Artist, writer, and epic fantasy aficionado by night. Code monster by day.

Big-D Democrat, and small-d democrat.

Gen X, somewhere on the interminable crooked road between "cynical" and "bitter".

I'm a classical nerd. I learned Pascal on a Kaypro 4 CP/M box. I once housed a Data General mainframe in the family chicken shack, terminal and all ($60 at a university auction). I have worked on physical Unix terminals, not one of these new-fangled "terminal emulators".

But, I'm also an artist, writer, and musical hobbyist. When I was younger, I was a quester, seeking some higher truth, if it was possible to be found in what remained of the wilds of America. I lived in the woods for years. Years. In tents, or yurts, or under tarps, or under stars and the sigh and susurus of the wind in the trees.

I've got stories, man. Real stories. True stories.

Life can take many shapes, and it can change shape.

These days I program computers. I got a degree in Pure Math and found a niche. You haven't heard of the company I work for, but I help shape an industry that influences your life. You can try to guess if you want. I don't mind. I'll even tell you if you're right. It's a harmless industry, for the most part. Nothing nefarious.

Money doesn't buy happiness is something rich people say, because they can't figure out why people don't like them.

notroot,

@RickiTarr Can confirm.

I was once houseless in my youth. I have Spanged ("Spare change?") and picked cigarette butts out of public ashcans. Lived in a yurt for years... one time at a KOA in the winter.

Now I have a career as a software engineer, and yeah... I'm comfortable. Has it bought me happiness?

It's bought me peace of mind. I'm not sure I want to be happy. I think I'd rather be content.

Saw the aftermath of a friend's goat's encounter with a pair of mountain lions. It was NOT pretty. I guess I'm not going hiking around at night at their house, LOL.

notroot,

@ai6yr Yup! This can't be emphasized enough.

Colorado still has wilderness. A lot of it isn't old growth, but it is still wilderness.

If you live in a picturesque place, there's a chance of death.

Moose are more likely to kill you, but mountain lions will do the trick. Black bears are too small to pose much of a threat, but leave 'em all alone, please.

Well, the lions might not leave YOU alone.

Go jogging on a nice trail in the woods? Go mountain biking like you saw in the TV commercial?

Stupid mother fucker.

You're a snack. You'll trigger the predatory instinct to pursue a fleeing prey. You won't be able to react in time to puff yourself up and scream, throw things, and wave big sticks in the air that you need to be able to do to intimidate a mountain lion.

America is not yet tame.

notroot,

@ai6yr Oh yeah... and your demise at the 20 claws and mouthful of fangs of the mountain lion?

Gruesome. The OP hinted at it, but let me give you the full picture... just for color. Take it as a warning.

Mountain lions are cats, so they will chase you down and launch themselves at your back. On your mountain bike, jogging along, whatever. They want lunch, and you're an opportunity.

When they do that, you're pretty much done. Very few people survive a mountain lion attack. They aren't bears just defending their berry patch. If you don't kill them first, then you're pretty much lunch.

They like to take the back of your neck in their maw, and paralyze you with a nice solid CHOMP. They may or may not eviscerate you (ie, spilling your guts out) with their claws at the SAME FUCKING TIME.

Then, like most cats, they'll snack on you a bit, and get bored. Once they get bored, they'll drag you someplace and try to hide you. Imagine your kitty scratching around their food dish.

That's what they do to your partially-eaten corpse.

Most people who are actually FOUND after a mountain lion attack are found in this condition. Partially eaten and stashed somewhere the lion can privately revisit to snack some more until you're too stinky to eat.

Just saying. Walk in the wilderness.

Don't run. Don't bike.

Periodic reminder that the Fediverse currently only has one algorithm: FIFO + boosts.

So boost liberally, and boost often.

Don't be afraid to make things viral and annoying.

Most of us aren't looking at our feeds that often, so we need those boosts to know what's happening.

Glad I switched, fully, to #Linux a few months ago. I'm not a programmer or techie, and struggled with Linux in the past, but compared to a decade ago, the installation was really easy & it the user interface has improved dramatically.

For reference, using #LinuxMint

#microsoft #recall #spyware #privacy #AI

notroot,

@ncoca I've been using Linux for more than a decade and yes... it has improved enormously even in that time.

My personal recommendation for new Linux users is to try Pop!_OS, based on Ubuntu. It's made by the hardware company System76, and it's one of the only distros that can update your firmware for you (depending on your hardware).

This is an oft-overlooked but significant issue for Linux users, as otherwise updating firmware may require booting Windows! With most Linux distros, you won't even know there's a firmware update.

If you think security updates to software are important... heheh... Firmware updates are usually security updates.

notroot,

@ncoca It's pretty slick. It uses a GNOME-like desktop environment, written in Rust, starting with 22.04.

My favorite feature is it's tiling window manager with stacks. No more arranging windows. Kind of a game-changer for keyboard-centric users like me. (I have RSI from mousing.)

What is your dream road trip? Where would you start? Where would you end up? What stops would you make along the way? It can be short or long, whatever interests you!

notroot,

@RickiTarr Probably US 1 from Maine to Key West.

Sidenote: I used to live a block away from US 1 in Miami. We called it "Useless 1" because it's almost always the worst route to get anywhere in Miami... unless where you're going is ON Useless 1. Even then it's usually easier to take a straight north-south or east-west road to intersect at Useless 1 near your Useless 1 destination.

Adding a Fediverse Share Button to my Emacs Nikola Blog

Just to get extra meta, I published this blog post, then shared it to my #Fediverse account by clicking the "Fediverse Share Button" and writing these words you're reading right now.

Next I will grab the article ID of this toot, and rebuild and redeploy, so that when (if?) anyone replies to this toot, their replies will appear in the "Comments" section of my blog!

100% static site, written in Emacs, built and deployed using Nikola.

https://blog.notroot.online/posts/adding-a-fediverse-share-button-to-my-emacs-nikola-blog/

notroot,

@stefan I used your Fediverse Share Button to post this! And now this reply will appear in the comments of the blog post.

The Fediverse is so cooool

notroot,

@stefan Thanks for making it, Stefan! That was a fun couple of hours getting it all to work just the way I wanted.

It works really slick, BTW. And it LOOKS GOOD too. Always a plus.

notroot,

@stefan Like it? Nahhh... I love it!

I haven't clicked a "share" button in years because this is the only social media I have. No Twit, no Facebot. I saw one other attempt at a fediverse button, but I couldn't get it to work at the time.

Yours was stupidly simple to implement.

It was only a little more complicated because I'm using Nikola, so I had to figure out where to put the pieces. Once I had it all in place... it JUST WORKED. First time.

notroot,

@stefan That'd be amazeballs. Currently I would have to git pull and copy over and rebuild to get upstream changes.

I should probably move my CSS changes into my own stylesheet, and just override yours, too, so that I don't have to re-apply them later.

Honestly tho? I'm just happy it works. My blog isn't exactly ... quotable ... heheh. But the button is just too awesome. I NEEDED IT. Now I can annoy people with "New blog post dropped!" with button clicks instead of copy-pastes!

notroot,

@stefan Neat! You're probably the first person besides me who has linked to one of my blog posts! 🤣

I'm prototyping a fediverse sharing button. Anyone interested in giving it a try?

Feature highlights:

  • shows a logo of supported fediverse software
  • lets you share selected text
  • remembers the last fediverse domain used

Demo: https://fediverse-share-button.stefanbohacek.dev/

notroot,

@stefan Cool! I just tried it and it works with , too. Probably because Sharkey uses Mastodon's front-end API instead of Misskey's.

So you can add support for Sharkey to the list of supported software!

To use with , use --socks5-hostname or the socks5h:// scheme for the hostname set with -x / --proxy.

curl has worked fine for Tor transfers for decades.

Those options make curl tell the proxy to do the name resolving instead of doing it itself.

KKK demonstrations are protected by the police. Yet, police are called if students and Jewish groups speak out about genocide in Palestine and they are proclaimed antisemites. AT WHAT POINT does all this fuckery BIND US ALL TOGETHER IN THE FIGHT?

notroot,

@StillIRise1963 It's not genocide, and as long as fake-ass "leftists" keep insisting on perpetuating that lie, they will be opposed by decent people everywhere.

The naive children can protest all they want, but comparing opponents of Hamas to the KKK is "fuck you" level gaslighting.

So fuck you.

notroot,

@StillIRise1963 I'm not the idiot spreading Hamas propaganda.

The "genocide" lie is just that. A lie. I won't stop calling out liars spreading the lie.
