I've been asked if I can name another aspect of contemporary tech that has been as badly handled as the deployment of AI ... (not including cryptocurrencies). That's a toughie. AI is probably the winner, even if we included cryptocurrencies. AI will probably end up wasting even more electricity than cryptocurrencies, and is being stuffed down everyone's throats in a way that cryptocurrencies haven't been. And while cryptocurrencies impact financial markets in various creepy ways, AI is pretty much polluting EVERYTHING now. Yeah, there's no beating AI for evil in these respects.

The thing about chat control / upload filters / client side scanning, whatever it's being called now; They are responses to an old generation of technology - one of an internet governed by centralized corporations.

Anonymous, peer to peer, file sharing exists. No centralized place to subvert - except the software running locally. Imperfect now, but intrinsically extant.

What proponents of these laws really want is to roll back the clock; something that is, fundamentally, not possible.

For those who aren’t aware, Microsoft have decided to bake essentially an infostealer into base Windows OS and enable by default.

From the Microsoft FAQ: “Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

Info is stored locally - but rather than something like Redline stealing your local browser password vault, now they can just steal the last 3 months of everything you’ve typed and viewed in one database.

It’s going to be interesting to see how Microsoft get out of this one. They may have contractual commitments to ship Recall with external parties.

I thought they were risking crashing the Copilot brand with this one, but I was wrong looking at the videos and comments on them - I think they’re crashing the Windows consumer brand.

The reaction to photographic memory of what people do at home has - you’ll be surprised to know - not been seen as a reason to buy a device, but a reason why not to.

#China #BYD #EVs #USA: "“The Western markets did not democratize EVs. They gentrified EVs,” said Bill Russo, the founder of the Automobility Ltd. consultancy in Shanghai. “And when you gentrify, you limit the size of the market. China is all about democratizing EVs, and that’s what will ultimately lead Chinese companies to be successful as they go global.”

Inside a huge garage in an industrial area west of Detroit, a company called Caresoft Global tore apart a Seagull that its China office purchased and shipped to the U.S.

Company President Terry Woychowski, a former chief engineer on General Motors’ big pickup trucks, said the car is a “clarion call” for the U.S. auto industry, which is years behind China in designing low-cost EVs.

After the teardown, Woychowski, who has been in the auto business for 45 years, said he was left wondering if U.S. automakers can adjust. “Things will have to change in some radical ways in order to be able to compete,” he said."

@remixtures The US is the Oil Empire. There will only ever be one.

China wants to displace the US as the global hegemon. That requires displacing the Oil Empire, which at its most basic means domestic decarbonization in China. Hence EVs and solar are for-serious policy.

In the US, cars exist to create a market for fossil fuels. (Suburbs exist to create a market for cars.) Incumbent power requires this; incumbent power rests on this.

Incumbents refuse all change they have the power to refuse.

#AI #GenerativeAI #UMichigan #LLMs #DataProtection #Privacy #AITraining #HigherEd #Universities #USA: "The University of Michigan is selling hours of audio recordings of study groups, office hours, lectures, and more to outside third-parties for tens of thousands of dollars for the purpose of training large language models (LLMs). 404 Media has downloaded a sample of the data, which includes a one hour and 20 minute long audio recording of what appears to be a lecture.

The news highlights how some LLMs may ultimately be trained on data with an unclear level of consent from the source subjects. The University of Michigan did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and neither did Catalyst Research Alliance, which is part of the sale process.

“The University of Michigan has recorded 65 speech events from a wide range of academic settings, including lectures, discussion sections, interviews, office hours, study groups, seminars and student presentations,” a page on Catalyst’s website about the University of Michigan data reads. “Speakers represent broad demographics, including male and female and native and non-native English speakers from a wide variety of academic disciplines.”"

Study finds that Github Copilot lowers code quality and maintainability:

"We find disconcerting trends for maintainability. Code churn -- the percentage of lines that are reverted or updated less than two weeks after being authored -- is projected to double in 2024 compared to its 2021, pre-AI baseline. We further find that the percentage of 'added code' and 'copy/pasted code' is increasing in proportion to 'updated,' 'deleted,' and 'moved 'code. In this regard, AI-generated code resembles an itinerant contributor, prone to violate the DRY-ness [don't repeat yourself] of the repos visited."

The paper concludes: "How will Copilot transform what it means to be a developer? There's no question that, as AI has surged in popularity, we have entered an era where code lines are being added faster than ever before. The better question for 2024: who's on the hook to clean up the mess afterward?"

: "Green activists in Paris are making a final push to win a landmark vote tripling parking charges for SUVs in a move aimed at tackling air pollution that is being closely watched by other cities such as London.

Paris residents will be asked to vote on Sunday for or against a special parking tariff for heavy, large and polluting SUVs parked by non-residents, as the French capital aims to target rich, out-of-town drivers entering the city in order to tackle climate breakdown and air pollution.

In final campaigning before Sunday’s vote, the socialist mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, canvassed parents outside a primary school in the 10th arrondissement near the Gare du Nord, where pollution from large boulevards, traffic on small backstreets and a lack of green space had led many residents to call for fewer cars."

This is a credible proposal for DRM for websites in general. It would enable unbeatable adblock-blocking. It would prevent user customization for not just convenience but also accessibility.

I do not say this lightly: Enabling the forfeiture of control over the browsing experience is a fundamentally evil idea that must be rejected now, as it has been in the past, and we must remain vigilant against its reemergence in the future.

#UK #Surveillance #DataProtection #Privacy #SocialMedia #Facebook: "Britain’s biggest police force gathered sensitive data about people using its website to report sexual offences, domestic abuse and other crimes and shared it with Facebook for targeted advertising, the Observer has found.

The data was collected by a tracking tool embedded in the website of the Metropolitan police and included records of browsing activity about people using a “secure” online form for victims and witnesses to report offences.

In one case, Facebook received a parcel of data when someone clicked a link to “securely and confidentially report rape or sexual assault” to the Met online. This included the sexual nature of the offence being reported, the time the page was viewed and a code denoting the person’s Facebook account ID.

The tracking tool, known as Meta Pixel, also sent details to Facebook about content viewed and buttons clicked on webpages linked to contacting police, accessing victim services, and advice pages for crimes including rape, assaults, stalking and fraud."
