Happy Europe Day from Arles

@jon Well, York, Sagne and Pskov I had to skip for obvious reasons. But the rest are - well, adventures. #crossborderrail.

@patrick @jon I like how the advice for the Greek town apparently is “Take a boat and then, you know, figure stuff out.”

@partim @jon It’s just too long to show but involves a bus, regional train and another ship 😂. But DB Navigator does give a connection, which in itself is great!

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@patrick @partim I’m amazed it can route you there! 🙂

patrick,
@patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

@jon @partim It’s not even a bad route - long, but with two decent nights in Milano and Kiato and one on the Bari ferry.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@patrick @partim now I’m thinking about town twinning and #CrossBorderRail - I wonder if railway towns are twinned. Like Crewe twinned with Valenciennes or Hamm (Westfalen) for example. What’s the Dutch equivalent - a small town with a massive rail junction?

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@jon @patrick Amersfoort perhaps? What with the Wagenwerkplaats and all?

smveerman,
@smveerman@zug.network avatar

@partim @jon @patrick Is Liberec a big railway town? It is the sister city of Amersfoort :blobcatthinkingglare:

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@smveerman @jon @patrick It’s certainly an important railway junction.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@partim @smveerman @patrick Liberec has loads of lines. How significant it is for rail any more is questionable. Also where I am now - Miramas - is such a place. Small town, vital rail junction.

patrick,
@patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

@jon @partim I could only think of Utrecht.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@patrick @partim not Rosendaal? Or Hengelo?

@patrick @jon Arles to York is not so bad, although the obvious routing with changes only in Paris and London (11h9m) only works if you leave at 06:43. DB even tells you to take the RER D from Gare de Lyon to Gare du Nord, although it doesn't know the timetable. Still, 2h26m should be adequate even with Eurostar checkin. 30m between St. Pancras and Kings Cross could be a little tight, but there are later trains to York. New York, otoh...

jtwcornell91,
@jtwcornell91@hostux.social avatar

@patrick @jon Oh, Wikipedia tells me it's York, Pennsylvania. That explains the flag.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@jtwcornell91 @patrick indeed. Arles is a bit small to be twinned with New York 🙂
