Which reminds me: Does anyone perchance know an online source for French topographical maps from the first half of the 20th century? I still need to add the secondary lines to the #RailwayHistoryMap but quite a few are already missing on the 1950s maps that IGN has.

Edited to add: In order to be able to trace the lines, the scale needs to be at least 1:100,000 but something like 1:50,000 or even better would be great.

@partim how much detail do you want? I have a dutch atlas c ~1939 here…

@patrick Sorry, forget to mention: Ideally 1:50,000 or better but something like 1:100,000 might be enough to approximate in an overview map.

@partim In which case: sorry ;).

@patrick Not at all! Thank you for checking!

(I’ll edit the post to include the information.)

@rniamat @patrick I’m probably doing something wrong but if I click on the images, it still basically gets me to the 1950 map?

@partim @patrick left hamburger menu gives option to older maps

@rniamat @partim It looks like there's two optins there: the older (1920s etc) map style (but 1950s content?), or 'travel in time' with two quite old snapshots and a lot of aerial images. Both probably not what Martin is looking for. But thanks!

@rniamat @partim But maybe gallica.bnf.fr can help, e.g. this 1905 map for Chemin de fer du Nord - though the level of detail may not be high enough: https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b53060256k/f1.item.zoom

@patrick @rniamat @partim I have a paper 1930’s railway map at home, but probably not high enough scale.

@smveerman @patrick @rniamat I have a probably complete list from https://www.facs-patrimoine-ferroviaire.fr/histoire/les-chemins-de-fer-secondaires/liste/ and I can get stops from Timetable World, but want to have a course that is at least somewhat correct. Hence the topographical maps and the large-ish scale.

@partim @smveerman @rniamat Thanks for 'ruining' my afternoon, but have a look here: https://maps.lib.utexas.edu/maps/france.html; at least the 1:100.000 looks useable (1943-).

@patrick @smveerman @rniamat Oh! Nice find, thank you! I wonder if the 1:50,000 maps work from a US IP address. I shall find out.

@partim @smveerman @rniamat Leaving off the port number works but gives a small list of maps.

@patrick This just doesn’t go anywhere for me: https://maps.lib.utexas.edu/maps/ams/france_50k

@patrick I see now what you mean. But this is a good start. US Army series M761 is GSGS 4250 which turns up a few more maps.

@kaat0 Unless I am missing something, sadly no. I am looking for scans of historical topographic maps (like these but from maybe twenty years earlier: https://remonterletemps.ign.fr/comparer/?lon=2.464683&lat=46.729095&z=12.4&layer1=7&layer2=1&mode=dub1)
