@sidawson@mastodon.nz

Trying to understand the universe & my place in it. I love my bike. And trees. And birds. And bees. Our furry little buddies. Bees are rad. Have spent a decent amount of my life either falling over (Aikido) or falling off things (climbing). I code a lot. No, a LOT. Also, I'm an energy healer (for lack of a better term).

Oh yeah. Black lives matter. Trans rights are human rights. Vaccines work. Nazis fuck off.

@jackyan@mastodon.social avatar

I don’t think it’s down to familiarity that I can think while writing in #WordPerfect and not in Word. There’s something so shitty and amateur about the #Microsoft UI that it just distracts (or angers or frustrates) you.

sidawson,
@sidawson@mastodon.nz avatar

@jackyan @phil_stevens So. Right about when Gates left.

Tells you everything you need to know about MS.

sidawson,
@sidawson@mastodon.nz avatar

@jackyan @phil_stevens Who? Gates? No. He was actually pretty gun (in his early days, not that he did much, later). His priorities were always world domination though. Meant he (pushed his teams relentlessly until they) created (eventually) pretty good products, BUT, there were choices in there that were anti-user - if they would get in the way of his true focus - smashing the entire world into subservience.

sidawson,
@sidawson@mastodon.nz avatar

@lightweight Sure. That's largely the biz side - where he was ferocious+vicious (described as "Doing business with MS is like being in a knife fight").

But, it was always a truism that however shit MS products were initially, by v3 they were generally pretty good. True of both Word & Excel, at the very least.

Of course, as I said, the whole thing was twisted by "what's best for MS" being VERY different from "what's best for devs, the world, users, etc"

sidawson,
@sidawson@mastodon.nz avatar

@lightweight Excel was absolutely top notch (as far as these things can go). But, the ribbon bar in 2007 put the nail in the coffin (IMHO). Largely downhill since then.

Before that it was stunning (buggy when pushed, but amazing considering the zero-experience-to-scary-expert range of users it supported).

Although even before 2007 you could see cracks appearing as they jammed ever more features in, damaging the core product, simply to force new sales into their next sales cycle.

sidawson,
@sidawson@mastodon.nz avatar

@jeremy_list I was a VERY high level Excel user at the time. Eg had probably 90% of the keyboard shortcuts memorised as muscle memory. Almost never needed the mouse. Was FAST. The ribbon crippled me. Oh, while solving a problem I didn’t have and didn’t care about. So yeah. Major hate from me.

@T I’m ok. But I’m ok coz I’m avoiding local politics as hard as I can - primarily by not being on here (since it was the only local forum I regularly visited). Appreciate the look in though, thank you. I hope things aren’t going too stunningly shit for you, teeth wise :/ <hug>

Looking for an office suite that doesn't spy on you or share your data? We're here. LibreOffice is open source (you can study how it works), and backed by a non-profit @tdforg. Enjoy.

sidawson,
@sidawson@mastodon.nz avatar

@libreoffice @tdforg Ohhh, I realise this is a terrible place to ask, but please PLEASE can you stop the “click eg Calc and it opens the suite” nonsense. I NEVER think “I’d like to do some spreadsheet work please”, then, when the app opens, think “oh, no, I was wrong, actually a document instead”. That forced extra step is AWFUL. It’s enough friction I just end up using Numbers (which I hate) instead.

Please, please: Click app open app.

This is macOS. Maybe other platforms are better.

Dredge now crashes every time I dock my boat. Ie, it’s unplayable. Ugh ugh ugh. Have left support req with team17 (publishers), & sent a slew of crash reports. (+ obv, tried every poss fix I could find).

Another guy I know had it crash and kill his save file, losing everything.

I would have ranked it super high, for its genre. Now? 1/5? The first couple of hours are fun. If you’re ok with paying for something you KNOW will burn you.

What’s the opposite of gg?

sidawson,
@sidawson@mastodon.nz avatar

@doug The broken save issue I think they fixed around version 1.1.0 (current is 1.3.0). But, the endless inescapable crashing? Yeah. That’s current. And yeah, it’s a super delight. Followed by super despair.

At 3 hours it IS just getting started - I’d say just enjoy what you can, but don’t get attached.

sidawson,
@sidawson@mastodon.nz avatar

@doug Interestingly, I heard back from team17 (the publishers). Wholly unexpected. They offered a suggestion (which didn't help), but I'll just keep filing crash analytics, see if eventually their system notices there's enough crashes to fix the problem, ha ha. There's at least part of a dialog there though, so, we'll see how it goes. DEF better than expected (ie me shouting into an unanswered void).

sidawson,
@sidawson@mastodon.nz avatar

@doug Yeah? Dredge is the only one of theirs I’ve played so far. Given the crashes though, I doubt I’d want to risk my money on any others :/

Well, it’s some small way I can show/give support. I got two, one like this with small sunflowers, and one with a large sunflower overlapping the band.

Beautiful work, I love them both. By the very talented Olga Patlyuk, https://www.etsy.com/shop/HappyJewelryHelga

    It is strange and disturbing to see so many posts on social media that deny it's a war crime to stage a surprise attack on civilians (including murders, kidnappings, and rapes) or to starve out a civilian population (by cutting off electricity, food, and water).

    These are both obviously war crimes and should be discussed as such.

    sidawson,
    @sidawson@mastodon.nz avatar

    @maxkennerly @briankrebs At the risk of over simplifying, a large percent of those will be Putin’s disinformation bot army, followed closely by paid vatniks, and then “useful idiots”. Finally, yes, all the usual Hamas supporters, and of course, closet anti semites, who’ll never miss a chance to come out to play.

    But that first group are definitely churning all this up for maximum effect. Which is why Putin (via Iran) paid for & supported it in the first place

    MikeDunnAuthor, to random

    Spot the difference?

    Jews hate comparisons to the Nazis. But Yoav Gallant literally called Palestinians "animals," the exact word Goebbels used for the Jews.

    sidawson,
    @sidawson@mastodon.nz avatar

    @MikeDunnAuthor @bohemianchic Human animals, not animals. And it was addressed to Hamas, not Palestinians.

    And if you’ve been paying attention to what there is documented proof of Hamas doing, in the last few days(which I won’t discuss because it’s too vile), you’d accept that it’s actually a generous interpretation of Hamas’ actions.

    Finally, all humans are animals. That’s basic biology.

    @doug Fccck, Doug, that fucking sucks. Please, PLEASE, when you clear negative, go very, very gently on yourself for at least 6mo, preferably 12. And by that I mean, no exercise heavier than maybe walking to the mailbox for the first 3mo, and < 1km walks after that.

    (my partner was positive for hmm, 3 weeks? long time. We had to do that, but I'm 100% sure it's what protected her from long covid)

    This is a long, but very worth reading piece on The Atlas Network - a group of 500+ right wing "think tanks" who have sought, with funding from big oil (etc), to demonise & criminalise climate change activism. Why? Higher profits, of course.

    They're VERY well funded, and indirectly, killing us all: https://www.desmog.com/2023/09/12/atlas-network-vilifying-climate-protestors/
