@jon @smveerman . Wondering how Amsterdam-Copenhagen would work? Wonder no longer, as GoVolt/FlyWise has just requested it.

@smveerman @jon Throw in Amsterdam-Munich for good measure. #bahnbubble

So #bahnbubble, do the passes in the #interrail sale (specific 10d/2m) still feature 3 in/outbound days? It seems impossible to see this before activating.

@kupfers NL, which was part of the pilot this year.

Another new railway entrance in the Netherlands. A company called Flywise wants to run a daily return trip Amsterdam - Berlin and Amsterdam - Paris and three times a week Amsterdam - Basel with classic loc-hauled intercity trains. Flywise is the company behind GreenCityTrip. Information and schedule are (in Dutch) available at the market authority ACM.

@jon @smveerman Does this help in regaining your tracking? Left Arriva/Heuro out for lack of viability; Flix for clarity.

@jon @smveerman And Amsterdam-Berlin. No time for Amsterdam-Paris: NS has only included dutch times in their proposal and I can't be arsed to find out the rest of the timetable... if anyone has it for me, I'll be happy to include it.

    When you’re about to set off on your bike and Belgium’s KMI app shows you this… 🌧️

    Sure it’s not nice news it’s giving me this morning, but it’s one of the best weather apps I’ve found - sadly only for Belgium though

    iOS https://apps.apple.com/de/app/kmi-irm-weather-for-belgium/id393832976?l=en-GB

    I think of selfhosting a single user instance with Hetzner. What VPS do you think would be sufficient/fitting? Please keep in mind, that I don't want to spend that much money on it.
    Oh and I will probably run glitch-soc...

    patrick,
    @patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

    @MagicLike @askfedi The smallest definitely suffices memory/processorwise but the key issue is storage. You'd either need to add a volume or use S3 storage as otherwise you'll probably run out (and still clear your cache after seven days or so!).

    🎉 Train strike tomorrow in Belgium

    SNCB website says ICE10 Frankfurt-Bruxelles is cancelled

    DB still has it running, and even with high load

    (I am trying to go to Bruxelles tomorrow, but using a regional train from Aachen - no idea currently if that one will run)

    ICE10 running according to DB

    patrick,
    @patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

    @jon A strike is not force majeur. See C-28/20. https://fra.europa.eu/en/caselaw-reference/cjeu-case-c-2820-judgment. Whether DB will honour this is an entirely different question as you know ;-).

    Looking for help from the #Windows users among you.

    I have a master file on the company's shared drive that I want to add an alias to in another folder. How might I go about that?

    :Edit: While using a Mac with access to the Windows shared drive.

    With #macOS, I simply right click > make alias > put the alias where I want it, but clicking on that in Windows opens the file as a bunch of gibberish. It's evidently opening the alias as a file in itself, not as a shortcut to the original file.

    patrick,
    @patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

    @DJDarren Assuming you can get the bash script to run, https://stackoverflow.com/questions/14982181/produce-lnk-file-on-gnu-linux-to-transfer-to-windows may (or may not) help you? Alternatively, run explorer under wine?

    Constantly hearing ”got tired of Mastodon’s technicalities, Bluesky is simple and amazing”.

    How we could design Mastodon to be more simple and have less technical-feel to it? UI is one thing, but that will not cut it all. I have probably said this before, but I am starting to believe no matter what we do we can’t ”win”. The narrative might need to change. 🤷‍♂️

    #SocialMedia #Bluesky #Mastodon

    patrick,
    @patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

    @phpfox @rolle Yes! The thing where Mastodon is complicated is that is used as a tool for social interaction. Interaction is difficult and sometimes complicated. Commercial platforms aren’t interested in human interaction, only in ‘sending’ messages to generate attention to sell for ad space. It’s post-and-forget for a lot of people, whilst here responses and discussion are expected as interaction is a two way street. That’s hard if you’re not used to it.

    Why I may not bother with Mastodon for much longer: a story in three screenshots.

    At the Hugo Awards ceremony last month in China, I was able to post directly to Bluesky but not to Mastodon or Twitter/X. There was clearly an audience on Bluesky.

    patrick,

    @jon @nwhyte Yes I saw them and starred at least one I think. You also posted something with regards to not being able to see/react to replies, and with that in mind didn't bother, sorry. As @cstross rightly pointed out towards @scalzi, Social Media is a conversation, and if only one side is talking it isn't much fun!

    5.3 metres – the degree of sea level rise now unavoidable from West Antarctic Ice Sheet melting ALONE – is sufficient to entirely submerge most of urban Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Dubai, and an enormous area of southern Iraq (Qatar gets off surprisingly lightly).

    Are they sure they want to pump YET MORE oil?

    patrick,

    @simon_brooke When I set the water level to 0.0m, most of the Low Countries (NL, BE, some F and D) is inundated ('toast') already whilst living in the area and looking outside it clearly isn't. My point being: the map isn't clear enough in which levels can be dealt with. At least up to 0.5m can be kept dry with current infrastructure; possibly more. So I'd be interested to see more depth (ahum) in that area - any links to more background info?

    @Alon @jon @DiegoBeghin Also, to be able to drive a car you need to be able to afford the upfront costs of buying one, insuring it, learning to drive, having space to park it etc. For some or even lots of people this may be no big issue; but for others it is a disequalizer, one that in a developed country should not be there (2/2).

    patrick,
    @patrick@mendeddrum.org avatar

    @Alon @jon @DiegoBeghin Exactly. Which gets us back to the original point that it's just not good enough (yet) and we have some work to do to design (public) transport systems to work for everyone, in an environmentally efficient and effective way. Not easy - especially in rural areas - but it will need to be done.
