Which reminds me: Does anyone perchance know an online source for French topographical maps from the first half of the 20th century? I still need to add the secondary lines to the #RailwayHistoryMap but quite a few are already missing on the 1950s maps that IGN has.

Edited to add: In order to be able to trace the lines, the scale needs to be at least 1:100,000 but something like 1:50,000 or even better would be great.

@partim how much detail do you want? I have a dutch atlas c ~1939 here…

@partim In which case: sorry ;).

patrick,
@patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

@rniamat @partim It looks like there's two optins there: the older (1920s etc) map style (but 1950s content?), or 'travel in time' with two quite old snapshots and a lot of aerial images. Both probably not what Martin is looking for. But thanks!

patrick,
@patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

@rniamat @partim But maybe gallica.bnf.fr can help, e.g. this 1905 map for Chemin de fer du Nord - though the level of detail may not be high enough: https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b53060256k/f1.item.zoom

@partim @smveerman @rniamat Thanks for 'ruining' my afternoon, but have a look here: https://maps.lib.utexas.edu/maps/france.html; at least the 1:100.000 looks useable (1943-).

It’s cloudy and rainy today, so I will probably just do a random tour of the surroundings. So many possibilities. Ostseebad Binz sounds intriguing. Or the Czech EC and have lunch in the dining car? #choices #Interrail

This afternoon I should, in theory, finally have the exit interview for the H&S course I sat the exams for a few weeks ago. The interview is to ascertain whether I asnwered the questions or whether I got someone else to do it for me. It should have been a couple of weeks back, but they were having technical issues.

Trouble is, I sat the exam three fucking weeks ago. I’m sat here looking at the answers I submitted and wondering who the smart guy was that wrote them.

patrick,
@patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

@DJDarren Back when I did my dutch eindexamen (a-levels?) I had to answer questions about the 15 books I had to read. The oral was in april, one of the books I put on the list I had read almost one year earlier. Only reason I put it on was because there was a maximum number of pages (!) and this was a short novella. Couldn’t remember what it was about, but explained why I put it on there, had a nice conversation and passed anyways…

Want to book a Interrail seat reservation for a TGV, TGV Lyria or Eurostar?

Don't bother using anything other than Rail Europe any more. Don't mess with ticket machines. Avoid extra booking fees. Just use Rail Europe. That's it.

Explained in my updated Interrail Tips & Tricks post:

@jon @deanerschnitzel Do you have any idea whether this is under investigation as a bug by the app team?

Thought I'd see if I could get GamePass to run on my Mac.

Nope.

Turns out the app is written in such a way that requires it to hook into some system-level shit in Windows. And it's not compatible with ARM Windows, so I can't even run it through a virtual machine.

Boo!

Personally, I’m all for Threads federation. I think it’ll be really good for Mastodon.

patrick,
@patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

@DJDarren I welcome anybody who wants to federate on an equal level. That includes feature parity, fair play (no muting of competitive product names e.g.), and also - for a large company like FB - active and honest participation in development via the open source model. As T has none of these three at this moment, the time is not (yet) there.

“Don’t worry”

A bold choice, but one I support.

@DJDarren If I say that the name of prof. dr. ir. P. Akkermans has been dropped, is that a too obscure Dutch reference?

patrick,

@DJDarren His story is worthy to be told over a beer, so I won't type it out and keep it warm for a real life meeting.

No one could accuse me of having logical thought processes, but I can’t wrap my head around my predecessors’ complete disregard for carrying out a part of this job logically.

I work on a huge site that has around 270 fire extinguishers, and part of my job is to ensure they’re all inspected and functional.

Each part of the main shed is split into areas to make this a bit easier. Our paint shop, for example, has 33 fire extinguishers, numbered P1 - P33.

So far, so sensible, right?

Right.

patrick,
@patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

@DJDarren IF you assume (note, IF) that they’re detiorating from inspection to inspection, the chance of having a working one in an emergency would be higher with staggered inspections. I don’t agree with that assumption, but it has some logic.

rolle, to threads
@rolle@mementomori.social avatar

I have seen the downsides of the Quote Post feature on Threads lately. There it is in even wider, in constant use, because there is no shares shown on your profile.

Quoting a post often puts others in a spotlight and not always in very flattering way. I have made that mistake myself as well. It doesn’t feel good if you criticize someone this way and people start slandering and it’s out of your control. I sometimes feel like a bully using it.

So if/when we ever get a Quote Post functionality here on Mastodon, I hope it will be different. Perhaps in this case the problem is Threads and the algorithm and not the feature itself though.

patrick,
@patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

@rolle Every functionality is just that - a functionality. Dealing with humans (ab)using it is the real issue, for which smaller instances are better suited than mega ones. Human interaction just doesn’t scale.

Welcome to this early spring trip. In celebration of the Channel tunnel’s 30th anniversary, I shall be taking the boat tonight, because it was fifty euros cheaper and is way more fun.

@partim There's something weird with UK seat reservations - I got a couple via GWR, telling the system explicitly window seat only, and all of them were aisle. Didn't use them in the end as enough window seats free on the same train...
