I think what hurts the most about Daily Kos laying me off was not the fact that management didn't even bother talking to me to do it, it's that they sold me a bill of goods when they hired me that they clearly had no intention of following through on. I gave up other opportunities to work for them because I believed in the mission. And after using me and exploiting me, they laid me off after taking everything they could.

@Brandi_Buchman Your work is fantastic. I really appreciated it. MSNBC should hire you. Anyone should, but I saw you there and you were great, as well as your reporting for Daily Kos. I am so sorry to hear this.

📷 | This 35-picture postcard from 2000 was DIY PR, trying to get someone's attention who might give me a job, buy prints—something; I was skint.

An agent saw them. He was retiring and not taking on new photographers, but sent them around, and I got work within months.

The images were made in SF and Marin between 1990 and 2000. All models are amateurs.

The images are shown full frame; no cropping.

In 1961, a mob of armed KKK attacked the Monroe NC neighborhood of NAACP leader, Robert F. Williams. But they messed with the wrong ones that day. Williams & his followers engaged in an intense confronration that sent the Klan bolting. Contrary to the prevailing narrative that they were hapless victims of violence, Black Americans regularly handled business protecting themselves & their families from KKK & other racist mobs.

Both Rosa Parks and Claudette Colvin were “rebellious,” the white and Black establishment BOTH looked down on them, and neither was the first Black person to refuse to give up their seat for a white passenger in Montgomery. The fight for equality and against injustice was long and difficult and it was a collective struggle, not an individual one.

Thanks for going the extra steps for your millions of dum dum students. How the legal system works should be baked into elementary and high school educations. Cheers and happy Saturday!

'We Never Stopped Applying Pressure’: Hard-Fought Success on Rail Sick Days

    https://www.ibew.org/media-center/Articles/23Daily/2306/230620_IBEWandPaid

    >"We’re thankful that the Biden administration played the long game on sick days and stuck with us for months after Congress imposed our updated national agreement,” Russo said. “Without making a big show of it, Joe Biden and members of his administration in the Transportation and Labor departments have been working continuously to get guaranteed paid sick days for all railroad workers.

@TheWarOnCars Ah! That reminds me of when many of San Franciso's freeways and ramps were damaged by the 1989 earthquake. Ended up just taking them all down, and bringing sun and life back to whole sections of the city. No Giants Stadium without the earthquake. I actually loved the ramp that flew into the sky in front of the ferry building clock. But it made the ferry building almost inaccessible, certainly not pleasantly accessible. Such change! Hayes Valley is all due to damage as well.

A Trump-appointed federal judge has ruled strongly that Tennessee’s anti-drag law is unconstitutional, probably the first of many such rulings nationwide

    susiemagoo,

@emilygorcenski Clothing and ornament and all adornment is speech. Often the only means of expression available. And usually the only utterance strangers can hear from others. Restricting dress and adornment in any way is restricting speech. Rules regarding amounts of allowable nakedness may be fine, but must apply equally to everyone, not be gendered. #ClothingIsSpeech #AdornmentIsSpeech #ERANOW

Hypothesis: An ethical and compassionate choice of action or policy, as opposed to a more severe or punitive or hate-driven course of action or policy, leads to better outcomes at less financial and other cost to individuals and society/community.

Seeking real examples to the contrary.

    susiemagoo,
    @susiemagoo@mstdn.social avatar

@markusl lol. Nothing comes at greater cost to society than an army. Nothing is more punitive and pricey than initiating war. In the context of society as such, and how to govern it, I think it holds. Unfortunately the choices made by leaders are commonly punitive and pricey. I think there are awful reasons for that, rooted in the psychological delight some people take in punishing others and feeling superior.
