Some have rolled their eyes at the "paranoid" requirement from the #Debian community of in-person gpg key signing as a step to become a Debian developer, and it's often been a real barrier.

But I'm reminded of it at the #OSSummit keynote today as the #Linux Foundation's Jim Zemlin talks about the xz vulnerability and identity verification of developers.

It was never paranoia. It doesn't solve everything, and people can still be dishonest, but it was never excessive paranoia.

I love libraries.

But I also love hoarding books that are mine, precious.

And I have the disposable income that I want to funnel towards supporting human authors.

So sometimes I test drive books at the library by checking them out, and then buy them from my local bookshop halfway through.

A colleague from another company said something really kind to me yesterday on a recorded, public meeting. It made my week and I don't even think he realized it.

Everyone, do this more.

"Time to port man to z/OS! How hard could it be?" a fascinating journey of the complexities of bringing man to z/OS by Mike Fulton.

Does EBCDIC come up? You bet it does 😅

Open source family, what are projects using for bounties these days?

Yes, I can use a search engine, but it's a bit of a jungle out there, and it's hard to know who to trust. Not just with the money itself, but with proper financial procedures across jurisdictions worldwide (or at least, where they can operate, which they should be aware of too!).

I read in a parenting book that when your little kid is being particularly moody, you should check if they are:

  1. Hungry
  2. Tired

Turns out, this is a good strategy for all humans 😅

If I install a text-based client to run under screen, am I doing it wrong? 😅

Truthfully, I'm still clinging to IRC.

The fragmentation between all the graphical clients on Slack, Mattermost, and Discord means I don't regularly log into any of them, and I don't know what do do about this.

What are you doing, dear :mastodon: pals?

PSA: Headaches and migraines aren't the same thing. No, not even if they're bad headaches.

And since I sometimes get migraine auras, oftentimes the head pain isn't even the first sign of a migraine for me! The visual disturbance (they manifest as blind spots for me), losing simple words, and nausea usually are.

I'm grateful to people who try to help by sharing their headache solutions, because I know their heart is in the right place, but I'm battling a whole different dragon over here 😕

The @chaoss project is one that I've loosely followed, but haven't been able to carve out time for (yet!) so I'm really glad I could spend the afternoon with them here at #OSSummit

Lots of good discussions and project updates, along with seeing several folks who I've enjoyed catching up with 🤗

I joke about having a #mainframe at home, but Tommy Chang actually has one! Well, actually, he has an IBM z9 and S/390 Multiprise 3000.

We got to meet and have a great chat this afternoon! #scale21x

Most of my work is so detatched from hands-on development these days I kinda feel like I'm goofing off at work when I spend all morning reviewing PRs on GitHub 😂

But this IS part of my job. No goofing! It just happens to be fun and particularly satisfying!

One of my favorite things about working in the #mainframe community is the wealth of experience and different perspectives to things that us Linux distributed folks have taken for granted for...ever.

Want using man pages to be made easier? Lionel Dyck used Charm's gum tooling to do just that. Behold, Mantastic! ✨📚

His examples are on a shell on z/OS, but I played with it on Debian too.

On April 7, 1964 the IBM System/360 was launched, 60 years ago today!

On Thursday I was able to head up to the Poughkeepsie, NY site where much of the work and ultimately the launch actually happened.

The IBM Corporate Archives put together some great displays for the internal event, including pulling out the scale models, and then I got to finally meet several folks in person as we celebrated the to the next 60 years of this legendary architecture 🤩

While the boys were having dinner, I brought my Oliver 9 #typewriter to the table to see if I could make progress on the alignment issue (cutting off the bottoms of letters) and discovered several more issues with the ability for it to advance properly and the effort it takes to switch to symbol mode and have alignment right. I seem to have a little way to go.

Not sure I'm setting a good example by bringing my latest tinkering project to the table while they are eating 😅 ...or maybe I am? 🤔
