Unpopular opinion: Fantasy sports are ruining real sportsmanship.

paninid,
@paninid@mastodon.world avatar

@mrcompletely
Now it’s ruining the careers of players themselves, since some can’t resist the urge to gamble, apparently.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@paninid it's mostly going to be the marginal players making lower salaries than their peers. Not only gambling themselves, but taking shady money to tweak stats you can bet on now. Sucks.

If “#AI is shorthand for shitty”, it turns out that management is realizing that “shitty is good enough”, quality is irrelevant, and the costs will be for their successor to bear: https://www.bloodinthemachine.com/p/understanding-the-real-threat-generative

This is the chain I’ve recommended to anyone visiting #SanDiego.

Kids and I hit this up once a week.

They’ll be crushed.

@paninid Love that the journalist just accepted the excuse that it’s the fault of minimum wage increase and not all that private equity debt.

Lemkin was a Jewish lawyer who coined the term "genocide" because of the lack of response to what the Ottomans did to Armenians, and who set the definition used in the Nuremberg trials after the WWII.

Imagine losing your most precious colonial territory because the subjects object to animal fat used in the cartridges of their army-issued rifle.

@paninid I recently listened to an episode of the superb Empire podcast that covered this moment, which led to the end of the EIC and start of the imperial Raj proper. Many of the iconic stories of this era turn out to be apocryphal but def seems like the belief they were going to be made to use pig grease was the flash point for the rebelling troops; it was linked to a current rumor or belief that the (increasingly evangelical) British were going to start forcible religious conversions.

All #JerrySeinfeld had to do was not say anything.

And he just could. not. resist.

You steal one guy’s idea to make a show about nothing and your inability to be a character actor and live long enough to project all your insecurities.

@angiebaby @paninid I’m also not really trying to get out of it, but I’m prepared for cringe.

In December, my sister wanted to go see Adam Carolla, so I went along with her as company. Now, that was a mistake! 😬 (and I should’ve known better)

@angiebaby @paninid A humorous anecdote about these tickets:

I bought them for my wife, who was binge-watching Seinfeld last Fall. I assumed she would be interested. The other day, she laughed and said, “I hated that show. They’re all terrible humans, and I get that’s the point, but I watched mainly to learn all the cultural references I keep missing.” 🤣

So, we’re just going to enjoy the night out regardless of how he turns out.

I find it difficult to believe that Alito and Thomas don’t have some Pelican Brief-like #kompromat.

The #AntiNormie usually don’t maintain operational security that well due to their warped moral sense of #virtue.

At this point I assume all Nazi supporters are either true believers and/or have pedophile blackmail material on them.

Someone needs to float an age of consent case in front of SCOTUS and see how high Alito and Thomas jump.

Understanding the history of Israel •does• require understanding it as a settler colonialist project. But analogizing to US history is extremely misleading. Solidarity between comparable regimes does NOT explain US support for Israel.

@Miniver
Zionism before the Holocaust was an unpopular fringe idea amongst the diaspora.

Mein Kampf contains praise for the 19th century policies carried out by the American government against its Black and indigenous people.

The United States was the inspiration for the Nazi’s fascist policy against The Others™.

doesn’t repeat, but it does rhyme.
