I could fly to Dublin in less than two hours (net). I could do the trip with fast trains and boats in a day.

Or I can stick to slow trains and take three days.

Either way, the journey starts here. And now.

@partim Been there, wasn’t worth the effort.

23 pages of manure (literally, sometimes. I hate manure) that is the extreme-right Dutch Agreement can contain interesting stuff nevertheless. For there's two sentences (both on page 9):

  1. 'In the border regions, good rail connections with the neighboring country are essential.'
  2. ´There will be a proposal for cross-border rail transport, including the connection of five train stations to international HSL lines (e.g. Hengelo, Venlo, Heerlen, Groningen and Zwolle).' (1/3).
patrick,
@patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

The devil is in the details - which are of course still buried deep in said manure and may never surface. The first point does point towards some pressure (NSC probably) towards improving in Twente and Brabant. More pressure for electrifying Enschede-Gronau (real problem in .de though)? Better connectivity in Groningen? Hammont-Weert finally? (2/3)..

@jon Please, no reality check yet, they're not ready for that...

Ok

This was a good find by the @tubraunschweig students I was teaching today (with @ehrba)

Simbach (Inn) 🇩🇪 - Braunau (Inn) 🇦🇹

2.2km
3 min trip

DB price: €24,00
Or €10,90 per km

ÖBB price: €2,60

DB price is absurd

Map of Simbach to Braunau
ÖBB site showing €2,60

patrick,
@patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

@jon @tubraunschweig @ehrba Looks it wants to sell you a Südostbayern ticket as the route is operated by ÖBB and they can’t sell ÖBB tickets? Should just tell you that though, instead of this.

DJDarren, to Eurovision
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

I'll tell you what; listening to the entries without the accompanying choreography of the live show certainly helps me to figure out which ones are musically interesting. Particularly as the playlist doesn't note which country they're representing.

The Israel entry came on, and all I could think was how it's just a generic Eurovision entry. Nothing special about it at all. But I didn't realise it was Israel until I looked.

@DJDarren I long back to the time of the compulsory conductor & orchestra.

Happy Europe Day from Arles

patrick,
@patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

@jon Well, York, Sagne and Pskov I had to skip for obvious reasons. But the rest are - well, adventures. #crossborderrail.

patrick,
@patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

@partim @jon It’s just too long to show but involves a bus, regional train and another ship 😂. But DB Navigator does give a connection, which in itself is great!

patrick,
@patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

@jon @partim It’s not even a bad route - long, but with two decent nights in Milano and Kiato and one on the Bari ferry.

patrick,
@patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

@jon @partim I could only think of Utrecht.

Is Klagenfurt the furthest #DB #ICE trains go? Taking one from Villach to Mallnitz-Obervellach for hiking along the Tauern south ramp. Sitting in a BahnBonus seat, feeling like a rebel. (But it’s OK as that is valid only in Germany.) #Interrail

Oh, and of course, both the carriage order diagram and the electronic display said 1st class would be at the end of the train. So obviously it was the other way around.

patrick,
@patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

@tml Apart from Klagenfurt, I know of Brussels, Amsterdam and Chur. The last one is quite a long interswiss one via Basel and Zurich.

Via Lisa Rubin:

You know that corrected bond has filed today? Well, Tish James’s team has now made a filing of their own, asking, under a NY law, for a justification of the surety. What does that mean?

@GottaLaff A quick lookup: it appears to mean ‘you’re not qualified in NY, so show me the money as I don’t believe you have it’. See https://casetext.com/case/new-york-city-v-britestarr-homes for some background in another case.

Which reminds me: Does anyone perchance know an online source for French topographical maps from the first half of the 20th century? I still need to add the secondary lines to the but quite a few are already missing on the 1950s maps that IGN has.

Edited to add: In order to be able to trace the lines, the scale needs to be at least 1:100,000 but something like 1:50,000 or even better would be great.

patrick,
@patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

@partim how much detail do you want? I have a dutch atlas c ~1939 here…

image/jpeg

patrick,
@patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

@partim In which case: sorry ;).

patrick,
@patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

@rniamat @partim It looks like there's two optins there: the older (1920s etc) map style (but 1950s content?), or 'travel in time' with two quite old snapshots and a lot of aerial images. Both probably not what Martin is looking for. But thanks!

patrick,
@patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

@rniamat @partim But maybe gallica.bnf.fr can help, e.g. this 1905 map for Chemin de fer du Nord - though the level of detail may not be high enough: https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b53060256k/f1.item.zoom

patrick,
@patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

@partim @smveerman @rniamat Thanks for 'ruining' my afternoon, but have a look here: https://maps.lib.utexas.edu/maps/france.html; at least the 1:100.000 looks useable (1943-).

This afternoon I should, in theory, finally have the exit interview for the H&S course I sat the exams for a few weeks ago. The interview is to ascertain whether I asnwered the questions or whether I got someone else to do it for me. It should have been a couple of weeks back, but they were having technical issues.

Trouble is, I sat the exam three fucking weeks ago. I’m sat here looking at the answers I submitted and wondering who the smart guy was that wrote them.

patrick,
@patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

@DJDarren Back when I did my dutch eindexamen (a-levels?) I had to answer questions about the 15 books I had to read. The oral was in april, one of the books I put on the list I had read almost one year earlier. Only reason I put it on was because there was a maximum number of pages (!) and this was a short novella. Couldn’t remember what it was about, but explained why I put it on there, had a nice conversation and passed anyways…

Want to book a Interrail seat reservation for a TGV, TGV Lyria or Eurostar?

Don't bother using anything other than Rail Europe any more. Don't mess with ticket machines. Avoid extra booking fees. Just use Rail Europe. That's it.

Explained in my updated Interrail Tips & Tricks post:

@jon @deanerschnitzel Do you have any idea whether this is under investigation as a bug by the app team?

DJDarren, to random
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

Thought I'd see if I could get GamePass to run on my Mac.

Nope.

Turns out the app is written in such a way that requires it to hook into some system-level shit in Windows. And it's not compatible with ARM Windows, so I can't even run it through a virtual machine.

Boo!
