Darn it! I thought I would have another couple of months to get the projected results for the new Northern Ireland constituencies onto the website...

http://www.ark.ac.uk/elections (but check it in a couple of hours, give me a chance)

I was in a work meeting about this time yesterday when my phone rang with an unfamiliar number, 0499 38 65 08. I excused myself, stepped out of the meeting and answered it. An automated message told me that a suspicious transaction of 2600 euro had been registered on my credit card; if that is OK, press 9, if not press 1.

nwhyte,
@nwhyte@wandering.shop avatar

It was definitely not OK, so I pressed 1, and got through to a human being who explained to me a suspicious transaction had been registered on my credit card; could he have my bank details please?

"Hang on, I don't know who you are," I said.

He ended the call immediately.

But how many people, harassed and hassled at the end of the working day, will give him their details and find a few hours or minutes later that their bank account is mysteriously empty?

I don't feel especially old, just slightly unfit and middle-aged as usual.

Delighted to start my birthday with a clip of 18-year-old me in the middle of the City of Belfast Youth Orchestra’s percussionists, playing Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade at a concert in the Ulster Hall in 1985. Full video posted on Facebook.

The second paragraph of the third chapter
It is ten years ago this month that I first posted what has now become a regular habit - the second paragraph of the third chapter of every book that I read. (which needs a bit of wiggle room for comics, plays and most poetry.) I have found that it often gives a brief (sometimes not so brief) flavour of the book as a whole, and of course it proves that I did read beyond the first two chap

Thrasher and Rallings’ analysis of the impact of the new constituency boundaries on the next U.K. election is out. I did the Northern Ireland bit of it (which I admit is less interesting than England, Scotland and Wales this time).
