotland

Your annual reminder, if you're in the UK, not to watch the Grand National horse race, not to bet on it, not to take part in an office sweepstake as "a bit of fun". It's cruel. 4 horses died during the Aintree meet last year, and 4 the year before.

@grb090423 Same goes for greyhound racing. Shockingly the Oxford dog track, which closed in 2012, reopened in 2022. People think it's "fun" for a work outing.

@Kaetchi @grb090423 I was taken to the Grand National as a child, aged 9 or 10. My family were all racing fans, no-one thought anything of it - though they were all animal lovers and my mum would be very upset if a horse got injured. But they just didn't question it. ☹️

Just bought myself a German novel on kindle. In German, £8.99. In English translation £3.99. Rather shocking, that a book which includes the double labour of author and translator sells for less than the original.

Today I learned that the original meaning of 'hearse' is 'an elaborate framework erected over a coffin '. Here's a fine example from the Earl of Warwick's tomb from the Beauchamp chapel (though really I took the picture for the rather cuddly interperatation of the Warwick emblem, the bear and ragged staff). Plus another cuddly bear from the same chapel, on the tomb of Ambrose Dudley.

A rather dopey little bear with a red harness, a blue collar and a chain lies at the feet of Ambrose Dudley, with one of his front paws crossed over the other

New YouGov MRP analysis suggests that a Labour landslide could see Jeremy Hunt, Penny Mordaunt, Jacob Rees Mogg and Iain DuncanSmith lose their seats. And just possibly Michael Gove.
When it finally comes I know this is going to be an all-nighter. Can't wait to see multiple Michael Portillo moments.

Was anyone else listening live to the St John Passion on its 300th anniversary. Bach often moves me to tears but the St John is an especially emotional narrative, with deep reflection in the arias and chorales. To me a tighter and more powerful work than the St Matthew.

Short reflections from Nick Tyrone on why it's a huge mistake for the Tories to sneer at London as if anyone beyond the M25 hates it. I live about 60 miles from Hyde Park Corner. I lived in London when I left university. My sons live there. I go regularly to see friends, go to the theatre and galleries, and I love its multicultural richness. Sneering at London is not the vote winner they seem to think.
